Cylinders, construction of.-To enable inlet and exhaust valves k, l to be readily removed together with their springs and guides, the cylinder head f is removable and the valves &c. are mounted in sleeves h inserted in apertures bored in the radiating ribs, or the valves may be housed in chambers cast integral with the cylinder. The valve guides t are spaced from the sleeves h by flanges or by radial ribs and are secured by screws v. The valves are each actuated by a cam n acting upon a loose tappet r. In order to keep the cylinder head near the exhaust port p cool, the port is open at the front and sides, and may be fitted with a metal liner surrounded by asbestos or the like. In a radial-cylinder engine, the cylinders are integral with a central crank-case and the cams n are positioned by pins o engaging recesses in the cams.
