Be it known that I, Rocnn ALoYsIUs KAHL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of lVallingford, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collar-Buttons, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to collar buttons adapted for use at the front of the shirt band, and it contemplates certain improvements in my pending application Serial No. 324160, filed September 16, 1919.

The purpose of my invention is a provision of a button which will permit the ready application and removal of a collar to and from a shirt without distorting, tearing or in any manner injuring the button holes of the collar. Furthermore, my invention provides a button and means for preventing the accidental displacement of collar ends having worn or loosely fitting button holes, and means for accommodating the rounded edges of the shirt and collar button holes upon the shank of the button to maintain the ends in proper relative positions upon the button shank. My invention also provides means for holding the button in place upon the shirt band when the shirt is removed.

I will describe one form of button embodying my invention and will then point out the novel features thereof in the claims.

Referring specifically to the drawings, the invention in its present embodiment comprises a fiat base B of relatively large area and upon which is formed a shank S. The shank S extends centrally from one side face of the base B and comprises a single sheet of metal which is relatively thick as compared to the base B. This sheet of metal is notched upon its opposite longitudinal edges to provide recesses 15, 16, 17 and 18. As shown Specification of Letters Patent.

in. Figs. '2 and 3, the receses 15 and 16 formed on one edge of the shank are dis posed at different points with relation to the recesses 17 and 18 formed in the opposite edge of the shank. The recess 17 is disposed contiguous to the base B and is designed for the purposes of receiving the inner end 21 of the shirt band and for holding the same in contouring alinement. The recess 15 is adapted to receive a portion of the other end 22' of the shirt band in the manner shown in Fig. 2 while the recesses 16 and 18 are formed for the purpose of receiving the collar ends 23 and 2 1 respectively.

s illustrated to advantage in Fig. 4, the opposite sides of the shank S are formed at corresponding points with transversely extending grooves 19, such grooves being arranged to provide slight recesses for receiving the .rounded edges of the shirt and collar button holes. The walls of these grooves 19 engage the opposite sides of the shirt and collar ends to prevent lateral displacement of one with respect to the other so that in the applied position of the collar button as shown in Fig. 2, the collar and shirt band ends are securely held against lateral displacement upon the shank. As shown in Figs. 3 and 1, the outer end of the shank S is slightly thicker than the remainder of the shank to provide a head 20, the edges of which are rounded in order to permit the ready insertion of the button into the holes of the collar and shirt band. The thickness of the head 20 is such as to not unduly spread the button holes when applying the collar button. However, the head is sufficiently thick to prevent accidental displacement of collar ends therefrom having worn or loosely fitting button holes.

In the applied position of the collar but- 13011 as shown in Fig. 2, the several notches 15, 16 etc., serve to receive the shirt band and collar ends in the manner shown and thus prevent displacement of the same from the shirt under the circumferential pull which is exerted between the two ends of the shirt band and collar, the grooves 19 maintaining the collar and shirt bands in their proper position as has been described. It is to be particularly noticed that the notch or recess 17 also acts to secure the button in place when the shirt is not in use so that accidental displacement from the shirt is prevented.

Although I have herein shown and dethat various changes and modifications may be made herein Without departing from the vspirit of the invention, and the spirit and scope of theappended claims.

I claim:

1. A, collar button comprising a base, a shank formed on the base and having a pair of notches formed in one longitudinal edge thereof and another pair o1 notches formed in the other edge thereof, the notches of the first pair being arranged in staggered relation With respect to the notches of the other pair, and transversely extending grooves formed on the opposite sides of the said shank at points coinciding with said notches 2. A collar button comprising a base, a shank vformed on the base having shirt band and collar end receiving recesses formed in the opposite edges thereof, and transversely extending grooves on opposite sides of said shank coinciding With said recesses.
