Description

March 18 5-1924. 1,487,643
P. WOLFE HAIR CURLER Fil d April 23, 1923 INVENTOR.
Patented Mar. 18, 1924.
PATENT caries- PAULINE worse, or DAVENPORT, IOWA.
HAIR GUBLER.
Application filed April 23, 1928. Serial No. 634,118.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that PAULINE TVVOLFE, acitizen of the United States, residing at 117 East 6th Street, Davenport, in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair Curlers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hair curlers.
The object of my invention is to provide a hair curler with means secured thereto for holding the outer ends of the hair while the hair is being wound upon the curler and which will not interfere with the means for holding the hair in the curler.
I attain this object by the mechanism illus trated in the accompanying drawings, in
which,
Figure 1 is a top or plan view of the curler when open; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the curler in closed position and Figure 3 is a side elevation of the curler when partly opened.
My device preferably consists of two arms, 1 and 3, hinged together at one end. My hinge is preferably formed by punching a hole, 5, in the straight end of the arm, 3, and by inserting a loop formed at the end of the arm, 1, through said hole. It is obvious that the arms may be hinged or fastened together in other convenient ways without departing from the spirit of my invention. The unhinged end of the arm, 3, is preferably bent up and back to form a hook, 6, in which hook the free end of the arm, 1, may be secured.
In my preferred form, the arm, 3, has a tongue, 2, formed integral therewith or united thereto by soldering, spot welding, or any other suitable means. I prefer to have the tongue integral with the arm, 3, but it is obvious that other forms may be used, and I do not limit my claims to the form shown in the illustrations accompanying this description. The tongue may be of resilient metal or of featherbone, leather, fibre or canvas covered wire, or of any material suitable for retaining the ends of the hair. It is obvious that the tongue, 2, may be formed integral with or attached to either of said arms.
While my invention is intended primarily for short or so-ca-lled bobbed hair, it
obviously may be used with long hair when desired. w
In the operation of my device, the curler is opened out fiat, as in Figure 1. Then the ends of the hair are inserted between the tongue, 2, and the arm, 3, and the curler is turned around and around, thus winding the hair around the arm, 3. When the hair has been wound around the arm, 8, as much as desired, the arm, 1, is folded over and its free end is slid transversely under the hook, 6, until it engages therewith. To remove the curler, and undo the hair, the above operation is reversed.
I claim:
1. A hair curler comprising two arms hinged together at one end, the other end of one of said arms being turned inwardly and backwardly to form a hook under which the free end of the other arm may be inserted, and a tongue'formed upon one of said arms near the middle thereof.
2. A hair curler comprising two arms hinged together at one end, the other end of one of said arms being turned inwardly and backwardly to form a book under which the free end of the other arm may be inserted, and a tongue united to one of said arms near the middle thereof.
3. A hair curler comprising two arms hinged together at one end, the other end of one of said arms being turned inwardly and backwardly toform a hook under which the free end of the other arm may be inserted, and a resilient tongue united to one of said arms near the middle thereof.
4. A hair curler comprising two arms hinged together at one end, the other end of one of said arms being turned inwardly and backwardly to form a hook under which the free end of the other arm may be inserted, and a tongue formed upon the hooked arm intermediate the hinge and hook.
5. A hair curler comprising two, arms hinged together at one end, the other end of one of said arms being turned inwardly and baokwardly to form a hook under which the free end of the other arm may be insorted and a resilient tongue united to the ooed arm intermediate the hinge and the 6. A hair curler comprising two spring arms hinged together at one end, the other end of one of said arms being turned inwardly and backwardly to form a hookunder which the free end of the other arm may beinserted, and a tongue formed upon one of said arms near the middle thereof.
7. A hair curler comprising two spring arms hinged together at one end, the other end of one of said arms being turned inwardly and ba-ckwardly to form a hook under which the free end of the other arm may be inserted, and a tongue united to one of said arms near the middle thereof.
8. A hair curler comprising two spring arms hinged together at one end, the other end of one of said arms being turned inwardly and backwardly to form a hook under which the free end of the other arm may be inserted, and a. resilient tongue united to one of said arms near the middle thereof.
In testimony whereof she afiixes her signature.
