JULIA A. MARTIN, 0F KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE.
COAL HOD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 29, 1922.
Application filed June 26, 1920, Serial No. 392,132,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that JULIA A Mim'rm, a citizen of the United States of Americm residing at Knoxville, in the county of Knox and State of Tennessee, has invented new and useful Improvements in Coal Hods, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a coal hod adapted for general use in conveying fuel to and ashesfrom a stove or like heating device, wherein the escape of dust and ashes while the receptacle is in transit and while depositing ashes therein is prevented, and to avoid the disadvantages of the ordinary coal hods in these operations incident to the care of heating devices located in the living rooms of a dwelling and the like and furthern'iore to provide means whereby the shovel or scoop necessary in connection with removingashes from the stove or heating device or when necessary in applying fuel to the stove, may bereadily carried by the hod so as to be within convenient reach of the operator, and with these objects, in view, the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts, of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is a side view of a coal hod embodying the invention.
Figure 2, is a rear view of the same.
Figure 3, is a front view of the same.
Figure 4, is a detail view of the shovel carrying clip.
In the construction illustrated, the hod 10 which may be of any suitable or preferred form and size is provided with a cover ll either removable or permanently attached as may he desired, the same having at its forward end a lid 12 hinged as at 13 and provided at its free edge with a handle 14: carrying a catch 15 for engagen'ient under the lip at the forward edge of the hod nose 16 as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig ure 1 and in full lines in Figure 3. viously necessary to raise this lid to the open position indicated in Figure 1 in order that coal may be discharged therefrom into the stove or device and also in order the when ashes are removed from the stove by means of a shovel or scoop 17 or the equivalent thereof, may be deposited therein and in order to maintain the lid in this open position a a supporting rod or brace 18 is pivotally mounted as at 19 and is provided at its free end with a fork 20 for engagement with the freeedge of the hod wall. This supporting rod or brace is preferably arranged at one side of the opening and fitted with a movable latch or closure so as to be out of the way of the operator in removing the contents of the hod or in introducing material thereinto.
The'shovel or scoop is provided with a handle or shank 21 fitted with a terminal grip 22 and having at an intermediate point a cross head 23 for engagement with a forked. bracket or clip 24 secured permanently to the rear wall of the hod proper as indicated in Figures 1 and 2.
The usual handle 24 is provided on the rear wall of the hod near the bottom thereof which is preferably provided with support ing feet 25 in lieu of the ordinary dependent band or rim with which such articles are usually provided and the bail 26 which is connected to the side wall of the hod by means of the ears 27 is held in a position ernutting of the grasping of the grip 28 thereof and is limited in its swinging movement by stops 29 and 80 of which the latter prevents the hail from being swung forward and beyond a vertical position and of which the former supports the bail with the grip 28 in the position indicated in dotted lines in Figure 1.
The hod is also preferably provided with a lining 31 of sheet metal or the like between which and the wall of the hod there" is interposed an inner lining 32 of asbestos or like material to the end that the hot ashes or coals deposited therein may not serve to involve a risk to adjacent objects or involve a radiation of heat liable to injure the floor or floor covering upon which the hod may be deposited while ashes are being placed therein.
The invention having been described, what is claimed as new and useful is A coal hod having a cover provided at its forward end with a hinged lid having a latch carrying handle for securing the same in its closed position and a supporting rod pivotally connected with the free edge of the lid and terminally forked to engage the upper edge of the hod wall while maintaining the lid in open position.
In testimony whereof she affixes her signature.
