Description

Patented Jan. 27, 1925.
UNITED STATES OSCAR L. SMITH, OF RYLDAL, PENNSYLVANIA. ASSIGNOR TO PENN RIVET CORPORA- PATENT OFFICE.
TION, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF VIRGINIA.
HAIR. CURLER.
Application filed. April 15, 1924.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR L. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rydal, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvementin Hair Curlers, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings re presenting like parts.
This invention relates to improvements in hair curlers for curling or waving hair, and more particularly has reference to hair curlers of the type comp-rising two arms pivotally connected at one end and having a locking device for holding the free ends of the two arms in closed position when the hair has been wound upon one of the arms.
It has been proposed heretofore to make hair curlers from a single piece of metal one arm of which is flexible and springs away from the other arm to a limited degree, but in such proposed construction the flexible arm is more or less in the way while the hair is being wound around the other arm. By pivotally connecting the arms as in the present device one arm may be swung to such an angle to the other that it will be entirely out of the way while hair is being wound upon the other arm.
In hair curlers of the type of the present invention the arm. upon which the hair is wound should have a rounded contour that is free from edges that might injure or break the hair wound thereon.
Having the above matters in mind, the present invention relates to a hair curler consisting of a hair receiving rod of rounded contour in cross-section and having an end portion bent to form a pivot that extends though a flat arm of spring metal and pivotally secures the flat arm to the hair receiving rod.
Thevarious features of the invention will best be made clear from the following description and accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the hair curler of the present invention with the pivoted arms disposed at an angle to each other.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the pifiOtBd arms of Fig. 1 swung toward each ot er.
Serial No. 706,672.
Fig. 3 on an enlarged scale shows the The arms are pivotally connected so that one may be swung to diiferent angular positions relative to the other. The pivotal connection between the two arms preferably is in the form of a stiff joint so that the arms will remain at any angular position to which they are adjusted, and the pivotal connection is formed by bending an end portion. of the rod 1 at right angles to the axis of the rod to form a pivot pin 3 that extends through a hole formed in the flat arm 2 I near one end. The pivot pin 3 is secured in the hole of the flat arm by providing shoulders 1- and 5 upon the pin that engages the opposite faces of the flat arm. The end portion of the rod 1 provided with the pivot pin is bent to form a bulging loop 6. This loo-p makes it possible to position the pivot pin 3 in substantial alignment with the axis of the rod 1 so that the flat flexible arm will lie close to the rod 1, and it also avoids bending the rod 1 at a. sharp angle in forming the pivot pin 3. The loop 6 is further desirable in that it forms a clearance space between the arms 1 and 2 adjacent the pivot so that danger of the hair being caught between the two arms at the pivot is avoided, and by forming the pivot pin as an integral part of the rod 1 a simple and satisfactory construction is provided.
The flat flexible arm 2 is provided with a locking end 7 which is preferably formed by a folded over portion at the. free end of the arm. The locking means 7 has a notch 8 in the end portion 9 adapted to receive the end of the bar 1 and lock the bar to the flexible arm with the hair to be curled confined between the arms as shown.
What is claimed is 1. A hair curler formed of a solid stifl' hair receiving rod. of rounded contour cross-section and presenting no edges liable to break or injure the hair Wound thereon, and a separate fiat arm of spring nietal pi-votally secure-(l te vsaid rod by a tight joint formed bybending a. portion of the rod at right angles to its axis to form a pivot pin that extends through a h0le1in the flat flexible arm and is secured therein by shoulders on the pivot pin at the opposite faces of the flatarm, and a lock for connecting' the f-r'ee endsof the flexible arm and stiff rod;
*2. A hair curler formed ofa solid sti-fi. hair-receiving rod of rounded contour in cross-section andp-resenting 11o edges liable to break or --iiijurethe hair Wound thereon,
and a separate flatarm of spring metal pivotally secured to therod by anintegral part of the rod consisting of an end portion of the rod bent to form "a bulging ,loop
from-which a portion of the rod extends at OSCAR L. SMITH.
