Description

E. BR UNHOFF.
DISPLAY uo. APPLICATION FILED DEC-20, 1919.
Patented May 31,1921.
starts EDWARD BRUNHQFF, OF GIN GIN N ATI,
DISPLAY-LID.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, lflnwnnn BRUNHOFF, a citizen of the United tates, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Display-Lids, of which the following is a specification.
licly invention relates to improvements in detachable display and advertising lids. One of its objects is to provide a lid for packages of goods displayed for sale adapted to be detachably applied to protect the goods from injury through dust, moisture, want of moisture or similar cause, and to provide a means for advertising the goods. Another object is to provide improved means to detachably apply the lid to the original package. Another object is to provide improved means to hinge the lid relative to the original package, and to provide for lifting and lowering the lid, and for retaining the lid in its raised position. My invention also comprises certain details of form, combination, and arrangement, all of which will be fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an original package with my improvements applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a similar View with the lid in the open position.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the lid supporting band detached.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional detail of the hinge members with the lid in closed position.
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4 showing the position of the parts when the lid is in the open position.
Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 3 showing a modification.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the preferred embodiments of my invention in which 1% represents an original package, as for instance a package of cigars, about to be placed for display and sale upon a shelf or counter, and from which the original lid has been removed to give access to the goods. My improved lid 15 is designed to be detachably employed and applied to the original package during the period the goods are on display to protect the goods from injury such as the accumulation of dust thereon, the goods becoming too dry or too moist, or from other injury liable to occur to the goods. The lid is also designed to add to Specification of Letters Patent.

the appearance of the goods, and as an ad vert smg device to attract and direct the attentlon of purchasers thereto. It is also designed to permit cursory inspection of the goods without lifting the lid to the detriment of the goods on display.
In order that these several objects may be attained to the best advantage 1 preferably provide alid 15 of transparent material, glass, for instance, through which the goods may be seen, and to either the upper or under surface of which advertising matter 16 may be applied to attract the attention of purchasers. When the advertising matter 1s attached to the under face of the lid to show through the same, a particularly bright and attractive appearance may be given to the advertising matter calculated to more readily'direct the attention of a prospective purchaser thereto. Also the upper face of the lid may be a plane highly polished surface readily adapted to be kept free from dust and in a. clean condition to attractively display the goods, all of which are features of importance in the adaptation and use of my improved device.
In order to mount and support the lid I provide a metallic binding 17 encompassing the edge thereof, and to which is attached a metallic hinge member 18, preferably by soldering, brazing or similar method of attachment. The hinge member 18 projects downwardly into engagement with a hand lever and hinge member 19 to which it is rigidly attached by brazing or similar method said member 19 having formed therein an eye 20 to receive a hinge rod 21.
A metal band or strip 25, preferably with its upper and lower edges folded inwardly to form a smooth finish or head 26, is provided and adapted to be fitted to the upper edge of the original container 14 in place of the downwardly turned flange of the original cover or lid of the container. The band 25 is provided with projecting ears 2S hav ing eyes 29 to receive the hinge rod 21 and pivotally connect the lid 15 to the band 25. In order that the axis of the hinge rod may be so placed with reference to the original package, the hand lever, and the lid that the lid will remain in its open position as well as in its closed position, by reason of the center of gravity of the lid being upon one side of the hinge rod in the closed position, and upon the opposite side thereof when the lid is open, the ears project laterally from i the band so that the eyes 29 are some distance from the band 25. Also the hand lever 19 is set atsuch an angle with reference to the lid that when the lid is in closed position the hand lever projects outwardly in posi-' tion forvan operator to press his thumb or finger upon the hand lever and thereby lift the lid, and when the lid has reached a position where it will remain in the open position, the hand lever will have reached a position to engage the outer face of: the band 25 at the point 30, to thereby limit the movement of the lid and bring it to a stop in a position where it will remain of its own accord in open position until closed bythe operator. The bead 32 ordinarily employed on original containers serves to limit the telescopic movement of the band 25 over the open end of the container. Ordinarily the bands 25 are made in quantity of a standard diameter adapted to fit standard dimensions of the containers. If desired however, a band 3a having a gap therein and adjustable in diameter ,to lit-the upper edge of the container by means of projectingears 35 and 36 and a screw 37, or similar means for adjusting the gap as shown in Fig. 6, may be employed.
The advertising matter may be etched upon the under face of the lid, or applied to either the under or upper face of the lid, and is preferably arranged with unobstructed spaces through which the goods in the original package may beobserved Without lifting the lid.
The apparatus herein illustrated and described is capable of considerable modification without departing from the principle of my invention.
ll hatl claim is V A display lid for vending purposes comprising a cylindrical supporting member beaded at and be supported upon the open end of an original package, a lid comprising a sheet of transparent material having a metallic binding member provided with a hinge member to connect said lid to the exterior of said supporting member, and means to engage the exterior of said supporting member to limit the movement of said lid, said lid in its closed position resting upon the upper edge of said supporting member.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
EDWARD BRUNHOFF.
