This invention relates to ,a haircurler and it is primarily an object of the invention to provide a device-of this kind for use in the production of a page-boy hair-do.

Furthermore, it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind comprising an element around which the hair is adapted to be rolled, together with a member for holding such wrapped hair to the element and in a manner to produce a desired hair denting.

The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved hair curler whereby certain important advantages are attained, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order that my invention may be better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing wherein:

Figure 1 is a view in top plan of a hair curler constructed in accordance with an embodiment of the invention with the clasp member in inoperative or extended position.

Figure 2 is a view in side elevation of the device as illustrated in Figure 1 with the clasp shown by full lines in effective position and by broken lines in ineffective or outer position; and

Figure 3 is a transverse sectional View taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.

In the embodiment of the invention as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, E denotes a tubular, cylindrical element of metal or other preferred material open at opposite ends and which as herein disclosed is made from one sheet of material of requisite size and thickness having the end marginal portions thereof clinched as at l or otherwise rigidly connected. The wall 2 of the element E is provided at points therearound with relatively small openings 3 and said wall 2 is provided entirely therealong with a straight depression 4 providing a groove or channe1 open at opposite ends of the element E and which is positioned entirely inwardly of the peripheral surface of the element E. Closely adjacent to one end of the element E the base portion of the groove or channel 4 is provided with an opening 5 through which is freely insertable from without a short lug or arm 6 disposed substantially at right angles to the elongated bar 1 of the clasp member M. This lug or arm 6 is at one end of the bar 1 and is herein disclosed as being in continuity therewith.

The extremity of the lug or arm 6 inwardly of the wall 2 of the member M is upset or otherwise element-E .so. that the clasp may assume .a position to permit the same to be swung outwardly upon an end of the element E with the lug or arm 5 serving as the pivot. The opening 5 is also of a diameter sufficiently in excess of the diameter of the arm or lug 6 to permit the bar 1 to have sufiicient swinging movement in a direction substantially radial of the element E to permit the bill 9 0f the clasp member M to have effective holding engagement with or release from the end of the element E remote from the end portion of the element E with which the clasp member is pivotally engaged.

The bill 9 of the clasp member is disposed inwardly from the end of the bar 5 remote from the arm or lug 6 and in the same general direction and also substantially at right angles to the bar 1. This bill 9 is disposed on a slight inward curvature and possesses sufficient inherent resiliency to permit the same to readily pass the adjacent end edge of the groove or channel 4. The inward curvature of the bill 9 is sufficient to underlie the adjacent end portion of the bottom wall of the groove or channel 4 whereby the clasp member may be effectively held in workin position in a manner to permit the same to be readily freed as desired. The freeing or releasing of the clasp member M may be facilitated by applying suflicient pressure by a finger of the hand on the free or outer end of the hill 9. This bill is of a length, when the clasp member M is in working position, to terminate at approximately the axial center of the element E.

The device as herein embodied is particularly adapted for use in making a page boy hair-do and for which reason the element E is of a material radius as compared to its length although it is to be stated that the dimensions of the element E and the clasp member M may be varied within certain limitations, it only being essential that the major diameter of the element E be such as to avoid making rolling bumps in the hair. As it is well known, the curls required in the production of a page boy are large.

In the use of the device as herein embodied, the hair is rolled around the outer part of the element E with, of course, the clasp member in extended or inoperative position as shown in Figure 1. After the required rolling of the hair the clasp member is disposed over the hair and operatively engaged with the element 'E, the action of the clasp member being such not only to properly clamp the hair rolled upon the element E but to force portions of the hair within the groove or channel 4 in order to produce the hair denting which is necessary in the production of a page boy hair-do.

From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a hair curler constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated.

I claim:

1. A device for curling hair comprising an elongated cylindrical element, the periphery of the element being provided therealong from one end to the other with a groove and a clasp member comprising an elongated bar to be received within the groove, one end portion of the bar having an angularly disposed arm, the wall of the groove at one extremity being "provided with an opening through which said arm is freely disposed, means carried by the outer extremity of the arm for limiting the extent of outward movement of said arm through the opening and means carried by the end portion of the bar remote from the arm and frictionally engaging the opposite end portion of the element to hold the clasp member in effective position.

2. A device for curling hair as set forth in claim 1 wherein the cylindrical member is tubular and provided in its Wall at points therearound with openings.

3. A device for curling hair as set forth in claim 1 wherein the cylindrical member is of a relatively large diameter as compared to its length.

4. A device for curling hair as set forth in claim 1 wherein the means for iriotionally engaging the cylindrical member comprises a laterally directed bill disposed on an inward curvature.
