Be it known that I, BURNI-IAM O. STICK- NEY, citizen of the United States, and resident of Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have'invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Writing: Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to writing machines in which a cylindrical'platen isgeared to a line space'wheel', and especially where one function of the gearing is to cause the platen to rotate differently from the line space wheel, so that the impression lines upon the platenoverlap, whereby the surface of the platen is subjected with substantial'evenness to the type blows, and its smoothness is preserved, enabling the machine to make clear type impressions for an indefinite time.
One object of the present invention is to put the gearinginto compact form and also to house it, thereby enabling it to keep clean,
and also'conducing to the neat appearance of the machine.
Another object is to rovide for utilizing the same gearing for e ecting fine rotative adjustment of the platen and the paper thereon, thereby causing a single set of gears to perform two distinct operations.
Another object is to improve the means for effecting automatic longitudinal reciprocations of the platen; and other objects will hereinafter appear.
My invention consists in certain combinations of devices, features of construction and combinations of' parts, all as will be herein.- after more fully set forth and particularly pointed out in the concluding claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan of a platen an d its appurtenances constructedv in accordance with my improvements. A cylindrical platen sheath: 1. of'nubber or other material is mounted upon a. woodencore 2, the latter being. provided. at it's.lefthand end with a head. 3 havinga. hub. 4,.and-I at its opposite end with a head 5 havingia. hub 6, said heads being secured to'the core platen shaft 8, which is j ournaled in end bars 9 and 10 of a platen frame, and carries upon its projecting ends thumb wheels 12 and 13, whereby the platen may be rotated in the usual manner.
Referring particularly to Fig. 3, it will be seen that the right-hand platen head 5 lies within the sheath 1, the core 2 being shortened to make room for said head and other portions of the platen-actuating mechanism. An internal gear 14 is formed upon a drum or shell 15, which fits within the sheath 1, and abuts against the platen head 5, the drum and head being both secured to the platen core 2 by the screws 7. The line space wheel, which is designated as 16, is rovided with a companion internal gear 17 t e wheel having an inwardly extending rim portion 18, and-said gear being attached to the edge of the rim by screws 19. Meshing with the platen gear 14 is a pinion 20, and meshing with the line space gear 17 is a concentric pinion 21 rigid with the pinion 20, thus forming a double pinion, which is pivoted upon the free end of a crank 22. Sa1d crank may turn about the platen shaft 8, being provided with a long actuating sleeve 23 through which said shaft extends, and wherein the shaft may rotate. The line space wheel is mounted upon the sleeve 23, by means of bearin rollers 24, which run within an elongated hub 25 formed upon the line space wheel. Said sleeve 23 is reduced in diameter at 26 so as to take a bearing in the right-hand bar 10 of the platen frame, and also has a threaded projecting portion 27, upon which is clamped by means of a tangentially arranged screw 28 (Fig. 4) the split hub 29 of a finger wheel 30. The finger wheel, sleeve and crank 22 are held stationary during the ordinary line-spacing movements of the platen, by means of a brake or friction washer 31, which works between said hub 29 and a loose washer 32 placed upon the sleeve 26 and bearing against the outer side of the platen frame. Said spring draws a shoulder 23 upon the sleeve against a washer 33 placed against the inner side of the platen frame, thus tending constantly to prevent rotation of the wheel 30, sleeve 23 and crank 22. The line space wheel is confined between the washer 33 and the crank 22.
At Figs. 1 and 2 are illustrated the usual line space pawl 34 and lever 35, the latter being provided with a projection 36, which at the ine spacing operation engages one of the notches in the line space wheel, and locks the wheel and platen against overthrow. The pawl 34 normally stands out of engagement with the line space wheel, and the latter is provided with the usual spring check 37, which serves to position the line space wheel and platen after they have been rotated.
It will be observed that the platen gear 14 is provided with forty-eight teeth, while the line space wheel gear 17 has forty-nine teeth while the pinion 20, which meshes with the platen gear, has twelve teeth, and the pinion 21, which meshes with the line space gear 17, has thirteen teeth. As will be understood by reference to Figs. 3 and 8, these pinions or double pinion is freely mounted upon a pin 38 carried upon the crank 22 and that the diameter of the inion 21 is a trifle greater than that of the pinion 20, while that of the gear 17 has the same excess over that of the gear 14.
When rotative force is applied to either of the finger wheels 12 and 13, it is transmitted through the shaft 8 and the left-hand platen head 3 to the body of the platen, which communicates through the described gearing a retative movement to the line space wheel. W hen, on the other hand, power is applied directly to the line space wheel by the driving pawl 34, movement is communicated through said gearing to the platen. There is, however, a slight difference between the velocity of the platen and that of the line space wheel.
During the ordinary rotation of the platen at the line feeding operation, the crank 22 remains stationary, being held against rotation by the brake or spring washer 31 and hence the pinion 21 is rotated by the line space gear 17 while the pinion 20, which rotates uniformly with the pinion 21, effects the rotation of the gear 14 and hence of the platen. By reason of the smaller diameter of the pinion 20, the velocity of the platen rotation is caused to fall below that of the line space wheel, which is the preferred c011- struction. It will be understood, however, that the invention includes movements of this character in which the platen is caused to creep ahead of the line space wheel, although the present construction permits the employment of fewer teeth on the line space wheel, thus enabling the spring check 37 to operate more effectually.
Since the pinion 20 has twelve teeth and the platen gear 14 has forty-eight, it follows that said pinion makes four revolutions at each revolution of the platen; and hence the gear 17 is caused to revolve through a distance corresponding to four revolutions of the thirteen-tooth pinion 21, or in other words, to make a movement equal to fifty-two teeth, which is 1 3/49 revolutions. In other words, the speed of the line space wheel is to proximates the usual line spacing, but is an aliquant part of 'a complete revolution, so that at successive revolutions of the platen the lines of type impressions overlap, and hence the entire surface of the platen, considered circumferentially, is evenly subjected to the blows of the types. It will further be seen that the pinion-carrying crank 22, besides serving as a stationary support for the double pinion, may at any time be rotated by using the finger wheel 30. The action of the brake 31, while sufficient to hold the crank 22 stationary during ordinary rotative movements of the platen, is not so powerful as to make it difficult to turn the finger wheel 30. Upon turning the crank 22 by means of said wheel, the double pinion 20, 21 is caused to rotate u on its axis 38, owing to its engagement wit 1 the line-space wheel gear 17 which is held stationary by the spring check 37. This rotation of the pinion 21, which is in the nature of a planetary movement, is communicated to the pinion 20, and through the latter the gear'14 and the platen are effected.
