IMPROVEMENT IN SHUTTR-FASTENINGS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,5S`5, dated October 14, 1873; application filed l september 5, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES A. MoERrs, of Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fasteners for Doors, Blinds, and Shutters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The object of my device is to provide a strong, durable, and effective contrivance to fasten or lock doors, blinds, shutters, and the like, in any position desired; and the invention therein consists mainly in the employment of an annular rack, rigidly attached to the door or blind, and the connection therewith of' a suitable drop-catch, as will be fully described hereinafter.

To enable those skilled in the art to construct my fastener, I proceed to describe the same in connection with the drawings hereto, in which- Figure l is an elevation, in perspective, of a frame, showing my fastener inposition; Fig.

2, a separate view of a lever-catch lock, with a portion of the rack in section; Fig. 3, a vertical section of my drop-catch lock and rack on the line .fr w of Fig. l; and Fig. 4, a separate view of the drop-catch shown in Fig. 3.

In a window, door, or other frame, A, having doors, blinds, or shutters B, there is secured to the door, blind, or shutter, near the bottom, as shown, an. annular rack,C, made of suitable cast or wrought metal, which has the drawings, but both operating on the same.

engage with a tooth or cog on the rack; the other, a drop-catch, having a case, E, and within the same a drop, F, having a serrated face, e, and a stud, j', by which it may be raised.

The operation of my contrivance is so obvious, upon inspection, as to require n o explanation, and the advantages consist in strength, simplicity, and effectiveness, the annular or segmental rack being capable of use to hold a door, blind, or shutter in any position, and lock it there.

Having thus described my fastener, what I claim as new therein and my invention is- The annular rack C', rigidly secured to theblind, in combination with. the drop-catch F held in the case E, as described.
