TANK CONSTRUCTION.

Application filed December 22, 1919. Serial No. 346,711.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ANDREW A. KRAMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tank Construction; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of thisspecification.

This invention relates to tank wagons and particularly to the tank construction.

One of the objects of the invention is to provide means wihereby a rcceptacle for cans or other articles may be conveniently attached to the tank, the invention contemplating the provision of means whereby the end sheet and bolster may serve as a supporting means for the receptacle.

It is also the purpose of my invention to provide a construction wherein the operating parts of the valves for the discharge pipes may be contained within the receptacle so that when the receptacle is locked, the valves cannot be operated. This is a material advantage since it eliminates the necessity for safe-guarding) each individual pipe against tampering y unauthorized persons.

Fig. II is a vertical, longitudinal, sectional view through a portion of the tank, showing the construction of the receptacle and the relation thereto of the valve operatin elements, and

Fig. III is a detail view of a slightly modified form of slotted plate.

The tank 1 will generally be constructed tubular in form and will substantially constitute a box girder. It is contemplated that the tank be formed with compartments in the usual way and each compartment is provided with a pipe. In the present instance, it is assumed that there are three compartments and the discharge pipes 2, 3, and 4 lead therefrom and have individual communication therewith. The end sheet 5 for the tank body 1 projects slightly beyond the body portion of the tank, as indicated at 6, the upper portion serving as a support for the receptacle and the lower port on of the flange constituting a bolster 7 with a laterally turned flange 8 adapted to rest upon the frame 9 of the vehicle. The receptace 10 consists of an inverted U- shaped sheet 11 which may! be fastened to the flange 6 in any well known manner, and to the sheet 11 is secured an end sheet 12 provided with doors 13 and 14, hinged to the end sheet 12 by hinges 15 and 16, the doors 13 and 14 being adapted to be locked together by a hasp 17 and a hasp lock 18 although the particular locking means is not an essential part of the invention.

The floor-19 of the receptacle consists of a sheet having a flange 20 fastened to the end sheet 5 and a flange 21 fastened to the sheet 12, as clearly indicated in Fig. II, and said floor sheet 19 is provided withv a plurality of openings or slots 22, 23 and 24 through which the operating handles or elements 25, 26 and 27 for the valves 28 in the pipes 2, 3 and 4 project.

The valve operating elements 25, 26 and 27 are only accessible when the doors 13 and 14 are open; therefore, liability of oil being discharged from the tank by unauthorized persons will be prevented because the valves cannot be operated unless access is had tothe receptacle l0 and this can only be accom plished when the doors are open.

If desired, a shelf 29 may be provided in the receptacle, as indicated in Fig. II, although this shelf may be dispensed with.

By reference to the drawings it will be observed that the end sheet 5 constitutes a closer for the end of the tank and that it also serves as a bolster as well as a receptacle support, also that the receptacle is so arranged that it constitutes a housing for the valve operating elements in the pipes leading from the several receptacles.

In Fig. III I have shown the plate 19' with the flange 21 omitted and the slots running to the edge of the plate, the preferred construction, however, being illustrated in Fig. II.

What I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:

1. In combination with a tank wagon com.- prising a sheet metal body and an end sheet, a shell having one edge attached to the end sheet and forming the top and sides of a receptacle, said end sheet forming the. outer wall of the tank body and the inner g medias wall of the receptacle, a floor .sheet for the receptacle attached to and carried by said prising a sheet metal body and an end sheet,

a shel having one edge attached to the end sheet and forming the to and sides of a. receptacle, said end sheet orming the outer wall of the tank bod and the inner wall of the receptacle, a cor sheet for the receptacle having openings therein, a pipe leading from the tank body, and a valve on said p1pe having a handle extended through said floor opening to the interior of said receptacle.

3.
