Description

oNiTEn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS M. CROSSLEY, OF BEDFORD, MICHIGAN.
SWITGH-TONGUE-HOLDING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patnted Nov. 30, 1920.
Application led July 2,` 1920. -Serial No. 363,516.
residing at Redford, in the county of Wayne invented certain. new and useful Improvements in SwitclrTongue-Holdin Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawinos.
In my pending application Ser. No. 326,548, filed Sept. 26, 1919, there is disclosed a novel retaining member or spring construction by which a switch point or tongue may be positively held in an adjusted position, either with the switch point closed or opened, and since there is no intermediate and State of Michigan have j position for the switch point, derailments inactive so that it will constitute lockin means for a switch point or tongue.V fit my installation it will therefore bepossible to lock a switch point in a set position with `no danger of the switch point becoming accidentally displaced by rolling stock con tacting with the same. o
This invention also includes locking means and yieldable means for the arms `that may be set to hold the arms against movement.
The mechanical construction entering ijito my invention also permits of a two-way snap switch point being converted into a Oneway snap switch point, and the construcj tion by which this and other features are attained will be hereinafter described and then claimed. j
Reference will now-be had to the drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a plan of an electricrailway switch provided with a switch tongue holding device in accordance with my invention y Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of a portion `of the switch mate showing the spring housing in plan with the cover thereof removed;
Fig.` 3 is a cross sectional view of the same with the cover in lace;
Fig. 4 `is a simi ar view showing the arrangement for `a one-way snap switch tongue; y
Fig. 5 is a similar view illustrating a modification of the arrangement shown in Fig. 4; o
li`ig6 is a perspective view of a detached shim or spacer member, and
j Fig. 7 is a plan ofa housing containing a modified form of tongue holding device.`
In the drawing, the reference numerall denotes a conventional form of switch mate having a pivoted switch tongue 2 and the switch mate 1 is slotted, as at 3, and rovided with a chamber 4 for the depen ing lug 5 ,of the switch tongue 2, The side of the tongue 2 has an opening 6 communicating with the chamber 4. 'and Jroviding clear-` ance for a rod or slide bari? nected to the lug 5 and provided with nuts 8, spacing sleeves 9 and a double conical shaped head 10, the head 10 being interposed between the confronting ends of the sleeves Q. and allvof the elements held assembled on the rod 7 and fixed relative to the lug 5 by the nuts 8 on the ends of said rod.
Connected to the side of the switch mate 1, by screw bolts 11 or other fastening means, is a rectangular housing l2 having a countersunk detachable cover 13. In the housing 12, adjacent the outer wall thereof, is a vertical partition 14:` having angularly disposedend portions 15 and the partition has its upper edge provided with slots 16. In one of the` slots 16 -is mounted a bolt 17 having a shimor spacer member 18 and a nut`19 for holding a one piece spring or resilient retaining member 20. The shim, or spacer member has a concave face pro vid nga seat for the spring 20 and said shim or spacer member is slotted, as at 2l, so that it may be shifted down over the bolt 17 and clamped between the spring 20 and the partition" 14 by tightening the `nut 19 -of the bolt 17.` Since the shim or spacer member 1S can be easily removed it is possible to substitute other shims for that one shown to ive-position the spring on the bolt 17.
which is conksal arms for reglfllating the outward movement thereof.
2. Means as eharaeterlzed 1n clalm 1,
wherein said arms maybe locked against separation hy means supported independent ot said arms. f
3. Switch tongue holdin@ means comprising a head movable with the switch tongue opposed means engaging said head an adapted to yield to 'ermt said head to 10 move, and means for ocking sadfopposed v means against any yielding movement.
In testimony whereof I aix my signatme in the presence of two Witnesses.