During a complete revolution of the crank 22, the double pinion is given 3 10/13 revolutions about the axis 38; and at each revolution of the double pinion upon said axis, the gear 14 is advanced a distance equal to the difference in the numbers of the teeth of the pinions, namely, one tooth. During an entire revolution of the crank, said gear 1 1 is accordingly advanced a distance equal to 3 10/ 13 teeth, this movement of the gear and platen being in the same direction as that in which the finger wheel 36 is rotated. Thus the platen may be finely adjusted while the line space wheel remains stationary, whereby any desired line or point upon the paper may be brought into register with the printing line or point upon the platen, or with the usual platen scale. This adjustment may of course be effected in either direction; and when the line on the paper is adjusted to the scale, either of the other finger wheels 12 and 13 may be operated to rotate the platen two notches to bring the line up to printing position as usual.
It will be understood that the crank may be stopped at any point in its revolution, as required, and that thereafter the double pinion thereon will perform the function before described of causing the platen to creep with reference to the line space wheel at the usual line spacing operation. Thus by a simple mechanism, which may be readily ap lied to existing machines, the two-fold o ject is gained of preserving the smoothness of the printing surface of the platen, and enabling the latter to be adjusted irregularly when desired, and without the necessityof first releasing any clutch or the like.
It will be seen that the tension of the spring 31 and hence the degree of friction produced thereby, may be adjusted by oosening the tangential screw 28 until the wheel 30 and hub 29 may be turned freely upon the threaded sleeve 27, either to increase the tension upon said friction spring or to decrease it; and that thereupon said screw 28 may be tightened, thus making the finger wheel rigid with said sleeve and hence with. the crank 22.
The rim portion 18 of the line space wheel is provide d with a continuous peripheral cam groove 39, into which projects a stud 39, which is threaded into the shell 15, the latter being rigid with the platen, and the stud beprovidcd with an anti-friction roll 39 which ts the groove. By means of this construction, the platen is slowly reciprocate d endwise during its successive rotations, the endwise movements depending upon the relative rotary movements between the piaten and the line space wheel. The latter is laterally motionless, and it will be observed that the pinion 20 is widened, so as to remain always in mesh with the platen gear 14 during its lateral movements. Thus the platen is caused to creep both circumferentially and endwise, so that every spot upon its working surface is evenly subjected to the blows of the types, whereby the type impressions are prevented from sinking deeper at succc ssive revolutions of the platen.
It will be observed that the train of gear wheels 17, 21, 20, 1 1 enables the line space wheel 16 to rotate the platen 1 at a different rate of speed, or in other words, differentiates the movement of the platen from that of the line space wheel; that the normally stationary sleeve or supporting device 23, 26 is mounted upon the platen frame and projects inwardly therefrom, extending through the line space wheel and in line with the platen axis to a point between the line space wheel and platen, at which point the double pinion 20, 21 is mounted upon the arm 22 thereon; that said train of go ar wheels is arranged interiorly of the platen body, being confined within an inclosure consisting of a housing or drum, whereof one side consists of the line space wheel and the other side consists of the platen structure, the latter forming the periphery of the housing, and the rim 18 of the line space wheel telescoping within the platen; that the line space wheel closes one end of the hollow platen body; that said gears 1 1-17 are arranged side by side at the platenside of the line space wheel, the gear 17 being disposed between the platen gear 1 1 and the line space wheel; that the line space wheel is mounted upon the supporting sleeve 23 between the arm 22 and the end bar 10 of the platen frame that the double pinion 20, 21 turns upon a stationary axis 38 which. is eccentric to the platen axis 8; that the line space wheel 16 has a set of coarse teeth upon 7 its periphery, and an internal set of fine teeth; that the gears 14-17 have approximately equal diameters, the diameter oi the platen being greater than that of either gear and approximating that of the line space wheel; and that the platen axle S is supported in and projects through the pinion-supporting device 23, 26, and carries at its outer end the finger wheel 13. It will also be seen that the finger wheel is fixed upon the cylindrical support or sleeve 26, and thereby controls the double pinion. 20, 21, so that upon turning the linger wheel, a movement of the platen is effected relatively to or independently ol' the line space wheel; and that during the movement of said finger piece and said sleeve about the platen axis, said double pinion has a planetary moven'ient, that is, an orbital revolution about the platen axis, while also rotatii'ig upon its own aXis; that the devices which operate automatically for varying the lines of impression upon the platen are thus also manually adjustable, for making fine adjustments of the platen and the paper thereon, both oi these objects be ingefiectcd by different operations of one set or train of gearing; that during the adjustment of the platen, the member 17 of said train remains stationary, being under the control of the line space check 37 that means, as the brake 31, are provided for maintaining the axis 38 of the double pinion. 21, 22 stationary during the ordinary operation oi the line space wheel and platen; and that the finger wheel 30 revolves the said double pinion bodily about the platen axis. It will also be seen that means are arranged interiorly ol' the platen body for e'fl'ccting automatic endwise reciprocations oi the platen.
Refer ing now to Figs. 9 to 21 inclusive, it will be seen that in this form of the invention a single wide pinion 40, having eighteen teeth, is journaled upon an eccentric 41, provided upon the end oi a sleeve 42, to which is secured by a set screw 4 the hub of a finger wheel 30. The eccentric, whose function corresponds with that ol' the crank 22 at Fig. 3, is provided with a flange 44 and the pinion is confined between said flange and a flange 45 formed upon a collar 46 mounted upon the sleeve 42. At its opposite side or end the collar abuts against a washer 47 which is placed against the inner side of the platen frame, and is also reduced at 46 to form a bearing for a series of bearing rollers 24 supporting the line space wheel, and confined between the washer 47 and the unreduced portion. of the collar 46. A split 'l'riction Washer 48 is inserted between the inner end of the hub of wheel 3O and the outer side of the platen frame, whereby accidental rotary movements of the eccentric 41 are prevented. The internal gear 14 which is attached to the shell 15 by means of screws 49, is provided with twenty-two teeth, while the internal gear 17 which is attached by screws 17 to the edge of the rim portion of the line space wheel, is provided with twentyone teeth, so that during its ordinary paperl'eeding movements the velocity of the platen is less than that of the line space wheel to the extent represented by one tooth oi the pin ion 40. Moreover, by rotating the thumb wheel 30 the platen may be irregularly finely adjusted, the eccentric 41 effecting the same planetary movement of the pinion 40 as is given the pinions 20 and 21 by the crank 22. A 'l'riction spring or brake 50 is inserted in a notch 51 (Figs. 12 and 14.) formed in the ri n portion of the line space wheel, whereby accidental rotative movements or back-lash ol' the platen relatively to the line space wheel may prevented, although if the parts are well fitted, this brake may be omitted.
