,lltUtZ? UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES SILVERMAN, 0F PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
HAIR-RETAINING DEVICE.
Application filed May 26,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES SILVERMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair-Itetaining Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to hair retaining devices for crimping or curling the hair which is wound around one of the arms and clamped therein thus wound.
Heretofore in structures of this character the strands of the hair which have been wound around and clamped between the retaining arms have been broken or cut by the edges of the arms. Furthermore the two stiff arms have not afforded room for the operators hand when attempting to wind the hair upon one of the two arms.
The essential objects of my invention are to overcome the above enumerated disadvantages, and to secure these results in a simple and inexpensive structure.
To the above ends essentially m invention consists in such parts and in sucli combinations of parts as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification,
Figures 1 and 2 are a front elevation and plan view respectively of my novel device in closed position,
Fig. 3, a plan view of the same partially open,
Fig. 4:, a front elevation of the same fully open, and
Figs. 5 and 6, enlarged sections on line 5-5 and 6-6 respectively of Fig. 1.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the views.
In constructing my device a thin flat strip of resilient metal is provided. This strip is so formed as to constitute a flat arm 8 with an end portion folded upon itself to constitute an'end loop 9 terminating in a. fiat finger 10. The arm 8 is outwardly curved, and upon its end opposite the loop the material of the arm is inwardly bent or folded to form a hook 12 whose beak 13 is preferably longitudinally convexo-concave. An arm 15 has a fiat attaching end portion 16 and a longitudinally convexo-concave body portion 17. This arm is also resilient and outwardly curved. The arm portion 16 is piv- Specification of Letters Patent.

otally connected with the finger 10, whose flat faces engage each other, in any convenient manner. In the present instance the parts 16 and 10 have holes 19 and 20 respectively through which loosely passes a hollow body 21 of a rivet whose flanges 22 overlap said parts.
When it is desired to wrap the hair around the receiving or charging arm 15 the latter is laterally swung into some such relative position as shown in Fig. 4:, so that in wrapping the arm the operators fingers are not impeded by any proximity of the arm 8. After the hair has been wrapped the arm 15 is returned toward the arm 8. In this position, as shown in Fig. 3, thearms diverge toward their free ends. The device is fastened by compressing the armends and swinging the arms horizontally toward each other until the outer end of the arm 15 overlaps the beak 13 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
It will be observed that the inclination or curvature of the lateral edges of the arm 15 away from the plane of the arm 8 prevents any pinching or cutting of the hair wound around the arm 15.
I claim 1. A hair retaining device comprising a resilient arm, an opposing extension upon one end of the arm, a resilient arm rotatable transversely of the first arm pivotally attached at one end to'the extension, said arms being normally divergent at their free ends, and a hook upon the free end of one arm adapted to engage the end of the other arm.
2. A hair retaining device comprising a strip of resilient material folded upon itself forming an arm and an opposing extension, a longitudinally convexo concave arm overlapping at one end of the extension, a rivet loosely binding the last mentioned arm to the extension, and means upon the end of one arm for engaging the end of the other arm.
3. A hair retaining device comprising a relatively broad strip of resilient material folded upon itself forming an arm and an opposing flat extension, a relatively broad resilient longitudinally convexo concave arm pivotally mounted at one end to the extension, and a means upon the end of the first arm for engaging the end of the second arm.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature.
CHARLES SILVERMAN.
