BUGKLE.
.application sie@ Febr-ilary as, serial no. 520,775.,
yTo all whom t may concern:
Be it known'that l, Francis il. Sorrwnun, a citizen oit United .tates, residing at New ork city, in the county et New York and State ot New York, have invented new and useful improvements in Buckles, of. which the vfollowing is a specilication.
his invention relates to buckles and more particularly `to a belt buckle.l
The principal object of the invention is the provision ci a buckle which is capable ot preventing a belt from slipping when it is applied to the wearer.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision ot a buckle adapted to be formed from a single piece of material whereby the cost of manufacture is reduced to a minimum.
A further object of the invention residesparts, the essential features of which are hereinafter fully described, are particularly pointed out in the appended claims, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved buckle showing the belt attached.
Figure 2 is a horizontal' section view therethrough.
Figure 3 is vertical sectional. view on the line 3 3 ofFigure 1. y
Figure 4t is a plan view of the blank from which the buckle is formed.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the invention consists of a iframe 5, the same being formed from a single blank of rectangular material. By reference to Figure l the blank is bent to form a front wall 6, top wall 7, bottomk wall 3, and portions 9 and 10 serving to torni a rear wall 11. The top wall 7, and the bottom wall 8 are identical in construction and each is provided with a slot 12 and an opening 13, the said slots 12 and openings 13 being in. vertical alignment when the blank is Jolded as is shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3 oit the drawing. rlhe portion 10 of the frame of the rear wall is slit to provide a tongue Madapted to be bent so as to form an engaging means 15, and in the present instance the same comprises a yieldable catch 16. The frame is provided with aguidewayl'?, between the front wall 6 and rear wall 11 into which the engaging means 15 entends. f A retracting means 18is employed iior action with the engaging means r15. Tfn the present instance the means 18 con'iprises` a pin or rod 19 having manipulating portions formed onits ends and capable ot movement in the slots 12 of the frame. From the construction it will be apparent that by moving the pin 19 toward the rear oi the frame,
the yieldable catch will be retracted, thereby permitting the free passage of a belt 2G.
The belt 20 is suitably connected to the :trame 5 by means of a bail 21 which in turn is provided withtrunnions 22 having bearings in the openings 13 of the top and bottom walls. rlhe free end of the belt is shown at 23 and is provided with a plurality of notches or recesses 24 which when the free end of the beltis inserted in the guideway 17 the notches or recesses 211 will co-act ywith the yieldable catch 16.
In operation, the free end 23 oi the belt is inserted inthe guideway 17 to the desired adjustment and is held therein by means ot` the yieldable catch16 engaging the notches or recesses 24,. By reason of the catch 16 constantly pressing the belt against the front wall 6, a binding action is set up between the catch 16 and the front wall 6 making it practically impossible for the belt to slip from its adjust-ed position. When it is desired to adjust the belt or remove the free end from the buckle, the catch 16 is retracted by means of a pin 19 in the manner already described.
Having described what l consider to be the preferred form of my invention, l wish it to be understood that changes, alterations and modifications as come within the claims may be resorted to when desired.
What is claimed as new is:
1. A buckle including a frame having a portion struck-up therefrom for yielding engagement with the free end of a belt and a part of the frame correlated to the struckup portion to co-act therewith, and means for retracting said upstruck portion.
2. A buckle including a frame having va front wall and' a rear wall, and means stamped from said rear wall and adapted to co-act with the free end of a belt for securely holding the same in clamping engagernent with the front wall.
3. A buckle including a frame having a soVA front Wall and a rear Wall integral therewith, a guideway between,V a beit connected at one end of said frame, and adapted to have its free end insertedin said guideway, and yieldable engaging vmeans strueknp from the rear Wall of said frame and extendingV into said guideway for co-aetion with the free end of said belt.
' 4. A buckle including a frame having a front and rear Wall integral therewith al guidewey between, a belt connected at one FRANCIS J. SCHWERD.
