' eol tra WILLIAM T. SHERER, OI CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
'runivrruan :oni-twee. Y
To all fr0/wm t may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM a citizen of the United States, residing at (lhicagc, in the county of Cook and State Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Furniture Drawers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in furniture drawers and the like and has for one object to make a furniture drawer from which leakage of its contents is impossible. Other objects will appear from time to time throughout the specification and claims.
T. SHERER,
My invention is illustrated incre or lessV diagrammatically wherein:
Fig. l is a vertical section of a drawer embodying my construction, with parts broken away; V
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken at the line 2 2 of Fig. l;
-Fig 3 is a rear elevation of thevdrawer with parts broken away; Y
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the key bar;
F ig. 5 is a bottom view of a drawer with a modified form of my construction;
Fig. 6 is a vertical section on the line 6 6 of Fig. 5;
Fig. 7 is a vertical section on the line 7 7 of Fig. 5;
Fig. 8 is a view similar to Fig. l illustratinof a further modified form;
Fig. 9 is a horizontal section on line 9 9 of Fig. 8; y
Fig. 10 is a horizontal section on line l() l0 of Fig. 8.
' Like parts are indicated by like characters throughout.
A is the front of a furniture drawer having the handle A1. B is the bottom of such a drawer. O is the rear of the drawer. B1 B1 are the sides of the drawer. D is a key bar having in its upper surface the slot D1 and along one of its sides the second slot D2. In the modified form I provide the horizontal extension D3 along the bottom of the key bar. This may be perforated as at D4 to allow the insertion of a roller D5. In
one form of my invention the ends of the key bar D are dovetailed as at D6 to fit into the dovetailed slot B3 in the side B1. The sides B1 B1 have the interior slots B2 B2 adjacent their rear ends. They are also slotted as at B4f along their bottom.
When the drawer is assembled the grooves in the key bar will `normally be filled Specification of Letters Patent.

with glue or other adhesive material into which the bottom and the end parts will be thrust.
rThe use and operation of my invention are as follows:
Heretofore it has been diflicult if not impossible to prevent the leakage between the bottom and the sides or ends of furniture drawers. It is of particular importance to prevent such leakage'where the drawers are used to contain small granular material and the like. In my construction I provide a key bar slotted along its side which slot fits over the bottom of the drawer. I provide a slot on the upper surface of the key bar into which slot the end of the drawer slides and fits. When this relation of parts is fixed as for example by gluing or nailing them together I make leakage of contents and separation of parts absolutely impossible. In my drawings I have illustrated several modifications. In the form shown in Figures 5, 6, and 7, I provide a forward longitudinal extension of the key bar. One advantage of such a construction is that it provides a convenient means for mounting a roller under the rear of the drawer. An-
other modification is shown in Figures 8, 9,
and 10 wherein the key bar is dovetailed into vertical slots in the rear of the drawer sides. When this form is used the key bar is fitted into these slots, the end of the drawer is also dovetailed and litted down into the slot in the upper surface of the key bar and the 'bottom of the drawer is subsequently fitted into the slots in the bottom of the drawer sides and .into the slot in the side of the key bar, and, lastly, the front of the drawer is fitted on and secured in place.
Although I have shown in my drawings an operative form of my invention still it will be understood that many changes might be made, both in shape, dimension and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention. For example, the modifications of Figures 6 and 9 might be combined. Other changes will readily suggest themselves and I wish therefore that my drawings be taken as in a sense diagrammatic.
I claim- 1. A. drawer comprising side, bottom and end members, a key bar provided with two slots, one to engage the end of the bottom member, the other to engage the lower edge of an end member, the side members being dovetziiled to engage the edges of the end member and the ends of the key bar.
2. A drawer comprising side, bottom and end members, a key bar across the rear o'l' the drawer, said ber being provided with two slots, one to engage the end of Jche bottom member and the other to engage the lower end of the rear member, the side members being dovetailed grippingly to engage jche edges of jche roer member and the ends of the key ber, the side members being slotted at the front to interlock wit-h the front member.
'edges of the rear member and theends of the key bar, the side members being slotted at the front to interlock with the front member.
Signed et Chicago, county of Cook, and State of lllinois, thisth day of April. i920.
