To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, PAOLO A. PnTnUoor, a subject of the King of Italy, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in ater-Heaters for Boilers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to boilers, and has special reference to water heaters for boilers which are provided with smoke boxes at one end, such as locomotive boilers, etc.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap, simple and eflicient water heating device, which can be applied to such'form of boilers, will enable the preheating of the water fed to the boiler for use therein, and will provide for a free circulation of the water being fed to said boiler at all times.
To these ends my invention consists, generally stated, in the novel arrangement,'construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter more specifically set forth and described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to construct and use my improved water heating device for boilers, I will describe the same more fully referring to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a sectional view of the front end of a locomotive boiler, showing my improved water heating device applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same on the line 2-2 Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows and with the spark netting removed;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the upper discharge pipe of the heater and its connections with the coil members;
Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic view showing the arrangement of connections between the coil members and the delivery and discharge pipes;
Fig. 5 shows a horizontal section of a locomotive boiler having another form of my invention applied thereto;
Fig. 6 is an enlarged cross-section showing the lower portion of the boiler, and
Fig. 7 is an enlarged view of one of the boiler fines employed in Figs. 5 and 6.
Like symbols of reference herein indicate like parts in each of the figures of the drawings.
Asillustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings, 1 designates the ordinary form of a locomotive boiler, which is provided with the usual smoke box 2 at its front end and into which lead the smoke flues 3,.from the fire box (not shown) at the rear end of the boiler, such flues passing through the usual water space 4: in such boiler, and being supported in the usual front sheet head at the rear end on the smoke box 2. The smoke box 2 is provided with the usual eX- haust pot 6 leading up from the bottom of the same for the exhaust steam from the cylinderslnot shown), and has the usual exhaust tip or opening 7 at the upper end from the smoke box 2, and a spark arrester netting 9 extends from the front end of the bottom plate 10 and at an upward incline toward the front end 2 of the smoke box where it is attached in the usual manner.
The bottom plate 10 is preferably formed of sheet metal and extends from the flue head 5 horizontally toward the front end 2' of the smoke box 2 and around the exhaust pot 6, such netting 9 being attached at its lower end to the front end of such bottom, and such bottom is also provided with the usual damper 11 pivoted therein and ad jacent said flue head which is automatically opened when the usual superheating device a forthe steam is used and the locomotive is working.
Leading from the locomotive tender tank and passing through the usual ejector. (not shown) is the water supply pipe 12 which connects with a check valve 13 at one side of the smoke box 2 and with the heater A, through the main water deliverypipe 14: leading from said pipe 12 into the smoke box and extending across the same. This delivery pipe 14 is secured within any suitable connection 15 on the smoke box 2 at its supply end, and is provided with a flange union 16 at such end, while its opposite end is closed by any suitable cap 17. Above the bottom plate 10 is the diaphragm or sheet plate 18, which is preferably formed of sheet metal and extends vertically up from said bottom plate and out to the sides of the smoke box 2, so that it fills the space in said box above said bottom, plate and back of the inner portion 8' of the stack" 8. The heater A is positioned on part of the diaphragm sheet 18 and above the bottom plate 10. The delivery pipe 14: is centrally of the same. The usual smoke stack 8 leads of the heater A'and parallel with and above and below said delivery pipe are the discharge pipes 19 and 20. These pipes 14, 19 and 20 are supported at the front end of the heater A by means of the clamps22 around the same and connected to vertical'brace rods 23 between such pipes. The discharge pipes 19 and 20 connect with the vertical co-il'members 25 of the-heater A, as hereinafter described, and empty into ther'water space 1 7 of the boiler 1 byv means' of the rearwardly extending portions 19' and 20 on said pipes.

Each of the coil members 25 are provided with the inner and outer coil pipes 26 and 27 and each of's'aid coil pipes in the upper groups 5 have a short supply pipe 28 connecting with the same and with the delivery pipe 1 1 and its branch pipe 14L and at the lower ends of said coils, while each ,ofthe coil pipes 26 and 27 in the lower groups I) have .a like 7 short supply pipe 28 connecting with the upper ends of the sameand the said delivery pipe and its branch pipe. Various other modifications and changes in the design, construction and application of my improved water heating device for boilers may be resorted to, without depart ing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
It will thus be seen that the use of my improved heating device for boilers will supply hot water to the boiler at almost a boil ing point by reason of the products of combustion from the boiler coming directly in contact with such heater in passing through the smoke fines and. smoke box to the stack, and such products being all waste products from such boiler no loss of heat from the boiler will be had in the use of the device. The use of the device in the boiler will not permit any loss of steam in the boiler and will save the use of coal or other blasting fuel for the boiler by reason of the water being lied to the water space of the boiler in a highly heated condition, while the use of the heater in supplying hot water instead of cold water to the boiler will also enable the nozzle tip of the exhaust pot to be made large if? desired, so that the locomotive will thus burn less fuel, will run faster on the same fuel and with less steam pressure.
it will also be seen that when my improved water heating device is applied to a locomotive boiler, enlarging of the nozzle tip will make the back pressure in the cylinder much less, as the locomotive will. not need a strong draft to make a bright fire to heat the water that enters the boiler, as the water is heated in the heater before entering the boiler. ll ith the usual small size nozzle tip used at the present time in locomotive boilers, it my improved heater is applied thereto, the boiler will be popping out steam all the time when the locomotive is in working motion by reason of the heated water entering such boiler instead of the usual cold water, so by enlarging such tip a lighter draft will be created and less fuel will be required, thereby avoiding such continuous popping.
.t will further be obvious that the coil members of my improved heating device can be positioned at different locationsin the boiler and the heater can be applied to any boiler with very ittle expense and without interfering with the operation of the other parts of the boiler. The coil members of the heater can be used with the larger fire or smoke-fines of the boiler when the super heater not used. and can also be used with any of such tubes not used by the superheater, as well as any smoke lines which are below the super-heater tlues.
It will also be obvious that by the arrangement of the groups of coils and their connecting pipes, a free circulation of water is created when the water is not fed in the lower and upper groups and discharge pipes of the heater.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A water heating device for steam boilers having a smoke box and smoke fiues opening into said box, said device comprising coil members within said smoke box and arranged in upper and lower groups, a main delivery pipe within said smoke box con nected to a source of water supply and with the lower portions of the upper groups and upper portions of the lower groups, and dis charge pipes in said smoke box connected to the upper portion or" the upper groups and lower portions of the lower groups and leading into the water space of the boiler, said members and pipes adapted to be heated by the products of combustion passing thr nigh said smoke dues and smoke box.
2. A water heating device for steam boilers having a smoke box and smoke flues opening into said box, said device comprising coil. members within said smoke box arranged in upper and lower groups and having inner and outer coils, a main delivery pipe within said smoke box connected to a source of water supply and with the lower portions of the coils in the upper groups and upper portions of the coils in the lower groups, and discharge pipes in said smoke box connected to the upperportions of the coils in the upper groups and lower port-ions of the coils in the lower groups and leading into the water space oi the boiler, said members and pipes adapted to be heated by the products of combustion passing through said smoke flues and smoke box.
3. A water heating device for steam boilers having a smoke box provided with a stack, exhaust pot and smoke fines opening into the same, said device comprising coil members arranged in upper and lower groups within said smoke-box and on each end of said stack and pot, a main delivery pipe within said smoke box connected to a source of water supply and connected to the upper portions of one group and the lower portions of the other group, and discharge pipes in said smoke box and connected to the
