This invention relates to paper deflectors for guiding paper around the platens of typewritii'ig machines.
The main object of the invention isto provide simplified, improved and inexpensive means for accommodating and guiding accurately thick sheaves of sheets easily and elticiently as well'as single sheets. For this purpose, the platen is provided with a paper deflector supported by rocking arms. The rear edge of the deflector under-laps the lower edge of the paper shelf and its forward edge extends past the usual forward feed rolls. The deflector is held against the under face of the platen by springs, and is withdrawn from the platen simultaneously with the pressure rolls. The arms guide the deflector about vertically toward and from the platen.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view showing the under side of a platen frame of the Underwood writing machine, equipped with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view showing the manner of supporting the paper deflector. Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing the mechanism in normal position, parts being omitted to better disclose the invention. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the rolls and deflector cast off. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary detail front view, showing the tension device for pressing the rolls against the platen.
The cylindrical platen 1 has an axle 2 by which it is journaled in the ends 3, 4:, of a platen frame. Said ends are connected by a fixed or rigid rear paper shelf 5 inclining dowlnvardly and forwardly to the under part of the platen. Also rigidly connecting said ends is a tie rod 6, and hinged upon said rod is a pair of forwardly extending arms 7, carrying an axle 8, extending horizontally along the under side of the platen.
'On this axle is mounted a series of forward sure-rolls 12. Springs 12 hold the forward mg an axle 11 upon which are rear pres-- and rcarpressurc rolls against the platen. The rollecarrying devices are duplicated at the ends of the platen. By depressing a key 13, the pressure rolls are cast otl' or re leased from the platen, said key being connected by a link 14; to a crank 15 on a cam shaft 16 engaging lugs 17 connected with the arms '7, 10, supporting the pressure rolls. Along the bottom edge of the paper shelf 5 are formed paper guiding tongues 18 projecting forwardly and downwardly through openings 19 formed in a yielding paper dcdoctor or apron 20 lying beneath and cont'ormii-ig generally to the curvature of the platen 1, and having along its rear edge a strengthening head 90. W hen the release key 125 is depressed, the cam shaft 1.6 is rocked to swing the roll supporting arms 7, 10, in the usual manner, to release the rolls. The throw of the front axle 8 away from the platen brings the axle against the books 29, to carry the deflector away from the platen; the arms 23 rocking downwardly on the rod (3 until arrested by theengagement of their stops 30 with the cam shaft (3, which also arrests the deflector.
