UNI'rEn V:DATES ATENT @Felon IMPROVEMENT IN COAL-SCUTTLES.
Specification forming'prt of Letters Patent No. 135,554, dated February 4, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GARDNER Heumann, of Brunswick, in the county ot' Rensselaer, New York, have invented aI new and usel'ul Coal-Scuttle, of which the folowing is a specification: i
Nature and Objects of the Invention.
My invention, although especially designed forcoal-scuttlesor buckets, is capable, by slight moditications, of beingapplied to various uses, such as cooks hitter-buckets, milk-buckets, and even slop-pails.
ln the accompanying drawing, which represents my invention as adapted to the purpows of a coalbucket, Figure l is a. perspective view ot the scuttle in condition t'or heilig' tilled.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view ofthe same in the act of being carried. Fig. 3 is a vertical section ot' the scuttleas seen in the act of discharging a part of its contents.
rlhe body A of the scuttle is supported on a customary foot-flange, B, and has projecting from its rear a customary tipping-handle, C.
It also i'lares upward, and that portion back ot' or ld F of the represented nearly parabolic crowning t'orm, so as to present a concave surface to the contents of the scuttle, and to afford, in conjunction with the spout E, a wide but shallow discharge-aperture, capalhle'of being enlarged by lifting ot' the lid. The said lid F is at. its rear edge hinged to the forward edge ot' the sloping cover D, and near to this rear edge is provided with a fixed handle, Il, by which the lid F may be opened land supported in the open sloping position for filling represented in Fig. 1, or be used in place of a bail for carrying' the scuttle, as seen in Fig.2 or be used in conjunction with the tippinghandle (J to cant the scuttle and discharge any desired part ot' its contents; and said discharge may be regulated to any extent by the simple act of elevating or depressing the said lid. 1t will be seen that in the open condition, as represented in Fig. 1, the lid F becomes serviceable asa guard or chute to conduct the coa-l into the scuttle in the act of lling the saine.
Claim.
I claim as new and ot my invention- A pail or scuttle formed with lip E, hinged flap or lid F, and lifting and tipping hanples H and C, the whole heilig formed and arranged substantially as and for the vpurpose described.
