Description

W. W. REID.
BOX.
Patented Jan. 17, 1922.,
Y seen in Fi WALTER W. REID, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BOX.
To all who/m. it may concem:
Be it known that I, WALTER W. REID, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York-and State of New York, have invenlted certain new and useful Improvementsin. Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates more particularly to boxesmade of pasteboard, which ordinarily contain candy or something of that nature to be exhibited by the Store-keeper pending sale of the same.
The objects of the invention are to provide an improved box of this character in which the goods may be shipped and in Which they may be displayed to advantage upon receipt by the Store-keeper; to provide a box in which the goods may be securely held during shipment, to utilize a portion of the box for holding the container portion in tilted position; to provide an advertising surface by means of which the goods may be advertised while being displayed; to secure simplicity of construction, ease of manufacture, and to obtain other advantages and results as may be brought out in' the following description.
Referring to the accompanying drawings in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the box as it is shipped to the customer or storekeeper;
' Figure 2 is a perspective view of the box partially opened, and
igure 3 is a perspective view of the box in display position.
In the specific embodiment of the invention illustrat'ed in said drawings, reference numeral 1 indicates the container portion of the box on Which is adapted to be telescopically applied an outer member or cover 2. When the box is shipped to the customer or Store-keeper this outer member overlies the container 1 as shown in Figure` 1 so as to retain the contents of the box against displacement or loss. As may be .re 1 the side walls 3 of the outer mem er 2 are cut, as at 4, from a point near one end at the upper edge to a point near the other end at the lower edge.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed `Tanuary 11, 1921.
Platented Jan; 17, 1922. Serial No. 436,526.
The upper or top wall of the cover is perforated, as at 5, the line of perforations connectlng the upper ends of the cuts 4. When the Store-keeper receives the box, he can readlly sever the upper .wall on this line of perforations, as has been done in Figure 2.
Either or both ends may have suitable flaps 6, 7 which will fold over the end of the container and keep the same within the telescopic member during shipment. After the cover has been severed along the perforations 5, and before the outer member can be arranged to display the container, it is first necessary to open the end of the outer member and slide the container outwardly as shown in Figure 2. At this time, upper portion of the outer member may be swung upwardly into a vertical position, the lower Wall of the outer member being hinged or bent along a line 8 connecting the lower ends of the cuts 4. The container may then be slid backwardly into position as shown in Figure 3. It will therefore be obvious that the box will rest on a surface With the container tilted and the upper portion of the outer member Standing upright.
Suitable advertising matter 9 may be placed on the inside of the upper portion of the outer member, and this will be conspicuous in association With the goods displayed in the box. f It will be also understood that it isadvantageous to provide the end flaps 6, 7 for the outer telescopic member so as to retain the container in position While the goods are being' displayed, and these not only prevent said container from sliding downwardly out of position, but also add to the attractiveness and neatness of the box.
Obviously detailed modifications and changes may be made in the construction and use of my invention, and I do not wish to be understood as confining myself to the exact structure shown except as set forth in the following claims when construed in the light of the prior art:
1. A display box comprising a container and an outer telescopic member having its side walls severed and having perforations across the top adjacent one end whereby the upper portion of said outer member may be swung With respect to the lower portion of said member to receive one end of the container for supporting said container in display position.
2. A display box comprising a container and an outer telescopic member having its sides cut from the top edge near one end to the bottom edge near the other end whereby the upper portion of said outer member may be swung With respect to the lower portion of said member for receiving one.
end of the container to support said container in display position.
3. A display box comprising a container, an outer telescopc member having its side walls severed from a point at the upper ledge near one end to a point at the lower edge near the other end and having perforations across the top adjacent one end whereby the upper portion of said outer member may be swung with respect to the llower portion of said member for receiving one end of the container to support said container in display position.
I. A display box comprising a container and an outer telescopic member, said telescopic member having a portion adapted to receive one end of the container between its side walls to support said container in tilted position and having another portion adapted to receive and contain the other end of said container while held in said tilted position. s
5. A display box comprisng a container and an outer telescopic member, said telescopic member having a portion adapted to receive one end of the .container to support the same in tilted position and having another portion adapted to receive and contain the lower end of said container while held in said tilted position, said outer member having flaps for closing the other end of the member Which receives the container.
In testimony Whereof I aflix my signature.
WALTER W. REID.
