, Be it known that T, Hauler Barr, a citizen, of the i the followingis a specification.
One obJect of thislnvention is to provide a tobacco pipe embodying novel features of construction andhaving the smoke conduit from the bowl formed of two sect1ons, one
of which forms the bottom of the bowl and, is, removable for cleaning and the other of which comprises a tube removably mounted in the stem of the pipe and detachably' connected at one endto said firstmentioned vide a tobacco pipe having a removable plug" section, whereby the smoke conduit be easily kept cleanjand prevented from becomlng saturated with tobacco 111M361 fl-IlClSilllVa,
Further objects of the invention are to pro- ,inuie bottom of the bowl thereof with one ceive one end of saidtube; to provide such a v 30.
of the pipe, said end of thesaid plug being 'adaptedto frictionally and removably retohacco pipe havinga non-absorbent plug anda renewable tube in the stem, where by the smoke conduit at the bottom of the bowl and in the stem of the bowl is prevented from becoming saturated with tobacco juice and the said tube in the stem can be de stroyed and replaced by a clean tube, and
- to obtain other results and advantages as may be brought out by thefollowing description. l n
lteferrlng to the accompanylng' drawings,
in which like numerals of reference inclicate the same parts throughout the several views Figiire 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through a tobacco pipe embodying my invention; y
Figure 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view through the bowl thereof, taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view through the stem of the bowl, taken on the line 3-30f Fig. 1, and
Figure 4 is a detached view partially in section ofa modification in the'connection off the plug and the tube. a
In the drawings the reference character 1 United States, and a resident of of Essex and State of in Figure 1, whenthe stem designates the bowl of a pipe which is formed with theusual integral laterally projectingstem 2 which is provided with an axial passage 3. My invention comprises a cylindrical plug "4: formed of non-absorbentmaterial which is mounted in a passage 5 transverse of the bottom of the bowl 1 and in alinen'ient withthe passage 3 of the stem of the bowl, said plug being provided with ajfinger piece or head 6 for removing the same from the passage 5. The plug t is formed with an axial smoke passage 7 and has one side thereof cut away as at 8 to form communication between the passage 7 and the bowl ofthe pipe, as shown in Figures 1 andQ. The inner end of the plug is formed with a reduced axial extension 9 which projects into the passage 3, and the said passage is formed with an annular shoulder 10 to limit the insertion of the plug 4 into the passage 3.
The stem or mouthpiece 11 of the pipe is removably fitted into the/end of the stem 2 ofthe bowl, and is formed with a bore 12 adapted to relnovably receive a tube 13 which projects from the end of the stem and isadapted to frictionally fit over the reducedextension 9 of the plug 4c, as shown 11 is in position inthe pipe. The bore 12 is provided at its outer end with a shoulder 14 which limits the insertion of the tube 13 into the stem. The inner end of the plug a is preferably formed inwardly of the extension 9 witha tapered portion 15 againstwhich the end of the tube 13 is slipped so as to form a tight connection between the tube 13 and the plug 4:.
With this construction, the non-absorbent plug 4 prevents the bottom of the bowl 1 from becoming saturated with tobacco juice, and the plug can be easily removed for cleaning the bowl. The moisture in the smoke collects on the walls of the tube 13, which is formed of inexpensive material, such as paper, and can easily be removed from the stem 11, discarded andreplaced by a new tube to clean the stem of the pipe. The connection of the tube 13 with the an tension 9 of the plug 4 is a sliding frictional fit, so that to remove the tube 13 it is merely necessary to pull the stem 11 out of the stem 2 of the bowl and slide the tube from the bore 12.
A; modified construction is shown in Figure 4, in. which the inn? E lll (If the plug 4 is formed with an enlarged opening 16 to frictionally receive the end of the tube 13 within itself.
The pipe can be kept clean and sanitary by simply removing the plug t and cleaning the same and replacing the tube iaanaa will be noted that the smoke conduit consisting of the plug 4E and the tube 13 is thus prevented from becoming saturated with tobaccof juice and saliva.
Having thus described the invention, what I .claimis: y
l. Ina tobacco pipe, the combination with a bowlha'ving a stem and an opening arranged transversely of the bottom of said bowl and through said stem, and a mouthpiece remov'ablymounted in the end of said stem, of a plug fremovably mounted in said opening in the bowl and having a passage communicating with said bowl and said stem and axial alinement with said mouthpiece, and a tube 'remova'bly mounted axially in said mouthpiece and having a detachably longitudinally sliding frictional connection with the inner end of said plug.
3. In a tobacco pipe, the combination with a bowl having a stem and an opening arranged transversely of the bottom of said bowl and through said stem, and a mouthpiece removably mounted in the end of said stem, of a plug removably mounted in said opening in the communicating with said bowl and said stem, the inner end of said plug having an axial reduced portion, and a tube removably mounted in said mouthpiece and having one end titted over-said reduced extension on the said plug.
at. In a tobacco pipe, the combination with a bowl having a stem and an opening arranged transversely of the bottom ol said bowl and through said stem, and a mouthpiece removably mounted in the end of said stem, of a plug removably mounted in said opening in the bowl and having a passage communicating with said bowl and said stem, the inner end of said plug having an axial reduced portion, and a tube removably mounted in said mouthpiece and having one end detachably and vfrictionally slipped over said reduced extension on the plug, whereby the passage in said plug and said tube form a continuous smoke conduit. Y
In a tobacco pipe, the combination with a bowl having a stem and an opening arranged transversely of the bottom oil said bowl and through said stem, of a mouthpiece removably connected to the end of said stem and having an axial bore therein formed with a shoulder, a plug removably mounted in said opening in the bowl and having an axial passage connnnnicating with said bowl and said stem, the inner end of said plug being tapered and terminating n a reduced axial extension, and a tube removably mounted in said bore in the mouthpiece and engaging at one end said shoulder, the other end ol? said tube being adapted to frictionally slip over said extension on the plug and against the tapered end thoreoli as the mouthpiece is connected to said stem.
