MUFFLI'NG-BBEATHEB-VALVE ATTACHMENT.
Application filed June 16,
To all whomit may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL B. GOLD, a
citizen of the United States, residing at or noiseless manner; ,A further object is to Y produce a construction of this character of simple, strong, durable and cheap construction.
To these ends "the invention consists in certain novel and peculiar features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter described and claimed {andin order that it may be fully understood reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing,
in which Figure 1', is an inner faceview of a mufiiing breather valve attachment embodying the invention. 7 1
Figure 2,is a horizontal section of the same as applied to an internal combustion engine.
. In the said drawing, 1 indicatesthe engine recessed circularly as at 2, and 3 indicates.
a head to fit against the end of the engine and in said recess, the rear edge of the head heplurality of opposing lugs 4. I e
Bolts 5 extend. through the head, to secure the same rigidly to the end of the engine, and said head is provided with a plurality of large openings 6, bridged at their outer sides by cross pieces 7 cast integral with the heads.
Valve stems 8 extend slidingly through the cross pieces 7 and the openings 6, and are equipped at their inner ends with flat valves 9 to cover their respective openings 6 and bear against the inner side or face of the head 3.
Coiled springs 10 fit loosely aroimd the stems 8 and hear at their inner ends against the cross pieces 7 and'at their outer ends against washers 11 fitting and secured on Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 4, 1922. 1919. as... 304,604.
ployed to facilitate the tensioning adjustments of the springs.
In the operation of the engine the proper V gas therein and form a combustible mixture, the valve instantly reseating as the piston movement ends, under the reaction of the springs 10. I
To muffle the intake action a substantially hemi-spherical cap 13 is fitted against the lugs 4: of the head 3, the cap preferably having corresponding lugs 141 to fit against said lugs 4 and cooperate with the same in providing a narrow air inlet 15, the cap being secured in place by cap bolts 16 extending through the said lugs and into the bodyportion of the engine.
I claim:
1. In an internal combustionengine, the
combination with a crank case open at its rear end, of an annular head secured to the crank case over said opening and provided with a plurality of air intake openings, valves covering said openings at the inner side of the head, yielding means for holding the valves normally closed against themtrance of air into the crank case, and a cap secured to said head at the outer sidethereof; said head and cap being spaced apart to provide passages for'the entrance of air to the cap. I
2. In an internal combustion eng ne, the
, combination of a crank case open at its'rear end, a perforated head covering the rear end of the crank case and provided at its rear side with a marginal flangehaving a plurality of rearwardly projecting lugs, yieldingly-closed valves for said perforations and adapted for opening only to admit air to the.
crank case, and a hemi-spherical cap at the rear side of saidhead, and provided with forwardly projecting lugs engaging the logs of said head and cooperating with'the latter in spacing the head and cap apart between across its perforations. disk valves fitting bridge bars and at their outer ends against against the inner face of the head and coversaid. nuts, and a hemi-spherical cap fitting ing the perforations thereof, stem extending at points against the outer side of said head H; centrally from the disk valve through said and spaced from the latter between said bridge bars, nuts upon the outer ends of points t provide inlet passages.
said stems, coiled springs around saidstems In testimony whereof I affix my signature. and bearing at its inner ends against the SAMUEL B. GOLD.
