. Application led The object of the present invention is to effect an improvement on the. construction disclosed in my prior Patents N o. 1,477,048, issued December 11, 1923, and No. 1,507,278, issued .September 2, 1924.
One of the objects of the invention is to effect an improvement in the construction of the indicating drum. Instead of the drum being made of a single piece, it now consists of two pieces including a ring encircling the drum proper, on which rin the scale is stampedor aixed. Inside o the drum there is a 'fiat spring, instead of a spiral spring, as shown 1n my priorpatents, this flat spring holding the ring in proper position, but permitting the ring to be revolved yaround the drum proper.
A ,further object of the invention is to roe an alarm bell that will sound wento the typist that oint lsignalling ci) in the work sheet the pre etermined point has been reached.
'With these and other objects'in view, my
invention-consists'of certain novel and peculiar features of construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed, andin order that ly understood reference. is to be had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Fig; 1 is a-` longitudinal section of the applied to a .Remington machine; v i
Fig. 2 isa section on the line 2 2 of Fig.`
drum; and v Fig. 4 isan elevation showing the lbell operating mechanism. f
eferrin more particularly to the drawmg, 1 is t e platen oi"r a Remington mae attachment is secured to the machine by means lof the arm 2 having the splitl sleeve 3 which fits over the stationary part 4 on the machine and which can be securely fastened thereto by setting up the screw 5 to draw the two parts of the split sleeve together.
The attachment is mounted to rotate on an extension 6 ofthe axle of the platen, the
4 said extension being provided-with the cusit may be clear- ,ring at the october 7, 1925. serial Na. 60,7972.
tomary knurled head 37. Rigidly secured at one end of the 'arm 2 is a stud shaft 8 carrying a pinion 9 adaptedto rotate there-4 on. At the extreme upper end of the arm 2 isa pointer 10 secured thereto by a screw 11, wlilch permits angular adjustment of the said pointer. At the lower end of the arm 2 is a shaft 12 having a bell 13 Vsecured thereto.
Rotatably mounted on the axle 6 is the drum 7 provide-d at the rim with gear teeth 14 which areadapted to mesh with the pinion 9. Between the teethv 14 and the side wall 15 of the drum is interposed the leaf spring 16, comprising a circular portion 17, and an offset portion 18, theends 19 and 20 being normally adjacent each other. Connecting the teeth 14 and the side wall 15 is athin web portion 15', which has, a cutaway section 21 and a smaller cutaway section 22 diametrically lopposite thereto.
Rotatably mounted on the drum 7 is the ring 23 which carries the indicating scale on its circumference.v The leaf springl being normally under compression, the portions l17 and 18, respectively, protrude through the 22 and 'thereby frictionally engage the'inner surface of the Secured to the inner edge of the ring 23A 1s a lug 26 for engaging the tapper arm 27 to ring the alarm. The tapper arm is bent from wire to provide a projection 28 for engagement with the lug V26, the wire then being coiled around the shaft 12 4to provide a spring. For locking the tapper arm so as not to ring the bell, a, lever -29 is rotatably mounted on the shaft12-havin'g a handle 30 and an angular arm 31which` engages the tapper'arm 27 to hold itidown in inoperative. position. A spring linger 32 is adapted to enga 2 to frlctionally loc the lever 29 in set position. The said lever is also provided with an arm 34 for limiting the rotary movement of said lever by engagementwith the lower end of the arm 2. V
en it is desired to set the indicating beginning of the typing of a e notches 33 in the arm 9o in assembled posisheet, it is merely necessary to turn the said ring with such pressure as to overcome the frictional resistance as differentiated from my prior invention, wherein :the whole drum must be moved axially and only after disengagement of the internal gears and pinions could it be rotated to the desired position.
l. A typewriter attachment comprising a rotary drum, a ring provided with indicia normally rotatable -with the drum, a leaf spring interposed between the ring and drum and in rictional engagement with one of them.
2. A typewriter attachment comprising a rotary drum, a ring provided with indicia surrounding the drum, a leaf spring carried by the drum, cutaway portions' on the drum, the said spring projecting through the cutaway portions and in rictional engagement with the ring.,
- Leoaoee a 3. A typewriter attachment including a support adapted to be secured to a fixed part of a typewriter adjacent the axle of the platen roller, a rotatable pinion mounted on said support, a drum rotatably mounted relative to said axlel and provided with `gear ried by the ring for engaging thetapper to operate the bell at a predetermined point, and means for locking the tapper to prevent the bell from ringing at said point.
ln testimony whereof I adix my signature.
