Description

H. C. CLARK.
Goal-Scuttles.
No.134,253. Patenfed Dec.24,1872.
-'UNITED STATES PATENT GFFIGE.
HENRY C. CLARK, OF WILLIAMSBURG, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO WILLIAM CLARK, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN COAL-SCUTTLES.
Specilication forming part of Leiters Patent No. 134,253, dated December 24, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY C. CLARK, of Williamsburg, in the. county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and vuseful Improvement in Coal-Scuttles, of which the following is a specification:
The improvement which I have made consists in a coal-scuttle the spout or front whereof has a swell or curved projection at its junction with the bottom, and, rising therefrom vertically about one-third the depth of the scuttle, terminates in a curved spout. The object is to form a round or oval bottom and rim, with the discharge side made both concave and iiat on its inner side, with a deep outlet to eii'ect the easy discharge of the coal and prevent it from spilling out at the sides, and thus obtain all the advantages of a continuously-curved front.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a view in perspective of a coal-scuttle embracing my improvement, and Fig. 2, a vertical section of the same.
The scuttle may be made of two or more parts, with that portion A of the dischargespout which joins the bottom B made of curved or swelling form to adapt it to a round or oval bottom and hoop, and, rising vertically, terminates in a at bottom, C, curved upward and outward so as to form with the sidesD a deep narrow outlet or mouth, E, rendering it very convenient for inserting it within the opening of a stove and preventing all spilling of the coal. The vertical swelling portion A forms a' concave front on the inner side, which rises and terminates in an arched curve, F, with the flat' part C, thereby combining a concave front with a convex-curved discharging-spout,which not only renders it more easy for the coal toslide out, but admits of the use of a flat-bottom spout with a round or oval bottom, which is more conveniently made and less expensive than a straight-front bottom; the design of my improvement being to obtain a cheap scuttle having a round or oval interior and bottom with a fiat-bottom front and deep dischargingspout, and dispense with the use of `a covered mouth. The outward-swelling base of the front also adds strength both to the bottom and the spout and renders the scuttle more durable than when made with a continuous flat or curved front.
Having described my invention, I claim- The scuttle having its front or discharge side made with an outward bulge or concave lower portion, A, and terminating in a curved front, C, with sides D., and a deep outlet, E, as shQw'n and described.
In testimony whereof I have. hereuntoY set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses this 25th day'of November, A. D.
HENRY C. CLARK. Witnesses:
J. B. WENDELL, WILLIAM CLARK.
