W. F. SUMER POCKET COMB, BRUSH, AND MIRROR Filed July 12, 1922 WALTER IE. SUMEE, OF MILES CITY, lvIONTANA.
POCKET 08MB, BRUSH, .ch'ND 3311112303.
Application filed July 12,
1 o (171 whom it may concern Be it known that l. Vihsnrnn l Snnnn,
a citizen of the Unitet States, residiin; at *liles City, in the county of Custer and i tate of liiontana, have invented certain er? and useful Improvements in Pocket ombs. Brushes, and h lirrors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a combination toilet article used for dressing the hair, and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this character. which contains a comb and brush, as well as amirror. made of a size to be conveniently carried in a pocket. The device is constructed in such a. manner that when not in use it can be folded so that the comb and brush may be made to retire within the frame, the mirror forming the protecting cover for the brush.
in the accompanying drawing illustrating one embodiment of the invention- Figure 1. shows a perspective view of the device when folded;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof also in folded position, and
3 is aside elevation in partial. section. of the device open and ready for use.
The device consists of a frame 10 having; a handle ii at one end. The frame is provided with a ledge 1 running around its opening at one side thereof.
In the frame the brush 13 i s loosely and around the edge of the brush is provided a flange 14 adapted to engage with the let 12 when the device is in open position, as seen in Fig. 3, and the bristles 15 protrude through the opening of the frame. .ln order to hold the brush in the open. position, the comb 16. which is pivoted in the frame on journals 1? in the longitudinal direction thereof, is furnished with a fin 18 whiel is intended to engage with the flat back 19 of the brush as seen in Fig. 3. The brush has an abutment 520 for the fin which limits the swinging, motion of the comb. ln alinement with this fin and on the opposite side of the comb the latter is provided with teeth 31 and it will be seen in Fig. 8 that when the bristles 15 of the brush protrude at one side of the frame. the teeth 31 of the comb protrude through the opposite sideof the frame and the comb and. brush are in this manner locked rigidly together and the device is ready for use.
1922. Serial No. 574,450.
To put the device into folded position. the teeth 31 of the comb are pushed. to one side, so that the fin l8 disengages the abut-- ment 20 of the brush when the latter will fall back from the ledge 12 until the bristles 15 are about level with the outer face of the frame 10. while the comb lies flat on the other side thereof, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2.
It will now be understood that he brush is only loosely held in the frame and would rattle therein unless held down by some suitable device. Sucha device is provided in the shape of a lid or cover 21 of substantially the same contour as the frame 10 and is also provided with a handle 22 forming a counterpart of the handle 11 on the frame. On the inner side of the cover 21 is fitted a mirror 23 and when the parts are assembled the mirror 23 lies against the bristles 15 of the brush, as seen in Fig. 2. In order to hold the parts together in this position a tongue 24; is provided near the handle 11 on the frame 10 and a corresponding; notch 25 is furnished on the cover 21. ll ith these parts interengaging as seen in l the cover fits very compactly on the frame and the handle, and snap latch 26 or any other suitable. lockino' means is provid ed for securing the outer end of the cover to the frame 10. An opening 27 is provided in the handle for the purpose of hanging the mirror on a nail in the wall if so desired. be heldv in one hand while the brush and comb may be operated by the other hand.
some of the advantages of my combined brush. comb and mirror may here be enumerated.
On account of its ability to be folded 0r closed up compactly, this implement takes up very little room and may accordingly be conveniently carried in the pocket or in a hand bag.
l l ith the cover secured in position, there is no danger." of breakingeither the mirror or any other parts of the implement. nor can the bristles soil or catch in the clothing.
Beingsmall and easy to carry, it will be found of great convenience by travellers. sheep and cattle men, camping and fishing parties. army and navy men and others.
This invention will prevent the spreading of disease through many ersons using" the brush and comb provided in. hotels,
Otherwise the mirror may trains, steamers or other public places, because each individual may conveniently carry his own comb, brush and miror.
Having thus described the i11V611l3i0I1,Wl12lt is claimed as new is:
1. A device of the class described, com prising a frame having ledge, a brush loosely mounted in the frame and having a flange, and means in said frame adapted to push said brush outwardly until said flange engages with said ledge to firmly hold the brush with it s bristles protruding through said frame.
2. device of the class described, comprising a. frame having a ledge, a brush loosely mounted in the frame and having a flange, and means in said frame adapted to push said brush outwardly until said flange engages with said "ledge to firmly h'old'the brush with its'bristles protruding through said'fra1ne, said means including a member mounted to oscillate in the frame.
A device of the class described, comprising a frame having a ledge, a brush loosely mounted in the frame and having a flangef'and means in said frame adapted to push said brush outwardly until said flange engages with. said ledge to firn'ily hold the brush with its bristles protruding through said frame. said means including a member mounted to oscillate in the frame, said member having an elenient adapted to cooperate with the brush for moving the same.
4 A deviee of the class described, comprising a frame having a ledge a brush loosely mounted in theframe and having a flange, and means in said frame adapted to push said brush outwardly until said flan e engages with, said ledge 'to firmly hold tie brush with its bristles protruding through said frame. said means including a member mounted to oscillate in the frame. said member having an elementadapted to cooperate with the brush for moving the same, and said prising a frame having a ledge, a brush. E
IUGHTIlQQ/l: being provided with teeth forming a comb point-ing'in anopposite direction to said element.
5.'A device ofthe class described. commass-1y mounted in the frame and having a Lesa-see flange, means in said frame adapted to push said brush outwardly until said flange engages with said ledge to firmly hold the brush with its bristles protruding through said frame, and a lid having substantially the same contour as the frame, and means for locking the lid to said frame.
6. A device of the class described, comprising a frame having a ledge, a brush loosely mounted in the frame and having a flange, means in said frame adapted to push said brush outwardly until said. flange engages with said ledge to firmly hold the brush with its bristles protruding through said frame, and a lid having sul'istantially the same contour as the frame, andmeans for locking the lid to said frame, said lid having a reflecting surface on one sidithereof to contact with the bristles of the brush when the implement is in folded position.
7. A device of the class described, co1nprising a frame having a retaining member, a brush loosely mounted within said frame and means in said frame adapted to push said. brush outwardly against the retaining member, thereby holding the brush with its bristles protruding through said frame.
8. device of the class'described com prising a fran'ie having a retaining member, a brush loosely mounted within one side of said frame and apivoted comb normally housed within the other side of the frame. said brush being adapted when tilted, to expose its teeth at one side of. the frame and the l'u'istles of the brush on the other side thereof.
9. A device of the class described comprising a frame. a brush being mounted within the frame and comb pivotallv mounted within said frame and adapted; when tilted to expose its teeth on one side of the frame and to actuate the brush to expose its bristles on the other side of the frame, said brush and comb being normally housed within thefrai'ne.
