BURsLAR-rnoor seen-Look.
T 0 (LE whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lori) L. HUUDLESTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burglar- Proof Sash-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in burglar-proof sash locks and my objects are to produce a simple and inexpensive device of this for the purpose of ventilation.
A further object is to provide a device which can be readily applied to the window sashes'without defacing the same any more than is done by inserting a few screws and when applied and in operation will prevent anyone on the outside from opening the access to the interior of the building without breaking the side of the bolt 8 has window glass.
In order that the invention may be fully understood, reference will now be had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of the upper and lower sashes of a window locked together in a partly open position.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line II II of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is. a horizontal section of the sash lock.
Fig. 4 is a vertical cross section of the sash lock.
A, represents the upper sash and B the lower sash of a window frame C. A stile a of the upper sash is provided with a plate 2 secured to said stile by suitable means such as screws 4. The plate 2 is provided with a vertical series of holes 6 to receive the forward end of the bolt 8 of the sash lock 10.
The bolt 8 is reciprocably mounted in a barrel 12, provided at its base with marginal flanges 14 having holes 16 through which screws may pass to secure said barrel 12 to the upper surface of lower sash B. The bolt 10 has a longitudinal recess 16 in one side forming front and rear shoulders 18 and 20, respectively. The recessed a series of rac tee h 2.2

at its upper and lower character whereby the upper and lower sashes of a window may be locked in closed position, or in a partly open position mediate holes indicated on Fig. 3.
for engagement with a portionsv with journals 26, and 28, respectively, which latter exltelnds through the bottom 30 of the barre 2.
while the journal 28 is peened or riveted as indicated at 34 and coacts with the flange 32 in holding the bottom 30 and the barrel 12 together. The flange 32 is surmounted by a knob 36, whereby the pinion 24: may be rotated in one direction to throw the bolt 8' outwardly into one of the holes 6 of the plate 2, or inwardly to move said bolt 8 out of said hole 6.
Before the sash lock is applied to thetop of the sash B, the bolt 8 is prevented from falling out of the barrel 12 by the shoulder 20 contacting the pinion 24, which latter, however, is designed to work with sufiicient friction to prevent accidental rotation thereof and" consequent movement of the bolt 8 either outwardly or inwardly. f
In practice the lock 10 is secured to the top of the sash B in such' position that the bolt 8 mayenter any of the holes-6 of the plate 2 when the sash A is adjusted to bring anyone of said holes 6 in axial alinement with the bolt 8. If it is desired to lock the sashes in closed position, they are adjusted to bring the lowermost hole 6 in position to admit the forward end of the bolt 8, which is shot into said hole by proper manipulation of the knob 36 and the pinion 24. If the sashes are to be locked in a partly open position to admit of ventilation, they are adjusted to bring one of the interor the uppermost hole. 6 in position to admitthe bolt 8.- Whenit is desired to leave the sashes free to open fully, the bolt 8 is drawn backwardly against the rear wall of the barrel 12, as
From the foregoing description, it is ap parent that I have produced a sash lock embodying the advantages above pointed out, and while I have shown and described the preferred form the right to make such changes in the construction, proportion and arrangement of parts as properly fall within the spirit and scope of th c pinion 24 provided 2 .fPatented Sept. 21,19,20 1 Application filed December 19, 1919.'- Serial No. 346,116.
of my invention, I reserve Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: p
In a sash look, a barrel having a separate bottom portion and flanges to rest on top of a window sash to which said flanges may lapping the barrel to coact be secured by suitable means such as screws, a pinion, journals at the ends of said pinion and rotatably mounted in the barrel, a bolt having a longitudinal recess with rack teeth to intermesh with the pinion, a circular shoulder on one of the journals and over with the other journal in holding the pinion in position, a
knob on said circular flange to rotate the 15 In testimony whereof I affix my signature, 20
