MORTIMER 0. LEE, on NEW YORK, N. Y,
IMPROVEMENT m LOCK-HINGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,092, dated April 22, 1873; application .filed March 29, 1873.
To all whom it may concem:
Be it known that I, MORTIMER 0. LEE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Window-Blind Fastener, of which the following is a specification:
The invention relates to an improved hinge for locking window blinds and shutters, the lower or pintle portion having two shoulders or foot-holds, with which a pawl, pivoted to the upper portion of the hinge, engages when the blind is swung open, and whereby, also, it is adapted for use upon either side of a window.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side view of the device applied. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same. Fig. 3 is a top view, showing the blind turned the other way and fastened by the same pawl. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are top, side, and bottom views of the projection and projection-plate when made separate,
so as to apply the invention to hinges now in use.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
A represents the casing or window frame. B is the blind or shutter. G is the hook or pintle portion of the hinge. D is the strap or portion attached to the blind or shutter. E is the projection behind the hook or pintle F of the lower hinge. This projection may be formed by cutting away the bar at the base of the pintle, as seen in "Fig. 1, or it may be attached to the bar. In either case it will be raised sufficiently to form foot-holds or ratchet shoulders G at the base of the pintle. The
hinge is provided with two foot-ho1ds or ratchet-teeth, as seen in Figs. 2 and 3, and the fastening answers for either blind of the window, and consequently the hinges with their fastening need not be made in pairs, as is usual with fastenings of this description, and which is frequently a very great inconvenience to the purchaser. His a pawl, which is attached by means of a rivet to the blind portion of the hinge, as represented in the drawing. The pawl is made so that it drops down by its own gravity when the blind is turned back, and catches behind one or the other of the notches Gr, according to the side of the window on which the blind is placed. When the projection E is made separate so as to be attached, the projection-plate is slipped over the pintle and rests on the pintle-bar, with ears or lugs I I on its under side, which ineloses the bar, and holds the projection-plate steady.
When it is desired to close the blind, the pawl is raised, which releases it and allows it to swing freely.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The pintle portion E of a lock-hinge, provided with the shoulders Gr G on its upper side adjacent to the pintle F, whereby it is adapted for use on either side of a window, and to cooperate with the leaf D and pawl H, as specified.
