Thisfinvention relates'to adevice which isdesigned andV adapted to prevent a person from makingy a wrongful entry after jimmying a'lock on a door or other closure element, and also to frustrate such entry by the use of force and other improper and unlawful methods.
Anobject of the invention is the provision of a device of the indicatedcharacter 'which may be used advantageously in conjunction with a conventional or standardized lock applied to a clo-v sure element such asa'door, without affecting the usual operation of the lock, and requiring onlya simple operation'to employ thedevice for the intended purposesv aforesaid.
With the foregoing andcther objects in View the invention resides in the combination, construction and functions of the parts hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:

Referring now more particularly to Figs. 1 to inclusive it will be apparent that one form of the device is applied in conjunction with a hinged door, one jamb of the door and an apartment floor in proximity to the door. Only portions of these parts are shown, the door being designated I0, the jamb- II and the floor I 2. A conventional lock I3 is secured to the door and the keeper I4 of the lock is secured to the jamb I I. 'I'he lock I3 is key-operated from the outside of a portion being broken away, anti-jimmying feature of the door and knob-operated from the inside thereof. It is to be understood that any other suitable lock may be used. The device of the present invention is employed in conjunction with a movable part of the lock which functions in the usual locking and unlocking operations. Saidpart I5 is best shown in Fig. 5 and is in the form of a slide which is actuated by key or by the knob I6 to project the bolts Il to locking'position into the keeper I4 and to retract them therefrom to the unlocking position.
The device consists of cooperative keeper members I8, IS-and Zllrespectively and a rigid rod or bar 2|. The members I8 and I9 cooperate to engage and release the upper end of the rod 2| and the member 2l! accommodates the lower end ofV the rod in a manner and for a purpose to'appear. The keeper member I8 is open-sided or has a semi-cylindrical keeper portion 22 and a rod 23 rigidly connected with the portion 22 and extending laterally therefrom, said rod` 23 being secured in a practical manner to the slide I5, the casing of the lock having a hole 24 therein through which the rod 23Y extends. The portion 22 is disposed at all times exteriorly of the `lock casing. The keeper member I9 consists of a plate 25 and abutments 2S and 21 integral with the plate 25,
respectively The abutment 26 consists of portions 28, 29and 30 respectively.`
The portion 23 is `ilat and merges into'the portion 29 which is semi-cylindrical and the portion 29 joins the portion 3E! which in turn joins the plate 25. The portions 28 and 29are spaced from the plate 25 in parallel relation thereto with re-` spect to the vertical axis of the plate 25, where'- as the portion 3Ilis disposed at a-right angle with respect to the plate. The abutment 2'I` has a notch 3| whichregisters with the semi-cylindrical portion 29 and the abutment 2'I is disposed at right angles to the plate and portions 28 and 30. The keeper member I9 thus constructed is open at the left side and the bottom. The member I9 is xedly secured to the door by suitable fastening elements such as the screws 32 which extend through plate 25 and have the heads thereof bearing on the plate. The member I9 is juxtaposed with respect to the member I 8 so that the portion 22 may move inwardly to a position in which it registers with the notch 3l as the bolts I'I of the lock are retracted and outwardly to a position in which it is disposed directly beneath the abutment portion 28 when the bolts I'I of the lock are projected into the keeper I4. The keeper member 20 consists of a socket which is received in a suitable recess in the floor I2, the member being held in place by a screw 33 driven 2 into the iloor. The rod or bar 2| is of suitable length to reach the keeper member IB and the socket member 20 and is bent somewhat as at 314 in order t slant downwardly from the member I8 to the member 2II to eiectually hold the door against unintentional inward movement.
From the -foregoing it will be apparent that when the lock I3 is unlocked, the slide I5 is in retracted position which brings the keeper portion 22 in registry with the notch 3l. The rod 2l then may be put in place by canting it and engaging its upper end with the portion 22. The fnotch 3I permits upward movement of the rod 2| ,to bring the lower end of the latter directly over the socket member ZIJ, after which the rod 2| may be moved downwardly to put the lower y end thereof in the socket member 2&1. The socket member 2l) is large enough to allow the rod 2| to be canted sidewise from the position shown in dot-and-dash lines to the position shown in full lines, and vice versa, as the slide I5 is being actuated to either lock or unlock the door. When the slide I5 is in the locking position to project the bolts I1, the keeper portion 22 and the upper end of the rod 2l engaged with the latter will be disposed directly beneath the abutment 21 and opposite the abutment portion Z. The rod 2| will then be locked in a door holding position against displacement by the three members I8, I9 and 2E) under control of the lock I3. If the lock is jimmied it will still be impossible for a person on the outside to swing the door II) inwardly on its hinges 35 to open position. If the lock is unlocked by the use of |a key from the outside, the rod 2| will merely assume the position shown in dot-and-dash lines in Fig. 1 which is also a door-holding position `and it will be impossible still to swing the door inwardly to open position, When the rod 2i is in the position shown in dotand-dash lines its upper end will encounter the abutment portion 29 in 'an attempt to open the door from the outside, while the door is unlocked. The rod 2l in this position may be removed by first moving the same upwardly through the notch 3i until the lower end of lthe rod clears the socket member 2E), `after which the rod may be canted sufficiently and then be fully disengaged to permit the door to be opened and closed at will.
A strip 35 integral with the keeper member I9 or as a separate pant is secured to the door I on the inside thereof. This strip has the end bent into an L-shape portion 31 which is received between the door and the jamb 33 and extends into a recess 33 in the jamb when the door is closed to prevent jimmying or forcing of the door from connection with its hinges 35.
In Figs. 6, 7 and 8 there is shown a modication of the cooperative keeper members for the upper end of the rod 21|. In this form of the invention the lock y4i) is standardized to include a keeper member 4I equivalent to the member I8 in which the member 4I will be integral with or be attached as at 42 to the slide I5. The casing 43 of the lock has a slot 44 'so that the member 4I may extend downwardly from the slide. The casing 43 has a keeper member 45 integral therewith which is the equivalent of the member I9 in that it provides an abutment portion 46 comparable to the portion 219. The casing 43 also serves as an abutment comparable to the abutment 21. In other respects this form of the invention is similar to that shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive and is productive of the same results.
I claim:
1. A locking device including a primary lock having a reciprocable locking bolt, a semi-cylindrical rod-engaging member carried by said bolt, and a xed keeper positioned to cooperate with said member, saidy keeper being open at the bot` tom and having an abutment at the top, a second abutment at the front and an opening in the top abutment, said abutments and the opening being positioned with respect to said member to hold a brace rod from being canted when the locking bolt is in its locking position by -reason of the upper end of said rod being engaged in said member and the top abutment and front abutment being disposed at the to-p and the `side respectively of said upper end, and to release said rod so that it may be removed when said bolt is in its unlocking position by reason of said member being in alinement with said top opening.
2. A locking device comprising a `primary lock having a casing and a reciprocable locking bolt; an open-sided rod-engaging member secured to one end of said bolt and exten-ding through said casing, and a separate -Xed keeper positioned to cooperate with said member, said keeper being open at the bottom and having `a top abutment, a iront abutment an'd an opening in the top abutment, said abutments being cooperatively pcsi-k tioned with respect rto Isaid rod-engaging member to hold a brace-rod in functioning position when the locking bolt is in its locking position by reason of the upper end vof said rod being engaged in said member and the top abutment and front abutment being disposed at the top and the side respectively of said upper end, and to permit said rod to be moved upwardly in said opening and then be canted so that it may be removed when said bolt is in its unlocking position by reason of said member being in aiinement with said top opening.
