To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Anoms Ponce on LEON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sampaloc, Manila, Philippine Islands, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Erasers; and I do hereby declare the following to be full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in erasing devices and particularly to devices for erasing printed matter such as typewriting, or other writing or printing.
One object is to provide a novel and improved device of this character which is automatic in its operation, thus relieving the operator of the physical exertion of manipulating the eraser.
Another object is to provide a novel and improved device of this character which includes a motor for rotating the erasing element, with novel means for starting and stopping said element. y
A. further object is to provide a novel and improved device of this character wherein the speed of rotation of the erasing element can be easily and positively governed.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.

Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 represents a casing having the removable back wall 11 and the lower offset extension 12, formed thereon. The front wall of the casing, in the lower portion is formed with a curved opening which is slightly greater than a half circle, as shown at 13, and surrounding this opening is the externally threaded flange 14: for enend of this shaft is rotatably supported in an opening 21 in the center of the bottom wall of the hollow boss 22 formed in the center'of the rear removable wall of the casing. Formed on the outer face of this latter boss is a circular flange Within which the angular portion 23 of the shaft is exposed and arranged for the engagement thereon of a key 24- for winding the spring 25 which is disposed within the casing or drum 26 through which the shaft 20 is centrally disposed. One end of the spring 25 is secured to the shaft 20 while the other end is'secured to the drum. On the shaft 20, within the hollow boss there is secured the ratchet wheel-27 which is engaged by the escapement pawl 28 pivoted on the bottom wall of the said boss. Forming the front wall of the drum, and secured for rotation therewith is a large pinion 29 which meshes with smaller pinion 30 mounted on a shaft 31 which is supported by the front wall of the casing in the upper portion of the opening 13. Also mounted on the shaft 31 is a somewhat larger pinion 32. and this pinion meshes with a smaller pinion 33 on the shaft 17.
Secured on the shaft 17 is a sleeve 34 which is formed with a flange 35, and engaged on the sleeve and clamped against the flange by means of the disk 36, which is screwed onto the outer end of the sleeve, is a disk eraser element 37, the lower portion of which projects from the bottom of the casing, while the upper portion turns within the plate or disk 15.
The periphery of the drum is formed with a series of openings 38, as clearly shown in the drawing. Pivotally mounted on the inner face of one of the side walls of the casing is an angle'lever 39 one end being formed with a nose 4:0 for engagement in any one of the openings 38 of the drum. A spring 41 presses the lever so as to urge the nose into the openlngs, while a button 42 is carried by the other end of the lever and ex tends through an opening 43 in the side wall of the casing for engagement by the linger or thumb of the operator. On the inner face of the button carrying end of the lever there is secured a leather or rubber button 4A whi h is arranged for engagement with the peripheral face of the drum when the outer button is pushed inwardly beyond the position where the levers nose is disengaged from an opening of the drum. This permits the operator to control the speed of the rotation of the drum, when the motor is started, so that the erasing disk will not turn too fast. The spring 41 is designed to instantly swing the lever into such position that its nose will be reengaged in one or another of the openings 38, when the outer button 42 is released.
In the operation of the device, the operator simply places his finger on the button 42 and presses inwardly, with the result that the nose of the lever will be released from the drum and the drum permitted to drive the erasing element through the medium 01 the pinions. The operator then presses the erasing-disk against the paper at the point the erasure is to be made and holds the deinstant that the button 42 is released the lever reengages the drum and stops motion.
What is claimed is:
'1. An automatic eraser comprising a casing, a motor in the casing including a rotatable drum, an erasing element driven by the motor, a manually releasable detent for holding the motor inactive, said detent being movable through a part of its movement to release the motor, and means carried by the detent and engageable with the drum upon movement of the detent past its releasing movement to act as a brake on the drum.
2. An automatic eraser comprising a casing, a motor in the casing including a rotatable drum having a longitudinal series of openings in its periphery, an erasing ele ment driven by the motor, and a manually releasable detent including a centrally pivoted lever mounted in the casing and having an angularly extending nose on one end for releasable and interchangeable engagement in the openings of the drum, a fingerpiece on the other end of the lever movable through one wall of the casing, and a friction member carried by the inner face of the lastnamed end of the l ver for engagement with the peripheral fa"e of the drum.