Other variations may be made within the scope of my invention, and portions of my improvements may used without others, as for instance, the brake 31 may be omitted, permitting the double pinion 20:21 to revolve with the platen and line-space wheel, thus retaining the use of the finger wheel 30 for adjusting the platen, but discarding the differentiation of the platen movement from that of the line space wheel; or, if desired, the finger wheel 30 may be omitted, and the sleeve or support 26, 22 made last to the platen l'rame, thus retaining the advantage of differentiating the movement oi the platen from that of the line space wheel but discardthe independent adjustment of the platen; or the cam 39 and stud 41 may either be omitted, or used in connection with other de vices, retaining the advantage of confining said cam and stud within the platen body.
'While I prefer to employ internal gears as illustrated, still spur or other gears may be used for certain features of my improvements.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a line space Wl'lGGl and a platen, of a train of gear wheels arranged interiorly of the platen body and enabling the line space wheel to rotate the platen at a different rate of speed.
2. in a typewriting macl'iine, the combination with a platen frame, a cylindrical platen and a concentric line space wheel, of a device upon said platen frame extending to a point between said line space wheel and said platen, a pinion mounted upon said device, gear wheel connected to said pinion and also to the line space wheel, and a second gear wheel connected to the inion and also to the platen, said pinion and gear wheels differentiating the movement of the platen from that of the line space wheel.
3. in a typewriting machine, the combina tion of a platen frame, a platen, a line space Wheel concentric with and arranged at one end of the latter, and -mechanism carried partly by said line space wheel and operating to differentiate the movement of the platen from the line space wheel; said mechanism being confined within a housing or drum whereof one side consists of the line space wheel and the other side consists of the platen, and one of said line space wheel and platen elements forming at least a portion of the periphery of said housing.
4. In a typewriting machine, the comliination with a platen frame, a platen and a line space wheel at one end of the latter, of a supporting device carried by said platen frame and extending through said line space wheel, a pinion mounted upon said supporting device, a Wheel connected to said pinion and also to the line space wheel, and a wheel also connected to said pinion and to the platen; said wheels and pinion differentiating the movement of the platen from that of the line space wheel.
5. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen frame, a platen and a line space wheel at one end of the latter, of a supporting device carried by said platen frame and extending through said line space Wheel; a pinion mounted upon said supporting device; a wheel connected to said pinion and also to the line space wheel; a wheel also connected to said pinion and to the platen; said wheels and pinion differentiating the movement of the platen from th at of the line space wheel; and a platen axle projecting through said supporting device and carrying at its outer end a finger wheel.
6. In a typewriting machine, the comhination with a platen frame, a platen and a line space wheel, of a supporting device mounted at one end upon-the platen frame and projecting inwardly therefrom in line with the platen axis; a pinion mounted upon said sup orting device; a wheel connected to saic pinion and also to the line space wheel; a WllGGl also connected to said pinion and to the platen said wheels and pinion differentiating the movement of the platen from that of the line space wheel; and a platen shaft mounted at one end in the platen frame and at the other end supported in said inwardly projecting device.
7. in a typewriting machine, the comoination with a platen frame, a platen and a line space wheel, of a supporting device mounted at one end upon the platen frame and projecting inward y therefrom in line with the platen axis; a pinion mounted upon he inner end of said supporting device; a wheel connected to said pinion and also to the line space wheel; a wheel also connected to said pinion and to the platen; said wheels and pinion differentiating the movement of the platen from that of the line space wheel; and. a platen shaft extending at one end throu h the platen frame and carrying a finger wheel at its outer end, and extending at the other end through said inwardly projecting device and also carrying a finger wheel at said other end.
8. ln a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen frame, a hollow cylindrical platen, and a line space wheel closing one end of the platen and concentric therewith, of mechanism arranged within the inclosure formed by the platen and line space wheel for differentiating the movement of the platen from that of the line space wheel; said differentiating mechanism having a stationary connection to the platen frame.
9. In a ty ewriting machine, the combination with a p aten frame, a hollow cylindrical platen, and a line space wheel closing one end of the platen and concentric therewith, of mechanism arranged Within the inclosure formed by the platen and line space wheel and including a wheel turning upon a stationary axis which is eccentric to the platen axis, for differentiating the movement of the platen from that of the line space wheel.
10. In a typewriting machine, the comloi nation with a latch of aline space wheel having interna y arranged teeth, a platen having a gear, and a pinion connected to both said line space teeth and said platen gear and differentiating the movement of the platen from that of the line space wheel.
11. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen of a line space wheel having internally arranged teeth, a platen having an internal gear, and a pinion connected to lzoth said line space teeth and said platen gear and differentiating the movement of the platen from that of the line space wheel.
12. In a typewriting machine, the combi nation with a platen and a line space wheel having two sets of teeth, one of which is internal, of a spring check engaging one of said sets of teeth, a pinion engaging the other of said sets of teeth, and a gear wheel connected to said pinion and also to said platen in such a manner as to differentiate the movement of said platen from that of said line space wheel.
13. In a typcwriting machine, the combination with a platen of a line space wheel having two sets of teeth, whereof the teeth in one set are coarse and in the other set are line, and said set of fine teeth forming an internal gear, means for operating said coarse set of teeth, a pinion engaging said fine set of teeth, and an internal gear connected to said platen and also to said pinion, and differentiatin the movement of the platen from that of the line space wheel.
14:. In a typewriting machine, the combination of two internal gears of i proximately equal diameters; a tocthed' (levice operatively connecting said gears and differentiating their movements; a platen connected to one of said gears, and a line space wheel connected to the other of said gears; the diameter of said platen being greater than the diameter of the gear which is connected thereto.
15. In a typewriting machine, the combi nation of two internal gears of a proximately equal diameters; a toothed evice operatively connecting said gears and differentiating their movements, a platen connected to one of said gears, and a line space wheel connected to the other of said gears; the diameter of said platen being greater than the diameter of said gear which is connected thereto, and said line space wheel having ex ternal or eripheral teeth and being of approximatey the same diameter as the platen.
16. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen and a line space wheel at the end thereof, of two internal gears having unequal numbers of teeth and arranged 7,
side by side, and a rotatory toothed member having a stationary axis and in engagement with both of said internal gears; one of the latter being fast to the platen and the other being fast to the line space wheel.
17. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen and a line space wheel at the end thereof, of two internal gears having unequal numbers of teeth and arranged side by side at the platen side of said line space wheel, and a rotary toothed member having a stationary axis and in engagement with both of said internal gears; one of the latter being fast to the platen and the other being fast to the line space wheel.
18. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a cylindrical platen and a line space wheel concentric therewith, of two internal gears having unequal numbers of teeth, one fast to the platen and the other fast to the line space wheel, and a toothed device rotating upon a stationary axis eccentric to the platen axis and engaging both of said internal gears.
19. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a cylindrical platen and a line space wheel concentric therewith, of two internal gears, one fast to the platen and the other fast to the line space wheel, and a toothed device rotating upon a stationary axis eccentric to the platen axis and engaging both of said internal gears and differentiating the rotary movement of said platen from that of said line space wheel.
20. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a line space wheel and a cylindrical platen of a train of gearing arranged interiorly of the platen body and connecting the platen to said line space wheel and enabling the latter to rotate the platen at a rate of speed different from its own said train of gearing including at least one in ternal gear wheel connected to one of said platen and line-space-wheel elements, a pinion engaging said internal gear wheel, and a gear wheel connected to said pinion and also to the other of said platen and. linespacewheel elements.
21. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a line space wheel and a cylindrical platen of a train of gearing arranged interiorly of the platen body and enabling the line space wheel to rotate the platen at a rate of speed different from its own; said train including a pair of internal gears arranged side by side and a toothed device rotating upon a fixed axis eccentric to the platen axis and engaging both of said internal gears.
22. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a line space wheel and a cylindrical platen of a train of gearing arranged interiorly of the platen body and enabling the line space wheel to rotate the platen at a different rate of speed, said train including a pair of internal gears arranged side by side and having unequal numbers of teeth, and a toothed device rotating upon a fixed axis eccentric to the platen axis and engaging both of said internal gears.
23. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen frame, cylindrical platen and a line space wheel concentric with said platen, of a device upon said platen frame extending to a point between said line space wheel and said platen, a pinion mounted upon said device, an internal gear wheel connected to said pinion and also to the line space wheel, and a second internal gear wheel connected to the pinion and also to the platen, said pinion and gear wheels differentiating the movement of the platen from that of the line space wheel.
24. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen frame, a cylindrical dlaten, and a line space wheel concentric with and arranged at one end of the latter, of mechanism carried partly by said line space wheel and operating to differentiate the movement of the platen from that of the line space wheel; said mechanism being confined within a housing or drum whereof one side consists of the line space wheel and the other side consists of the platen, and one of said line space wheel and platen elements having at least a portion of the periphery of said housing 5 said differentiating mechanism including a pair of internal gear wheels and a i.
single toothed device engaging both thereof, and one of said gear wheels being fast to the platen and the other fast to the line space Wheel.
25. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen frame, a platen and a line space wheel at one end of the latter, of a supporting device carried by said platen frame and extending through said line space wheel; a pinion mounted upon said supporting device; an internal gear wheel connected to said pinion and also to the line space wheel; and an internal gear wheel also connected to said pinion and to the platen; said internal gear wheels and pinion differentiating the movement of the platen from that of the line space wheel.
26. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen of a gear wheel connected thereto; a rotary toothed device engaging said gear wheel; one of said gearwheel and toothed-device elements having greater diameter than and surrounding the other, a companion gear wheel for said gearwheel; said toothed device also engaging said companion gear Wheel; and a line space Wheel connected to said companion gear wheel; said gear Wheels and said toothed device cooperating to differentiate the rotary movement of said platen from that of said line space wheel.
27. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen frame, a platen and line space wheel at one end of the latter, of a supporting device carried by said platen frame and extending through said line space wheel; a pinion mounted upon said supporting device; an internal gear wheel connected to said pinion and also to the line space wheel; and an internal gear wheel also connected to said pinion and to the platen;
said internal gear wheels and pinion differentiating the movement of the platen from that of the line space wheel; and a platen shaft projecting through said supporting device and carrying at its outer end a finger wheel.
28. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen frame, a platen and a line space wheel, of a supporting device mounted at one end unon the platen frame and projecting inwardly therefrom in line with the platen axis; a pinion mounted upon said supporting device; an internal gear wheelconnected to said pinion and also to the line space wheel; an internal gear wheel also connected to said pinion and to the platen, said internal gear wheels and pinion differentiating the movement of the platen from that of the line space wieel; and a platen axle shaft mounted at one end in the platen frame and at the other end supported in said inwardly projecting device.
29. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen frame, a platen and a line space wheel, of a supporting device mounted at one end upon the platen frame and projecting inwardly therefrom, a pinion mounted upon said supporting device; an internal gear wheel connected to said pinion and also to the line space wheel; an internal gear wheel also connected to said pinion and to the platen; said internal gear wheels and pinion differentiating the movement of the platen from that of the line space wheel;
and a platen shaft projecting at one end through the platen frame, and projecting at the other end through said inwardly projecting device, and also carrying at each end a finger wheel.
30. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen frame, a hollow cylindrical platen, a1 d a line space wheel closing one end of the platen, of mechanism arranged within the inclosure formed by the platen and line space wheel for differentiating the movement of the platen from that of the line space wheel; said mechanism including pair of internal gears and a single device rotating upon a stationary axis eccentric to the platen axis and engaging both of said 'nternal gears.
31. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen frame, a platen and a line space wheel, of a pair of internal gear wheels concentric with the platen and line space wheel, a stationary support carried by the platen frame, and a toothed device mounted upon said stationary support to turn upon an axis eccentric to the platen axis,
said toothed device engaging both of said internal gears; one of the latter being fast to the platen and the other thereof being connected to the line space wheel, and one of said internal gears having more teeth than the other thereof.
32. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen frame, a platen and a line space wheel, of a pair of internal gear wheels mounted concentric with the platen and line space wheel; a stationary support carried by the platen frame; and a toothed device mounted upon said stationary support to turn upon an axis eccentric to the platen axis, said toothed device engaging both of said internal gears; one of the latter being fast to the platen and the other thereof ieing connected to the line space wheel; one of said internal gears having more teeth than the other thereof, and said support being mounted at one end upon the platen frame and extending axially of the platen to the interior thereof, and carrying said toothed device upon its inner end.
33. In typewriting machine, the combination with a platen frame, a cylindrical platen and a concentric line space wheel at one end thereof, of an internal gear arranged within the platen and secured thereto; a companion internal gear arranged between the first internal gear and the line space wheel and fast to the latter; a support projecting from said platen frame through said line space wheel, and a toothed device mounted to turn upon said support upon an axis eccentric to said platen and engaging both of said internal gears and causing differential movement of the latter.
