Description

W. BUJNOWSKI.
CMBAND BRUSH.
APPLICATION FILED IMI. I3. 1919.
Patented Aug. 12, 1919.
FIG. 1.
UNITED STATES PATENT l WLQDZIMIERZ BUJNOWSKI, 0F PERU, ILLDTOIS.
COMB AND BRUSH.
To all whom it may concern:
Bc it known that I, WLODZIMIERZ BUJ' Nowsnr, a citizen of Poland, residing at Peru, in the county of La Salle and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lCombs and Brushes, of which the followingis'a specicatio-n.
The primary object of the invention is toY provide a combined brush and comb whereby both of said toilet articles will only take up the room of one of the same while both the brush and the comb are readyv for immediate use when desired and a mirror also forms a portion of the device.
A further object of the invention is to provide a hair brush having a comb incased therein when not in use but readily swung to open positionl for the combing operation when desired, the invention being easy and inexpensive to manufacture'as well as compact and pleasing in appearance.
W'ith these general objects in view the in-A tion of the comb-holding side of the brush.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, a brush is provided having a body portion or back consisting of two similar parts 10 and 11, the part 10 forming the back of the brush and provided with a mirror 12 while the part 11 is provided with the bristles 13.
The brush is provided with a handle formed of cooperating handle portions 14 of the sections 10 and 11. A comb having a back 15 and teeth 16 with a handle 17 is pivoted for swinging between the brush sections 10 and 11 by means of a pivotpin 18 passing through the handle portions 14 of the brush sections as well as the handle 17 of the comb. In this manner, the comb 15 may be swung inwardly upon its pivot 18 and be entirely hid from View between the Specicaton of Letters Patent.

brush portions 10 and 11 indicated by dotted i lines 19 in Fig. 1 of the drawing. Y A block-20 is secured between the free end portions of the brush sections 10 and 11 byY means of a rivet 21 and the comb 15 abuts against the said block'20 when the brush is in its operative position, a notch 22 being formed in the comb for engaging the block.. A knurled lug 23 upon .the comb 15 is adapted to be engaged by the finger of they operator for shifting the comb upon its pivot 18. A spring-pressed latch 24is carried by the brush sections 10, having a plate 25 flush with the outer face of the brush handle, the said latch being adapted to automatically engage within a keeper socket 26 ofthe comb 15, when the comb is closed, but permitting the outward swinging of the comb whenV force is applied to the lug 23.
An arcuate strip 26 lis provided betweenl the .brush sections .10 and v11 inwardly of the opposite. sides of the brush sections 10 'and 11 to that in which the comb 15 is accommodated when closed, bolts 27 being provided through the strip 26 and sections 10 and 11 for retaining the strip in position as well as leaf springsv 28 outwardly projecting from the strip. The adjacent inner faces ofthe brush sections 10y and 11 are cut away as at 29 to accommodate the springs 28 and it will be understood that when the back of the comb 15 moves inwardly of the cut-away portions 29, the comb engages the springs 28 as well as the outer face of the strip 26 and the said springs retain the comb 15 in said open position ready for active use.
The complete operation of the device will be app-arent from this detailed description thereof, it being seen that when the comb 15 is held open by the springs 28 the handle of the brush as well as the handle 17 of the comb may be readily grasped by the operator for using the comb 15 in combing the v hair. At such times, the brush is also in position for use for drawing the bristles 13 thereof over the hair.
The comb 15 may be forcibly withdrawn from the springs 2-8 and swung upon the pivot 18 for again seating it between the brush portions 10 and 11, and may be substantially concealed from' view, retained by the latch 24 seating within the socket 26.
What I claim as new is 1. A device of the class described comprising a brush having the back and handle portions thereof formed in two separated sections providing a space therebetween, a comb having a handle 'pivoted between the handle port-ions of the brush with the comb adapted for seating inclosed within the space between the brush sections, a block between vthe brush sections against which' the comb is adapted to abut when inclosed within the brush, releasable means adapted for retaining the comb within the 'brush and independent positioning means for the comb when in its operative position at one side of the brush. 'i
2. A device of the class described comprising 'a brush having the back and handle portions thereof formed in two separated sections providing a space therebetween, a comb having a handle pivoted between the handle portions of the brush with the comb adapted for seating inclosed within the space between the brush sections, a block between the brush sections against which the comb is adapted to abut when inciosed within the brush, releasable means adapted for retaining the comb within the brush, an arcuate strip between the brush sections at one side of the brush with said sections cut-away upon their inner adjacent faces and adjacent said strip, spaced leaf-springs secured at opposite sides of the strip extending into said cutaway portions adapted for resilient engagement with the comb when swung into said cut-away portions and seated against said strip with the comb positioned for use at Copies of this patent may be obtained for the side of the brush opposite its norm-ai inoperative position.
3. A combined comb and brush including a brush body formed lof two spaced sections, a comb having `its handle portion pivoted to the handle of said brush and lying normally housed between the brush sections, a block at the outer end of the brush section co'- operating with said comb to form spacing members for the brush sections, said block limiting the closing movement of said comb, and a curved stop' block at the opposite side of said brush from the comb adapted to engage the rear edge of the comb to hold the same in open operative position adjacent the edge of the brush.
4. A combined comb and brush including a brush body formed of two spaced sec-tions, a comb having its h'andle portion pivoted ,to the handle of said brush and lying normallyy housed between the brush sections, a block at the outer end of the brush section cooperating with said comb to form spacing members for the brush sections, said block iimiting the closing movement of said comb, a curved stop block at the opposite side of said brush from the comb adapted to engage the rear edge of the comb to hold the same in open operative position adjacent the edge of the` brush, and spring arms associated with the curved stop adapted to engage opposite sides of the comb.`
In testimony whereof I aiiX my signature.
