Be it known that l, CHARLES SEYMOUR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Little Rock, in the county of Pulaski and State pf Arkansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Steaml3oiler Superheaters, of which the following is a specification.
lThis invention relates to improvements in steam boiler superheaters and has particular application to a superheater' of the so called smoke box type, that is to say, of the type in which the superheating appliances are located in the smoke box of a fire tube steam boiler.
In carrying out the present invention, it is my purpose to provide a superheater of the class described in which the maximum superheating surface may be presented and the heat of the smoke box eectively and thoroughly imparted thereto during the travel of such gases from the tubes to the stack.
It is also my purpose to provide a smoke box superheater which will be found especially useful on the steam boilers of locomotive engines and which will be so associated with the steam pipes leading to the cylinders as to superheat the steam previous to the latter entering such pipe, thereby enabling the superheated steam to be delivered to the drive cylinders immediately succeeding the supcrheating thereof.

Figure 1 is a cross sectional view through the smoke box of a locomotive boiler equipped with a superheater constructed in accordance with the present invention.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, 1 designates the smoke box of a steam boiler. Leading'into the smoke box 1 at the upper end thereof is a steam pipe 2 connected to the steam space of the boiler and arranged in juxtaposition to the smoke box end of the steam pipe 2 'is a steam box 3 divided by means of horizontal partitions 4 into steam chambers 5 and 6 and extending across the steam box 3 below the partition 6 is a vertical partition 7 that divides thesteam box into chambers 8 and 9 and arranged in the chambers 8 and 9 respectively are deflector plates 10 having the relatively opposite ends thereof inclined downwardly, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. In open communication with the relatively opposite ends of the chambers 8 and 9 at the lower ends of the respective partitions 1n said chambers are curved steam conduits 11 that lead to the drive cylinders of the locomotive and are curved to conform to the curvature of the sides of the boiler. Interposed between the conduits 11 and the sides of the boiler respectively are super heaters 12 each in the form of a casting curved longitudinally to conform to the curvature of the conduits and divided into intercommunicating passages by means longitudinally extending curved partitions 13. Alternate partitions 13 terminate short of one end of the casting, while the remaining partitions terminate short of the opposite end of the casting so as to provide the longitudinally extending intercommunicating passages as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The outermost passages in the castings of the superheaters are in open communication with the chamber 5, while the innermost passages in the respective castings communicate with the compartments S and 9 so that the steam that is superheated in one casting will be delivered to the opposite conduit, as will be readily understood by referring to the arrows in Fig. 1.
At the bottom of each casting are plugs 14: which may be removed to facilitate cleaning of the superheaters.
Arranged in advance of each superheater and surrounding the front part thereof is a guard or hood 15 that acts to maintain the heated gases in contact with the superheater and the conduits for a relatively long period of time.
ln practice, the steam from the boiler flows from the pipe 2 through the steam box 3 and traverses the passages formed in the superheaters and is then delivered through the steam conduits 11 to the drive cylinders of the engine.
While l have herein shown and described the preferred form of my invention by way of illustration, li wish it to be understood that do not limit or confine myself to the precise details of construction herein described and delineated, as modification and Variation may be made Within the scope of the claim and Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
A smoke box superheater comprising a steam box connected to the steam pipe leading from the boiler and to the curved pipe connected to the engine cylinders and formed to provide chambers, and superheaters between the curved pipes and the outside sheet of the boiler and in open oommunication With said steam box and the pipes in the smoke box and each formed with longitudinally extending curved pan titions, alternate partitions terminating short of one end of the casting and the remaining partitions terminating short of the other end of the casting to form intercommunicating passages, said passages forming a circuitous path for the same whereby Jthe latter may be delivered through the curved pipes to the drive cylinders of the engine.
