NURSE'S CAP Filed May 16, 1944 ATTORNEY.
Patented Feb. 4, 1947 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,415,250 NURSES cArf Jacques S. La Belle, Los Angeles, Calif. Application May 16, 1944, Serial No. 535,803
4 Claims. (Cl. 219 8) This invention relates to caps, and specifically to a nurses cap construction.
7 l it the presenttime, it is customary to provide a cap for nurses which is usually formed from a one-piece body of fabric, which may be folded into form and held by a button. These caps, in addition to being flimsy, easily mussed,
and requiring frequent laundering, are not reversible so that either side of the body may be used.
Anobject of the present invention is to provide a nurses cap so constructed and arranged as to h permit a forming of the cap and a securing of portions of the cap together without the use of be detailed in the description.
In the drawing:
"Figure l is a perspective view of my improved p: I Figure 2 is a perspective view of the cap shown in Figure 1, a certain portion thereof being in changed position from that of Figure 1, 1
Figure 3 is a perspective View of the cap blank folded to one position,
Figure 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of the obverse side of the body blank shown in Figure 3,
Figure 5 is a sectional view on the line 55 of Figure 3,
Figure 6 is a view of the improved cap after reversing the same from the position shown in Figure 1,
Figure 7 is a plan view of the cap blank, and,
Figure 8 is a perspective view of a modified form of the cap.
Referring now with particularity to the drawing, the improved cap is formed from a blank of fabric material of the shape shown in Figure 7. In Figure '7, the body blank I has an elongated edge 2, two side or marginal edges 3 and 4, the top edge being curved inwardly at 5 and 6, with an elongated outwardly extending tongue 1 which is cut to provide two tabs 8 and 9. Preferably, the body I is formed of two thicknesses of fabric l0 and II which are sewed together adjacent the margin of the body blank, as indicated by 2 t 1 parallel lines of stitching at 12 and I3. In th present instance, I do not use buttons nor button holes, but prefer to use quick-detachable elements, such as the. well known snap fasteners, which are formed in two parts, comprising a stud member and a socket member. In the present instance, I secure to the outer surface of one fabric member Ill, and at selected zones thereof as shown in Figure 7, socket members M which are adapted to cooperate with stud members l5, secured to fabric II of tabs 9 and I0. At l6 on fabric I0, I have provided one or more socket members adapted to cooperate with a stud memberl'lonfabricll. I r
In Figure 8, I have shown a modified form of my invention wherein the tab shanks terminate in enlarged heads, the shanks of each'respective tab beingnarrower in transverse width than the base l8 of each head. I provide a slot or way in the edges 5 and 6, between fabrics l0 and II, as
shown at I9 and 20, the slot or way having a This gives the body the form shown in either Figures 3 or 4, which provides the front portion 22 of the cap and the rear portion 23. These portions are in juxtaposition and both portions are then curved with the snaps I6 and I7 interengaging to hold ends of the portion 23 together in the manner shown in Figure 2. The tab members 8 and 9 are then bent downwardly so that the stud members l5 engage the socket members I 4, in the manner indicated in Figure 1. It will be observed that all of the quick detachable securing elements are covered and not visible when the cap is formed as just described and as shown in Figure 1, which is the completed cap. In Figure 1, the fabric ll forms the outer surface of member 22 and also forms the outer surface of member 23. However, the tongue 1 with its tabs presents as its outer surface the fabric I0.
If now it is desired to reverse the cap, the surface I I having become soiled or for other reason, the quick detachable elements are separated and the cap again folded along its medial line 2| so that the fabric It] becomes the outer surface for front portion 22 of the cap. The procedure is the same as before, in that stud member I1 is received within one of the socket members l6,
, as shown in Figure 6, followed by engagement of the stud members I 5 with the socket members I4. In this instance, the tab ends, instead of being viewed externally, as shown in Figure 1, are now partly hidden from view as shown by the dotted line position in Figure 6. The same neat appearance is preserved and the quick detachable elements are hidden from view.
In the form of the invention shown in Figure 8, I so form'the ends of the tabs that the quick detachable metal fasteners thereforzillustrated in the other figures are not used. However, I do use the fasteners of the type shown at l6 and I! to secure the ends of member 23. The tab heads are inserted through the narrow slots 19 and 20 between the fabric members 10 and H. The heads may be slightly folded so as to readily pass through the restricted slots 19 and 20, and then pressed into flat position thereafter. In this form of construction, it is evident that the top member of the cap, which constitutes the tongue and tabs, have the same appearance both before and after reversal of the cap.
I claim:
1. A nurses cap including a substantially rec- "tangular blank, formed with a pair of tabs extending laterally from one longitudinal edge and intermediate the ends of the blank, said rectangular blank adapted to be longitudinally folded upon itself snap fasteners for ,detachably fastening the ends of said blank together when said blank is" folded longitudinally upon itself in either direc- "tion, and snap. fasteners for detachably fastening the ends of said'ta'bs to the ends, respectively, of
the blank when the blank is folded longitudinally upon'itselfin either direction and its ends are detachably fastened together.
2. A-nurses cap, including a substantially rectangular blank, a tongue outwardly extending from one longitudinal edge of saidlblank, said blank formed and-constructed to be folded along a longitudinal .lineto divide the blank transversely and thereby provide'outer and inner .headwhereby when the outer and inner bands are in head-encircling position and the quickly detachable means of the inner band are joined, the
.quickly detachable means of the tongue may en- 4 gage the quickly detachable means of the inner band and provide a crown with all of the quickly detachable means hidden from View.
3. A nurses cap, including a substantially rectangular blank and a tongue both formed with two fabric members, said tongue outwardly extending from one longitudinal edge of said blank, said blank being foldable along a, longitudinal line to divide the blank transversely and thereby provide outer and inner head-encircling bands, snap fasteners for the corners of the inner band for holding the inner band in position of service, snap fasteners carried on one of the fabric members of the tongue and snap fasteners carried on the opposite fabric member of the inner band, whereby when the snap fasteners of the tongue engage the snap fasteners of the inner band, all the snap fasteners are hidden from view.
4. A nurse's cap, including a substantially rectangular blank and a tongue formed fromtwo identical fabric members, one longitudinal edge of th blank curving inwardly toward the opposite edge thereof, said tongue centrallypositioned and extending outwardlyfrom said curved edge, said tongue divided to provide a pair of tabs said blank adapted to be folded on a longitudinal line to divide the blank transversely and provide outer and inner head-encircling bands, snap'fasteners carried on opposite surfaces of the blank for securing the opposit ends of the inner band together, snap fasteners carried by one fabric themher ofthe tabs, and cooperating snap fasteners carried by the opposite fabric member of the inner head-encircling band, whereby the fabric sides may be reversed to form an identicalgcap,
the snap fasteners being at all times hidden from view when the cap is formed.
