latll PATENT ortica.
BARTHOLD DE MATTIA, OF CLIFTON, NEW JERSEY.
PEDAL PAD.
Application led August 3, 1921. Serial No. 489,491.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, BARTHOLD DE MATTIA, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Clifton, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful mprovements in Pedal Pads, o-f which the following is a full, clear,
. and exact description.
The present invention relates to pedal pads and more particularly to a pedal pad for use in connection with automobile pedals.
The object of the invention is to pro-vide a` cushion pad which may be readily applied to the face of the pedal to produce a yielding contact for the foot and at the same time prevent the foot from slipping from the face of the pedal.
rlhe invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings Ias applied to "the pedal of a Ford automobile although, of course, it is applicable to any pedal.
ln, the drawings Figure l shows the upper portion of a pedal with the pad connected thereto.
Figure 2 sho-ws a side elevation of the parts shown in Figure l.
Figure 3 shows a rear view, and
Figure 4: shows a vertical sectional view taken on a central longtudinal line in Figure 1.
Similar reference characters will be employed to designate corresponding parts.
The pedal 1 is of the usual form and is provided with a curved contact plate Qwhich as shown in Figures 1 and 3 is substantially oval or elliptical in outline. The contact surface of such pedal is usually roughened to produce a frictional contact between such surface and the sole of the shoe, but the roughened surface rapidly becomes worn and smooth in use so that there is constant liability of the foot slipping therefrom, and it is customary to provide some sort of a pad to insure proper contact between the foot and pedal.
The pad 3 is formed of rubber or other suitable elastic or cushioning material. The central portion of the pad vis preferably circularl in form and formed with concentric ridges and grooves 4 and 5 respectively. Upon opposite diametrical points the base of the pad will be extended, forming flanges 6 and 7 the flanges 6 being provided with a groove or recess 8 andan outer rib 9 and therflange 7 is provided with a groove or recess l() and a rib 1l. The pad 3 is held to the pedal 2 by means of a metallic strap 12 which is loopedV about the .pedal and the flange 6 as shown at 13, being seated in the recess 8. At the back the strap members cross each other as shown at 14- and the free ends 15 pass through slots 16 in projecting ears of a clamping pla-te 17, whereby the ends may be 'turned down as shown at 18 to hold the pad to the face of the pedal. Preferably the clamping plate 17 will be provided with a groove 19 adapted to fit overv and receive the rib 11. Then the parts are assembled, Vas shown, the looped strap firmly holds the upper end to the pedal while the clamping plate firmly holds the lower end. Having described my invention, l claim- 1. In combination, a pedal pad, a looped strap engaging one end of the pad and the pedal, a clamping plate engaging the oppositeend of the pad, and means to connect the free ends of the looped strap -to 'the clamping plate.
2. In combination, a. pedal pad provided with extended flanges, a looped strap and a clamping plate engaging the extensions of the pedal pad for securing said pad to the pedal, said strap crossed at the baclr of the pedal and having its free ends` connected to the clamping plate.
3. In combination, a pedal ad provided with diametrically disposed er; ndedlla and an intermediate raised friction surface, and a strap engaging the pedal and the flanges of the pad, to hold the pad in position on the pedal.' f
