Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr, 19, 1921,
Application filed September 25, 1920. Serial No. 412,656.
btate of Pennsylvania have invented cer-' tain new and useful Improvements in Icecreepers 'of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in ice creepers and the objectof the invention is to provide a device of this kind which is extremely simple and durable in construction and capable of being eas ly manipulated for belng placed into practical use. I
The invention broadly embodies a substantially U-shaped inverted base member with a right and left hand screw disposed longitudinally therebeneath and journaled in the ends thereof, and heel engaging clamps slidably carried by said base member and having threaded' connection with the screw wherebyturning movement of the lat-' ter vwill causerelative movement of the clamps, the ends or legs of the base member being'provided with anti-slipping means for engaging the ice.
Other objects will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, and the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described. shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In the drawing, wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in vertical section of an ice creeper constructed in accordance with the present invention,
Fig. 2 is a top plan View thereof Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken upon line 1IIIII of Fig.1,
Fig. 4; is an end elevational view of the device shown in Fig. 1,
Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional 'view taken upon line V-V of Fig. 1,
Fig. 6 is an enlarged perspective view of one end of the base member,
Fig. 7 is a'perspective view of one of the toothed calks, and
Fig. 8 is'a perspective view of one of the heel engaging clamps. r 1
Referring more in detail to the several views, the present invention embodiesa sub stantially Ushaped inverted base member 5 with the horizontal intermediate portion thereof longitudinally slotted froma point adjacent the center to the ends as at 6, leaving a central connecting web 7. The angular ends or legs of the base member 5 are indicated at 8 and are provided with transverse slots 9 slightly wider than the slots 6 and communicating with the latter, and the intermediate portions 10 of the heel engaging clamps 11 are snugly slidably disposed through the slots 9 beneath the horizontal portion of the base member. The inner end of each clamp 11 is directed downwardly at right angles and centrally provided with a screw threaded aperture 12 having threaded engagement with the adjusting screw 13, one end of which is provided with a left hand screw thread and the other end of which is provided with; a right hand screw thread.
The outer end of which clamp is bent upwardly and inwardly in the usual manner to provide heel penetrating edges as at 14, and the upwardly extending portion is reduced to provide a neck 15 whereby the base member 5 and clamps 11 are slidably connected. One end of the screw 13 is journaled in an aperture 16 of one of the base member legs, and the other end of said screw freely projects through an aperture As shown clearly in Fig. 6, the lower edges of the legs 8 may be serrated or notched as at 19 so as to provide ice penetrating spurs so as to guard against shpping when the device is used upon the heel of a shoe. However, it is sometimes desirable to use the present device upon the instep portion of the shoe sole just forwardly of the brace of the heel,'which requires a greater length to the legs so as to insure engagement of the spurs with the ice while keeping the heel from engaging the latter. In order to provide for this use, split sleeves 20 are clenched upon the legs 8 so as to depend a distance below the lower edges of the .latter, and the lower edges of said sleeves are serrated to provide the ice engaging spurs as at 21. The journaled end portion of the screw 13 may pass through the ape'rture22 of one of the sleeves 20 as; shown in Fig. 1 so as to secure said sleeve in place in addition to the clamping of the latter'on the leg 17 in the other leg of the, base member and is of the base member, and the squared end 18 loosely projects through a larger circular aperture 23 in vthe other sleeve 20. The upper edges of the sleeves 20 are notched or cut away as at 24; for slidable reception of the horizontal portions 10 of the clamps 11.
In using the device, it is merely necessary to rotate the screw 13 in one direction so as to separate the clamps 11 sufficiently to permit the latter to assume a position spaced from the side edges of the shoe sole or heel, after which the screw is rotated in a reverse direction for causing the edges 14: to penetrate the shoe sole or heel, and the device is then securely fastened in position so that the wearer may safely walk upon the ice without danger of slipping by reason of the spurs 19 and 21.
It is believed that the construction and operation as well as the advantages of the present invention will be readily understood and appreciated by those skilled in the art from the foregoing description. 7
Minor changes may be made therein with out departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is 1. An ice creeper embodyinga base member of substantially U-sha'ped inverted form and having longitudinal slots in the horizontal central portion thereof each extending from a point near the center of saidcentral portion to the ends of the latter, the
legs of said base member being, provided neath the central portion of the base member and supported by the legs of the latter, said screw being of right and left hand form, clamping plates including horizontal portions slidably fitted in the transverse slots of the base member legs and having depending inner ends with the screw threaded therethrough, and means upon the legs of the base member formed for non-slipping engagement with the ice, said last named means including split sleeves clamped upon the legs of the base member andhaving serated lower edges; 7 r
:2. An ice creeper embodying a base member of substantially U-shaped inverted form and having longitudinal slots in the horizontal central portion thereof each extendfitted in the transverse slots of the basememthe ice,,said last named means including split sleevesclampedupon the legs of the base member and having serrated lower edges, saidsleeves being further provided with aperturesthrough which the ends of said screw gproject and having notches in their upper edges slidably receiving the horizontal portions of said clamps. V j In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