34. In a typewriting machine, the combi nation with a platen frame, cylindrical Cir platen and a concentric line space wheel at one end thereof, of an internal gear arranged within the platen and secured thereto; a companion internal gear arranged between the first internal gear and the line space wheel a d fast to the latter; a support projecting from said platen frame through said line space wheel; an arm upon said support; a toothed device mounted. to turn upon said arm eccentrieally to said platen and engaging both of said internal gears and causing differential movement of the latter; and a platen axle mounted at one end upon the platen frame and at the other end upon said internally projecting support.
35. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen frame, a cylindrical platen and a concentric line space wheel at one end thereof, of an internal gear arranged within the platen and secured thereto; a companion internal arranged between the first internal gear and the line space wheel and fast to the latter; a support pro- :ecting from said platen frame through said line space wheel; the latter being ournaled upon said support, and toothed device mounted eccentrically upon said support and engaging both of said internal gears and causing differential movement of the latter.
36. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen frame, a cylindrical platen and a concentric line space wheel at one end thereof, of an internal gear arranged within the platen and secured thereto; a companion internal gear arranged between the first internal gear and the line space wheel and fast to the latter; a cylindrical supporting device projecting from said platen frame through said line space wheel; a toothed device mounted to turn upon said support upon an axis ecentric to said platen and engaging both of said internal gears and causing differential movement of the latter; and bearing rollers interposed between said line space wheel and said supporting device.
37. In a typewriting machine, the combi nation with a platen frame having end' bars, a cylindrical platen, and a concentric line space wheel, of ahollow support or sleeve projecting inwardly from one of said end bars; an arm upon the inner end of said support; a toothed device pivoted upon the end of said arm; a pair of internal gears meshing with said toothed device and differentiated in speed thereby; one of said internal gears being within the platen body and fast thereto, the other thereof being fast to the line space wheel, and the latter being disposed upon said hollow support between said arm and said end bar; a platen axle mounted at one end in the opposite end bar and projecting through said hollow support; and a finger wheel fixed upon the projecting end of said axle.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, a platen axle, and a line space wheel, of a gear connected to the platen, a gear connected to the line space wheel, all of said elements being concentrically arranged and said gears having unequal numbers of teeth; a planet wheel connecting said gears; a device revoluble about the platen axis and carrying said planet wheel, and also provided with a finger wheel; and a finger wheel connected to the platen axle at each end thereof.
39. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a line space wheel and a cylindrical platen, of a train of gear wheels arranged interiorly of the platen body and connecting the platen to said line space wheel; and a finger wheel concentric with the platen axis and connected to one member of said train said line space wheel being disposed between said platen and said finger wheel and the movement of said member by said finger wheel effecting an adjustment of the platen independently of the line space wheel.
40. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a line space wheel and a cylindrical platen, of two gears, one fast to the platen and the other fast to the line space wheel; said gears being concentric with and confined by the line space wheel and platen; a planet wheel connecting said gears; a device carrying said planet wheel and revoluble about the platen axis; and a finger piece mounted upon said device outside of the platen; the movement of said planet wheel by said finger piece causing the platen to rotate relatively to the line space wheel.
41. In typewriting machine, the com bination with a platen frame, a cylindrical platen and a line space wheel concentric with said platen, of a device upon said platen frame extending to a point between said line space wheel and the platen; said device being revoluble about the axis of the platen; a pinion carried by said device; a gear wheel connected to said pinion and also to the line space wheel; a second gear wheel connected to the pinion and also to the platen; and a finger wheel fixed upon said pinion-carrying device; the movement of said pinion by means of said finger wheel effecting a movcment of the platen independently of the line space wheel.
42. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen frame, a platen and a line space wheel at one end of the latter, of a supporting device carried by said platen frame and extending through said line space wheel; said device being revoluble about the platen axis; a pinion mounted upon said supporting device a wheel connected to said pinion and also to the line space wheel; a wheel also connected to said pinion and to the platen; and a finger wheel fixed upon said pinion-carrying device at a point outside of said platen frame; the movement of said pinion by means of said finger wheel efiecting a movement of the platen independently of the line space wheel.
43. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a line space wheel having internally arranged teeth,- a platen having a gear concentric with said line spaci wheel; a planet Wheel connecting said line space Wheel to said gear; and a finger wheel connected to said planet wheel; the movement of the latter effected by said finger wheel causing the platen to rotate while the line space wheel is stationary.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a 'line space wheel having internally arranged teeth; a platen having an internal gear concentric with said line space wheel; a planet wheel connecting said line space wheel to said gear; and a finger wheel connected to said planet wheel; the move 1nent of the latter effected by said finger wheel causing the platen to rotate while the line space wheel is stationary.
45. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, of a line space wheel having two sets of teeth, one of which is internal; a spring check engaging one of said sets of teeth; a pinion engaging the other of said sets of teeth; a gear wheel con nected to said pinion and also to said platen; a revoluble device carrying said pinion; and a finger wheel upon said revoluble device; the movement of said pinion effected by said revoluble device causing the platen to rotate independently of the line space wheel.
46. In a 'typewriting machine, the com bination with a platen of a line space wheel having two sets of teeth, whereof the teeth in one set are coarse and those in the other set are fine, said set of fine teeth forming an internal gear; means for operating said line space wheel; a pinion engaging said fine set of teeth; an internal gear connected to said platen and also to said pinion; and a device carrying said pinion and revoluble concen trically withthe platen for effecting a movement ofthe latter independently of the line space wheel.
47. In a typewriting machine, the com bination with a platen and a line space wheel at the end thereof, of two internal gears having unequal numbers of teeth and arranged side by side; a rotatory toothed member in engagement with both of said internal gears; one of the latter being fast to the platen and the other being fast to the line space Wheel; and a manually revoluble device carrying said toothed member.
48. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen and a line space wheel at the end thereof, of two internal gears having unequal numbers of teeth and arranged side by side at the platen side of said line space wheel; a rotatory toothed member in engagement with both of said internal gears; one of thelatter being fast to the platen and the other being fast to the line space wheel; and a manually revoluble device upon which said toothed member is eccentrically mounted.
49. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a cylindrical platen and a line space wheel concentric therewith, of two internal gears having unequal numbers of teeth, one fast to the platen and the other fast to the line space wheel; a toothed device mounted eccentrically to the platen axis and engaging both of said internal gears, and a device revoluble concentrically with the platen and carrying said toothed device and also provided with a finger piece.
