Application led January 27, 1921.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN J. MCDERMOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements iny Envelopes, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention pertains to envelopes, and it contemplates the provision in an envelope of means whereby when the same has been sealed, it may be readil and easily opened, and this without liability of tearing or otherwise injuring the contents of said envelope.
The invention further contemplates the provision of means whereby the string that I employ to open the envelope will be at all times ready for use.
The invention in all of its details will be fully understood from the following description and claim, when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this specication, inwhioh:
Figure l is a side elevation of my novel envelope and showing the attachment of the opening means I employ to open the said envelope.
Figure 2 is a view illustrating a portion of envelope and the opening cord as the same appears before being secured in its proper position,
Figure 3 is a sectional view illustrating how the cord appears when embedded in the envelope.
Figure 4 isa detail view showing the cord as placed in its proper position but with the sealing ap open.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings-- My invention comprises the envelope body l that is provided with the longitudinal meeting edges that are sealed or otherwise secured together as illustrated, and at one end the said envelope is provided with the flap 2, that is gummed so as to permit of ready sealing of the flap'to the envelope body.

integral withl the body 1, and as clearly shown in Figure 4, I secure a cord or other cutting member 4, under one of the tabs 3, and extend the samealong the end of the envelope and then pass the said cord under the other of the tabs or retainers 3.
At its extremeend opposite the flapped end 2, I provide a flap 5, that is integral with the body l, and is also gummed or otherwise provided with adhesive as illustrated.
Near its upper end the liap 5 is provided with an aperture 6, and the said aperture will permit of the ready handling of the string 4 when the flap 5 has been pasted or otherwise stuck to the body 1.
.In the practical use of the device, the cord 4 is placed under the tabs 3, and the end 2 is sealed to the body l, and then a letter or other communication is placed in the envelope in the Ordinary well known manner. The Hap 5 is then sealed to the body l and by this sealing process the cord will be securely held in the end of the envelope. When a person desires to open the envelope, he simply takes hold of the cord through the opening 6 of the flap 5, and pulls the cord downwardly along the edge of the envelope, from the upper tab 3, to the lower tab 3.
It will be apparent from the foregoing thatthe envelope constructed along the toregoing lines differs very slightly from the 0rdinary well-known envelope, and is as easily used as envelopes now on the market. Moreover, the liability of tearing the contents of said envelope is absolutely overcome, and the envelope as a whole presents the same appearance of the commercial envelope being used at present.
I would distinctly have it understood that the flap 5 and the liap 2 may be placed along the lower and upper edges of the envelope as well as along the ends of the envelope as illustrated by the drawings.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s:
