LEWIS E. WEGNER, HAGERISTOWN, MARYLAND.
TON'GrS.
Application filed June 8,
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, Lnwrs E. WEGNER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Hagerstown, Maryland, haVe invented certain Improvements in Tongs, of which the following is a specification. A
My invention relates to improvements in blacksmith tongs, the object of my inven' tion being to provide tongs having novel and superior gripping means rendering them work and insuring a tight grip upon the held article. The invention will be readily understood by reference to the attached drawings, in which:
Figures 1 and 3, are side views of tongs made in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2, is a top view of the tongs, and Fig. 4, is an end view. My tongs consist of the usual levers or handles 1 and 2, which are pivoted near one end by means of a spindle 3, and whose ends, 4 and 5 respectively, adjacent the pivot 3 are formed to constitute a pair of jaws between which articles maybe gripped. In the present instance these ends 4: and 5- are provided with lateral extensions 6 and 7 respectively, said extension 7 having its inner face convex and the extension 6 being wider than the said extension 7 and having its inner face concave to correspond substantially with the inner convex surface of the arm 7 The opposed faces of these extensions 6' and 7 are separated slightly from each other when the jaws are closed except at the tips, and there are in the faces thereof laterally and oppositely, disposed grooves 8 which provide sockets for the reception of articles which it is desired to hold between the jaws.
To effect the concavity of the extension 6, the said extension in the present instance is grooved longitudinally, and this groove 9 is extended across the face of the jaw 4. Upon the opposed face of the jaw is a substantially semicircular projection 10 which, when the 1921, Serial No. 475,885.
jaws are closed, fits into the said groove, as most clearly shown in Fig. 3, said projection preferably being such that when the tip ends 4 and 5 of the jaws come together, the apex of the projection 10lies in contact with 01' close to the face of the opposite aw 4:. Lateral grooves 11 oppositely disposed in the jaws t and 5 provide sockets for the re- It has been found that with this cornbination of elements a particularly tight grip may be had upon articles of substantially any shape, there being in practically every Instance a three-point contact between the jaws and article, and with a minimum of effort applied to the handles 1 and 2, to hold them together, a firm'grip may beretained upon the articles held between the jaws. I claim:
' OFFlC-Eg 1. Tongs comprising a pair of pivotally' 7' connected cooperating jaws, one of said jaws having on its working face a substantially hemispherical projection, substantially asdescribed.
2. Tongs comprising a pair of pivotally connected cooperating jaws each having a lateral elongated projection which together held slightly separated, and a substantially of the aws;
.75 constitute additional jaws, the tips of each pair of jaws being turned in so as to meet" coincidently with each other and ahead ofv the working faces whereby the latter are v hemispherical projection on the face of one 3. Tongs comprising a pair of pivotally connected jaws, adjacently disposed extensions on said jaws, the face of one of said extensions being grooved longitudinally and said groove extending across the face of the. jaw, and a substantiallyhemispherical pro to registerwith said groove.