50. In a typewriting machine, the com-' bination with a line space wheel and a cylindrical platen, of a train of gear Wheels ar ranged interiorly of the platen body and connecting the platen to said line space wheel; said train of gear wheels including at least one internal gear wheel connected to one of said platen and line-space-wheel elements, a pinion engaging said internal gear wheel, and a gear wheel connected to said pinion and also to the other of said platen and line-space-Wheel elements; and a device carrying said pinion and revoluble concentrically with said gear wheels, said revoluble device being provided with a finger wheel, and the movement of said pinion effected thereby causing a movement of the platen independently of the line space wheel.
51. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a line space wheel and a cylindrical platen of a train of gear wheels ar ranged interiorly of the platen body; the said train including a pair of internal gears arranged side by side, a toothed device rotating upon an aXis eccentric to the platen axis and engaging both of said internal gears,
wheels; said revoluble device being provided" with a finger wheel, and the movement of said pinion effected thereby causing a movement of the platen independently of the line space wheel.
52. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen frame, a cylindrical platen and a line space wheel concentric with said platen, of a. device upon said platen frame extending to a point between said line space wheel and said platen; a pinion mounted upon said device; an internal gear wheel connected to said vinion and also to the line space wheel; ant a second internal gear wieel connected to the inion and also to the platen; said device eing revoluble concentrically with said platen and being provided with finger wheel, and the movement of said pinion by means of said device effecting a rotation of the platen while the line space wheel remains stationary.
53. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen frame, a platen and a line space wheel, of a pair of internal gear wheels concentric with the platen and line space wheel; a toothed device mounted to turn upon an axis eccentric to the platen axis, said toothed device engaging both of said internal gears; one of the latter being fast to the platen and the other thereof being connected to the line space wheel, and one of said internal gears having more teeth than the other thereof; said support being revolubly mounted at one end upon the platen frame and extending axially of the platen to the interior thereof, and carrying said toothed device upon its inner end, and a finger piece bein mounted upon said support without said p aten frame.
' 54. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen of automatically operating devices for varying the lines of impression upon the platen; said automatically operating devices being also manually adjust able for making fine adjustments of the platen and the paper thereon.
55; In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen and its line space lever of mechanism for turning the platen through an aliquant part of a complete revolution at each actuation of the line space lever; said mechanism including members whereof one may remain stationary while others are moved at will for making fine adjustments of the platen and the paper thereon.
56. In a typewriting machine, the eombination with a platen and a line space wheel having evenly spaced teeth, of means intervening between the line space wheel and the platen for causing the latter to turn through an aliquant portion of a complete revolution while the line space wheel turns through an aliquot portion of a complete revolution; said intervening means being also movable while the line space wheel remains stationary for making fine adjustments of the platen and the paper thereon.
57. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen and a line space wheel, of a train of gearing connecting the line space wheel to the platen; the several members of said train cooperating to differentiate the movement of the platen from that of the line space wheel, and a portion of said train being movable independently of the line space wheel for effecting adjustments of the platen and the paper thereon while the line space wheel remains at rest.
58. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen and a line space wheel, of a check for said line space wheel; and a train of gearing connecting the line space wheel to the platen; the several members of said train cooperating to differentiate the wheel; said toothed connecting device being also operable while the line space wheel remains stationary, for effecting independei'it adjustments of the platen.
60. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen of a line space wheel having a set of teeth, a set of teeth on the platen, and a pinion connected to both of said sets of teeth and differentiating the movement of the platen from that of the line space wheel; said pinion being also movable while the line space wheel remains stationary for making fine adjustments of the platen and the paper thereon.
61. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen and a line space wheel, of a gear connected to the platen; a concentric gear connected to the line space wheel; a pinion or toothed device meshing with said gears and movable independently of said gears about the axis of the latter; means for maintaining the axis of said pinion in a fixed position during the usual movements of the line space wheel and platen; said pinion and gears differentiating the movement of the platen from that of the line space wheel; and means operable at will for revolving said pinion about the axis of said gears.
62. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen frame of a platen mounted thereon; a line space wheel concentric with said platen; and means for both automatically difierentiating the movement of the platen from that ofthe line space wheel and also rotating the platen independently of the line space wheel at will; sald means including both a rotary device mounted upon 1 the platen frame and connected to the line space wheel and to the platen, and a finger piece connected to said rotary device for revolving it bodily about the platen axis.
63. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen frame; a platen, a line space wheel concentric with the platen; a toothed wheel secured to the platen; a companion toothed wheel rigid with the line space wheel; a pinion mounted eccentrically tion device for holding said finger wheel stationary during the usual movements of the line space Wheel and platen; said gears differentiating the movement of the platen from that of the line space wheel, and the construction and arrangement being such that upon turning said finger wheel, a movement of one of said platen and line space .wheel elements is effected relatively to the other.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen and a line space wheel, of a check for said line space wheel; a gear connected to the platen; a gear connected to the line space wheel; a toothed device connecting said gears; and a finger wheel controlling said toothed device; said finger wheel being stationary during the ordinary movement of the line space wheel, and said gears difierentiating the movement of the platen from that of the line space wheel, and the construction and arrangement being such that upon turning said finger wheel, a movement of said platen is efiected while said line space wheel is held stationary by said check.
66. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen; a'line space wheel; a gear wheel connected to the platen; a gear wheel connected to the line space wheel; said gears, line space wheel and platen being concentrically arranged; a planet Wheel connecting said gears; a finger piece connected to said planet wheel for revolving the same about the platen axis, such movement of the planet wheel efiecting a rotary movement of the platen inrjlependently of the line space wheel; and a friction device constantly opposing movement of said planet wheel about the platen axis, whereby the said planet wheel is held against movement aroundthe platen aXis during the movement of the line space wheel.
67 In a typ'ewriting machine, the combination with a platen and a concentric line space wheehoi a train of gearing connecting the line space wheel to the platen; said train including a gear 'rigid'with the platen, a gear rigid with the line space wheel, and a planet wheel connecting said gears; and a device whereon said planet wheelis pivoted, said de vice being revoluble about the platen axis; a finger piece mounted upon said revoluble device; and a friction device which prevents revolution of said device during the ordinary operation of the line space wheel.
68. In a typewriting machine, the combi nation with. a platen of a line space wheel; a pair of gears one connected to the platen and the other to the line space wheel, said gears having slightly different numbers of teeth; a planet wheel connecting said gears; a fmger wheel for operating said planet wheel to cause the platen to rotate independently of the line space Wh eel and a device holding said finger wheel stationary during the ordinary operation of the line space Wheel and platen.
