Be it known that l, PETER H. Fnnninn,
Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook andl State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Boiler, of which the following is a speciiication. This inventionrelates'to boilers, and an obj ect of the invention is to provide a boiler construction wherein the greater or major portion of the heat from the product of combustion or gases from the lire box will be utilized in heating the water and creating heat, resulting in a material reducing of the temperature of the gases upon their exhaust from the stack of the boiler.
Another obj ectof this invention is to provide a boiler construction as specified, wherein water heads are positioned both in the front and rear of the tire box and with which water heads tubes communicate which tubes also have communication with the main steam, and water chamber of the boiler,
causing a circulation of the water through the tubes, about which the exhaust gases pass and further to provide a plurality of baflies in the space between the fire box and stack for causing the gases of combustion to travel in a sinuous path about certain of the tubes, causing a greater contact between the gases and the tubes and resulting in a maximum hea-ting eiciency of the boiler structure and further to construct said baflies to permit them to retain a head of water therein which will also be heated by 'he gases engaging against the said bafflies.
Other objects of the inventionwill appear in the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which drawings:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through the improved boiler.`
Figure 2 is a section taken on the line 2 2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a cross section taken on the line 3 3 of Figure 1, and
Figure 4 is a longitudinal section through the boiler showing the same adapted for use upon a locomotive.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates the fire box of the boiler construction which has positioned therein a grate 2 of the usual construction, through which air or draft is drawn for passing up- Specication of Letters Patent.

wardly through the fuel indicated at 3 within the lire box. The walls, of the tire box are hollow being formed of spaced sheets of metal l and 5 which are connected by suitable stays 6 so as to provide a strong construction. The spaces between the sheets e and 5 of the walls of the lire box have communication with the main steam and water chamber 7 of the boiler, as clearly shown in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings. This main steam and water chamber 7 of the boiler is formed in the usual manner of sheet metal and it has hollow wall constructions 8 and 9 connected thereto, the lower ends of which are connected to a bottom plate 10 to form a space or guideway for the gases of combustion from the tire box 1 to the stack 11 of the boiler.
The innermost wall 12 of the fire box construction is provided with an opening 13 therein which has communication with the space between the walls 8 and 9, allowing the draft to pass upwardly through the space 14 beneath the grate 2, through the grate re box 1, opening 13 and outwardly through the stack 11. A plurality of tubes 15 extend vertically through the space v13 having communications at their lower ends with the interior of the wall 12 and at their upper ends with the depending port-ions of the chambers 7 allowing the circulation of the water through the wall 12 and tubes 15 into the chamber 7. A plurality of baille plates 16, 17, 18, and 19 extend downwardly within the space 20, between the opening 13 and the stack 11. These bullies are hollow, and adapted to contain water, haviin); communication at their upper edges with the chamber 7. The lower edge of the ballles 16, 17 and 18 engage the upper surfaces of tubes or pipes 21 which extend longitudinally through the space 20. The lower end of the tubes 21 has connininication with the interior of the tire arch or inner wall 12 of the tire box while their upper ends have communication with the lower port-ion of the batlie 19. rlhis baffle 19 inclines toward the forward or outer end of the boiler or toward the inlet end of the stack 11, and a Vbaffle plate or guide plate 22 is positioned lions 2G and battle 19. rlhe battles 1G, 17, 18 and 19 also Vhave connnunication with the side walls ot pipe or tube 21 and they are disposed stag` gcrdlj-,f' with the bal'l'les 16, 17, 1S and 19 so as to cause the gases or products ol combustion from the tire box 1 to travel in asinuous path as indicated by the arrows in Figure 1 lrom the opening 13 to the inlet or the stack 11, resulting in a greater surface contact between the gases and the tubes or pipes 21 and also between the gases and the ballles, resulting in the utilizing o1" the major portion of the heat of the gases for heating the water within the pipes or tubes and the bellies, consequently heat-ing the water to a higher temperature with the same amount et heat than could be done with the ordinary straight tube boiler through which tube the heated gases nass in a straight line or path.

`From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, itY will be apparent that a boiler construction has been provided which presents a maximum surface area oi the water containing portions thereol, ier engagement by the gases or products oli combustion created within the lire box, resulting in the heating of the water to a maximum temperature upon the utiliza- .tion oi minimum quantity oit fuel.

1. ln a boiler, the combination, of a lirebox having hollow water containing walls, a main water and steam chamber, a stack, an enclosed passage communicating with said stack and fire-box, and a plurality ot water conducting tubes positioned within said enclosed passage and having direct communication with the interior of one wall of the lire-box and with said main water and steam chamber, and a plurality of hollow baliles extending into said enclosed passage and having communication with the interior of lsaid main water and steam chamber, said baiiles arranged in staggerd relation to guide the combustion gases in a sinuous path from the tire-box to saidV stack, the inner wall ol said lire-box provided with an opening having` communication with said `enclosed passage, and a plurality of vertical tubes extending across said-opening Aand having communication with the interior of the main water and steam chamber and the mterior of the inner wall ofthe fire-box.
2.
