Description
B. ALMONTE.
Sash-Fasteners.
N0.15(),216, Patented April 28,1874.
WITNESSES: I INVENTUR fifl 1' BY Q ATTOBNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BERNARD ALMONTE, OF GREAT BARRINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT m SASH-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,216, dated April 28, 1874 application filed March 21, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
H Be it known that I, BERNARD ALMONTE, of Great Barrington, in the county of Berkshire and State of l\. [assachusctts, have invented a new and useful Improvement. in Window-Sash Locks, of which the following; is a specification:
The object of this invention is to provide means for conveniently operating the sashes of windows, sliding doors, &c. The invention consists in the novel method of combining a wheel, stop-bar, finger, connecting-rod, and lever, as hereinafter i'ull y described and pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 is a sectional front view of a window, the sashes of which are provided with my improved lock. Fig. 2 is a view of the lock detached, showing the construction of the same, the covering-plate being removed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the window-frame. 13 represents the sash, and O is the sash-lock. This lock is what is known as a mortise-lock, and is mortised into the frame of the sashes, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. It consists of a casing, D, of metal, to which is attached the stop-wheel E, which is revolved on a central pivot. F is the stop-bar, which turns on the pivot G. H is the finger-lever. I is the till crum-pivot through the head J. On the head J is a hook, K, which engages with the end of the stop-bar F. One end of the lever passes through the flange of the case D, and projects so that it is readily raised with the finger. By raising the lever the stop F is thrown back, so that the wheel E can readily revolve. When the lever is down, as seen in the drawin g, it is held in position by the spring L, and the stop-bar is held in position by the pivoted finger M, which is connected with the lever H as well as when they are in any intermediate position.
The lock has a covering-plate, (not shown in the drawing,) and the wheel E, as well as the finger-lever H, works through an opening in the caseflange, the former to engage with the rack.
This stop-lock seems to solve the question, How can the sashes be securely held in any desired position, and be securely fastened in position when the window is closed? This stop-lock may be applied to other purposes than holding sashes.
I do not, therefore, confine myself to that particular use, but design it for all the purposes for which it may be adapted.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A sash-lock, composed of the wheel E, stopbar F, finger M, connecting-rod N, and fingerlever H, either with or without the spring L, when the same are arranged in a suitably-constructed case, to operate as shown and described.
BERNARD ALMONTE.