69. In typewriting machine, the combination with a line space wheel and a cylindrical platen, of a train of gear wheels arranged interiorly of the platen body and connecting the platen to said line space Wheel; a fin er Wheel concentric with the platen axis and connected to one in iber of said train; said line space wheel being disposed between said platen and said finger wheel, and the movement of said member by said finger wheel efiecting an adjustment of the platen independently-oi the line space wheel; and a device constantly opposing the revolution of said finger wheel.
70. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen frame, a cylindrical platen and a line space wheel concentric with said platen, of a device upon said platen frame extending to a point between said line space wheel and the platen; said device being revoluble about the axis of the platen; a pinion carried by said device; a gear wheel connected to said pinion and also to the line space wheel; a second gear wheel connected to the pinion and also to the platen; a finger wheel fixed upon said pinion-carrying device; the movement of said pinion by means of said finger wheel eiiecting a movement of the platen independently of the line space wheel; and a brake between said revoluble device and said platen frame.
71. in a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen frame, a platen and a line space wheel at one end of the latter, of a supporting device carried by said platen and extending through said line space wheel, said device being revolublc about the platen axis; a pinion mounted upon said revoluhle device; a wheel connected to said pinionand also to the line soace wheel; a
wheel also connected to said pinion and to the platen; a finger wheel fixed upon said pinion-carrying revoluble device at a point outside of said platen frame; the movement of said pinion caused by said finger wheel eliecting a movement of the platen independently oi the line space wheel; and a friction washer between said platen frame and said finger wheel, for holding the latter stationary during the ordinary moven'ent of the line space wheel and platen.
72. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a line space wheel having internal teeth; aplaten having an internal gear concentric with said line space wheel; a planet wheel connecting said line space wheel to said gear; a finger wheel connected to said planet wheel; the movement of the latter effected by said finger wheel causing the platen to rotate while the line space wheel is stationry; and means for preventing movement of the finger wheel during the ordinary operation of the line space wheel.
73. In a typ'ewriting machine, the combination with a platen and a line space wheel at the end thereof, of two internal gears having unequal numbers of teeth and arranged side by side; a rotatory toothed member in engagement with both of said internal gears; one of the latter being fast to the platen and the other being fast to the line space wheel; a manually revoluble device carrying said toothed member; and means for preventing revolution of said revoluble device during the ordinary operation of the line space wheel.
74. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a line space wheel and a cylindrical platen of a train of gear wheels arranged interiorly of the platen body; said train including a pair of internal gears arranged side by side and a toothed device rotating upon an axis eccentric to the platen axis and engaging both of said internal gears; the latter having unequal numbers of teeth; a device carrying said pinion and revoluble concentrically with said gear wheels; said revoluble device being provided with a finger wheel, and the movement of said pinion effected thereby causing a movement of the platen independently of the line space wheel and means for holdingsaid revoluble device stationary.

In a typewriting machine, the combin ation of a platen frame; aplaten aplaten axle; a sleeve loosely surrounding said platen axle, said sleeve being revolubly mounted in said platen frame; an arm upon said sleeve; a pinion or toothed device carried by said arm companion internal gears meshing with said toothed device, one of said gears being attached to the platen; a line space wheel to which the other of said gears is attached, said line space wheel surrounding said sleeve; and a finger wheel secured upon said sleeve without the platen frame.

In a typewriting machine, the c'ornbination of a platen frame; a platen; a platen axle; a sleeve loosely surrounding said platen axle, said sleeve being revolubly mounted. in said platen frame; a pinion or toothed device carried eccentrically by said sleeve; cornpanion internal gears meshing with said toothed device, one of said gears being attached to the platen, a line space wheel to which the other of said gears is attached; said line space wheel surrounding said sleeve; a finger wheel secured upon said sleeve without the platen frame; a friction device between said platen frame and said sleeve or finger wheel, said gears and toothed device differentiating the movement of the platen from that of the line space wheel; and a finger wheel upon an end of said platen axle which projects through said sleeve.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen frame; a platen; a platen axle; a sleeve loosely surrounding said platen axle, said sleeve being revolubly mounted in said platen frame; a pinion or toothed device carried eccentrically by said sleeve; com panion internal gears meshing with said toothed device; one of said gears being attached to the platen; a line space wheel to which the other gear is attached; said line space wheel surrounding said sleeve; antifriction rolls interposed between said line space wheel and said sleeve; a spring check engaging said line space wheel; and a finger wheel secured upon said sleeve without the platen frame.
78. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen frame; a platen; a platen axle; a sleeve upon said platen axle; said sleeve being revolubly mounted in said platen frame; a pinion or toothed device carried eccentrically by said sleeve; companion internal gears meshing with. said toothed device, one of said gears being attached to the platen; a line space wheel to which the other gear is attached; said line space wheel being loosely mounted upon said sleeve; a finger wheel secured upon said sleeve without the platen frame; a friction washer between said platen frame and said sleeve or finger wheel; and means for adjusting said friction washer.
79. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen frame; a platen; a platen axle, a sleeve upon said platen axle, said sleeve being revolubly mounted in said platen frame; a pinion or toothed device carried eccentrically by said sleeve; companion in ternal gears meshing with said toothed device, one of said gears being attached to the platen; a line space wheel with which the other gear is connected; said line space wheel surrounding said sleeve; said sleeve being threaded at an end thereof which projects from said. platen frame, and said finger wheel being screwed upon said threaded portion; a friction washer between said wheel and said platen frame, the tension of said washer being adjusted by the movement of said wheel along said sleeve; and means for clamping said wheel upon said sleeve.
80. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen; a line space wheel; a gear wheel connected to the platen; a concentric gear wheel connected to the line space wheel, one of said gear wheels having one more tooth than the other; a double pinion; one member of said double pinion having one more tooth than the other member, and one of said members meshing with one of said gears and the other member with the other of said gears; and hand operating means for effecting a planetary movement of said double pinion.
81. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen; a line space wheel; a gear wheel connected to the platen; a concentric gear wheel connected to the line space wheel, one of said gear wheels having one more tooth than the other; a pinion meshing with said gears; means for supporting said pinion; means for turning said support upon the axis of said platen; and means for holding said support stationary during the ordinary operation of the line space wheel.
82. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen; a line space wheel; an internal gear wheel connected to the platen; an internal concentric gear wheel connected to the line space wheel; one of said wheels having one more tooth than the other; a double pinion one of whose sets of teeth meshes with one of said gears and the other whereof meshes with the other of said gears; and means for supporting said double pinion.
83. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a line space wheel; a gear connected to the platen; a gear connected to the line space wheel; one of said gears having more teeth and being of larger diameter than the other; a double pinion comprising large and small members, the larger member having more teeth than the smaller and meshing with the smaller of said gears; and means for effecting a planetary movement of said double pinion.
84. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen; a line space wheel; an internal gear connected to the platen; an internal gear connected to the line space wheel; one of said gears having more teeth and being of larger diameter than the other; a double pinion comprising large and small members, the larger member having more teeth than the smaller and meshing with the smaller of said gears; and means for effecting a planetary movement of said double pinion about the axis of said internal gears.
85. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a line space wheel and a platen, of a train of gear wheels arranged interiorly of the platen body and enabling the line space wheel to rotate the platen at a different rate of speed, and means also arranged interiorly of the platen body for effecting automatically endwise reciprocations of the platen.
86. .In a typewriting machine, the combi nation with a platen frame, a cylindrical platen and a concentric line space wheel, of a device upon said platen frame extending to a point between said line space wheel and said platen; a pinion mounted upon said device; a gear wheel connected to said pinion and also to the line space wheel; and a second gear wheel connected to the pinion and also to the platen; said pinion and gear wheels differentiating the movement of the platen from that of the line space wheel, and one of said line-space-wheel and platen elements having a cam and the other having a device for engaging said cam, for effect-ing endwise reciprocations of the platen.
87. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen frame, a platen, and a line space wheel at one end of the latter, of a supporting device carried by said platen frame and extending through said line space wheel; a pinion mounted upon said supporting device; a wheel connected to said pinion and also to the line space wheel; and a wheel also connected to said pinion and to the platen; said wheels and pinion differentiating the movement of the platen from that of the line space wheel, and said line space wheel having a rim portion which telescopes the platen, and one of said rim and platen elements having a cam groove and the other having a projection within said groove, for effecting endwise reciprocations of the platen.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen frame; a hollow cylindrical platen; a line spacewheel having a rim portion which projects within the platen; mechanism carried partly by said line space wheel and partly by the platen for differentiating the movement of the platen from that of the line space wheel; a cam upon said rim portion; andv a cooperating projection upon said platen.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen of a line space Wheel having internal teeth; a platen having an internal gear; a pinion connected to both said line space wheel and said platen gear and differentiating the movement of the platen from that of the line space wheel; and means carried partly by the platen for effecting endwise reciprocations of the latter.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a cylindrical platen and a line space wheel concentric therewith, of two internal gears having unequal numbers of teeth, one fast to the platen and the other fast to the line space wheel; a toothed device rotating upon a stationary axis eccentric to the platen axis and engaging both of said internal gears; said line space wheel having a rim portion within said platen; a pcripheral groove upon said rim; and a stud carried by said platen and projecting into said groove.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, and a platen frame, of a line space wheel having a rim portion which telescopes the platen; a cam groove in one of said rim and platen elements; a stud upon the other of said elements; and means for rotating the platen relatively to the line space wheel.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen frame, of a platen; a line space wheel; a platen axle; a finger wheel fixed upon an end of said axle projecting from said frame; a second finger wheel; and a train of gearing connecting said platen to said line space wheel and differentiating the movements of the platen from those of the line space wheel when the latter is actuated for line spacing, and also operable at will by said second finger wheel to rotate the platen independently of the line space wheel.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen frame, of a platen; a line space wheel; a platen axle; a finger wheel fixed upon an end of said axle projecting from said frame; a second finger wheel between said finger wheel and said frame; and a train of gearing connecting said platen to said line space wheel and operable at will by said second finger wheel to rotate the platen independently of the line space wheel; said train of gearing being disposed wholly upon the platen side of said line space wheel.
96. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen frame, a platen and a line space wheel, of a revoluble supporting device mounted at one end upon the platen frame and projecting inwardly therefrom in line with the platen axis; a pinion mounted upon the inner end of said revoluble supporting device; a wheel connected to said pinion and also to the line space wheel; a wheel also connected to said pinion and to the platen; said wheels and pinion differentiating the movement of the platen from that of the line space wheel; a platen shaft extending at one end through the platen frame and carrying a finger wheel at its outer end, and extending at the other end through said revoluble supporting device and also carrying a finger Wheel at said other end; a finger wheel fixed upon said revoluble supporting device; and a friction device between said revoluble supporting device and said platen frame.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen and a line space wheel of a single train of gears connecting the platen to the line space wheel and operable in one way for differentiating the movement of the platen from that of the line space wheel; and also operable in a different way for effecting movements of the platen independently of the line space wheel.
98. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen; aline s )ace ratchet-wheel means for turning the latter; an internal toothed member fixed to the platen, an in.- ternal toothed member fixed to the ratchetwheel; and means in engagement with both internal toothed members, to differentiate the rotation of the platen by the normal rotation of the ratchet-wheel.
99. In a typewriting machine, the combi nation of a platen; a line space ratchet-wheel; a line-spacing pawl; an internal gear fixed to the platen; an internal gear fixed to the ratchet-wheel; and a toothed pinion in en gagement with the teeth of both internal gears, to differentiate the rotation of the platen to the normal rotation of the ratchetwhecl by the linespacing pawl.
100. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen; a line space ratchet-wheel a line-spacing pawl; an internal gear fixed to the platen; an internal gear fixed to the ratchet-wheel; and a pinion rotating on a stationary axis, in engagement with both said gears, to differentiate the rotation of the platen to the normal rotation of the ratchetwheel by the line-spacing pawl.

In a typewriting machine, the combination. of a platen; a line space ratchet-wheel; means for turning the latter; two differential gears connecting the platen to the ratchetwheel; a pinion to eo-act with both ears, means to hold said pinion stationary reIative to the platen axis, and means for turning said pinion to effect a rotation of the platen while the line spacing wheel remains at rest.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen; a line space ratchetwheel; a spring-pressed detent; an internal gear fixed to the platen, an internal gear fixed to the ratchet-Wheel; a pinion in operative engagement with both gears; and means to rotate said pinion Within said gears to rotate the platen independently of the ratchet-wheel and While the ratchet-Wheel is at rest.
108. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a line space ratchettion between the platen and line spacing wheel at each line spacing operation, said devices being also manually adjustable for making fine adjustments of the platen while the line spacing wheel remains at rest.
110. .In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a line spacing wheel, a line spacin lever, mechanism for turning the platen through an aliquant part of a complete revolution at each actuation of the line space lever, said mechanism including 5' members whereof one may remain stationary while the others are moved at will for making fine adjust: rents of the platen and the paper thereon while the line spacing wheel remains at rest.
