ROAD-GUIDE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented uly 6,1920.
Application filed December 16, 1918. Serial No. 266,871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Enoonus WATTS, a citizen of the United States, res1d1n at Alcester, in the county of Union and tate of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in RoadGuldes, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention comprehends generally improvements in that class of inventions known as card, picture and sign exhibiting and more particularly-relates to an improved road guide.
It is the primary aim and ob'ect of this.
invention to provide a device 0 the above mentioned character designed to be mounted on a main road or trail preferably in advance of a crossroad or bend in the main road to indicate the direction of the main road and in addition carries means indicating the name of the main road and the color symbol of the crossroad, a plurality of the devices being employed to form a road ide or indicating system for roads to in icate clearly and quickly to a traveler the direction of the road.
As an additional and equally important object this invention contemplates the provision of a device of the above mentioned character designed to support indicia indicating the distance from the indicator to the nearest town or city and in addition is capable of supporting symbols or signs indicative of the character of the main products of the farm adjacent which the indicator proper is mounted, serving in effect as an advertisingmedium for the farm.
Among the other aims and objects of this invention may be recited the provision of a device of the above mentioned character wherein the number of parts are compara tively few, the construction simple, the cost of production low and the efficiency high.
iThe improvements in the details and arrangement of parts will be apparent from "1 an inspection of the accompanying drawings, in connection with the specific description hereinafter contained, and wherein the preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed for the purpose of imparting a full understanding of the invention.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a frontelevation of one of the improved indicators,
Fig. 2 is a diagrammatic view of a number;ll of roads showing the devices in position, an
Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are elevational views of symbols adapted to attached to the tail portion of the indicating arrow, as desired.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now, more particularly, to-the accompanying drawings there is provided a main supportin post 1 which may be and preferably is o metalv and has connected vertically of the front face thereof as by suitable fasteners 2 a supporting standard 3. An indicating arrow designated by the numeral 4 is now employed and has its shaft portion 5 secured as b fasteners 6 to the top of the standard 3. his arrow is formed wlth a pointed indicating head 7 at one end of the shaft portion 5 while the tail portion 8 is provided with a plurality of verticallv and horizontally arranged rows of openings 9f or a purpose that will presently appear. It is desired that the arrow 4 be colored for instance, yellow which represents the name of the road or trail while in addition suitable characters such as the letters K and T may be attached by suitable fasteners 10 to the tail portion 8 of the arrow, said fasteners engaging the openings 9, this arran ement indicating the yellow K T trail.
arried transversely of the standard 3 are supporting bars 11 and 12, the former supadditional bracing bar 18 may be detachably arranged between the enlargement on the shaft of the arrow and the adjacent bar 11 for facilitating the supporting of the latter.
Also detachably fastened to the tail portion of the arrow A is a symbol or sign indicative for instance of an apple as at 19 in Fig.1. This apple indicating to the traveler the main product of the farm adjacent which the post 1 is situated and in effect serves as an advertising medium for the farm.
numeral 21 and shown in senting a chicken and designated by the numeral 22 may be detachably fastened to the tail portion of the arrow as is apparent.
As intimated, the tail portion of the arrow 4 carries means for indicating the color sign of the ad'acent crossroad over the main or yellow K trail and in the present instance consists of a diamond point or headed element 23 designed to be detachably fastened as by 'a fastener 24 to the tail portion 8.
In reducing the device to actual practice, it is preferred that aplurality of the indicators be employed to form'a road guide or indicating system for roadways and in this connection attention is particularly directed to the diagrammatic View disclosed by Fig. 2, the horizontally disposedroad or trail representing the yellow K T trail, the arrows 4 being positioned to the right side of and in advance of the crossroad 25, the diamond points being colored red and blueas indicated to designate the color names of the crossroads or trails 25 while the shaft portion of the arrow near the bend 26 in the main road is curved indicating to the traveler of the existence of the curve. Like wise, the branch or crossroad may be designated with indicators of a similar construction but of different colors, that is, the indicating arrow should be colored corresponding to the color name while the diamond points thereon would be colored yellow indicating to the traveler the.fact that these roads are intersected by the yellow main trail.
It is believed in view of the foregoing description that a further description of the operation of the invention is entirely unnecessary. Likewise, it is believed that the advantages of the same will be readily apparent.
Still further embodiments of the invention than those herein especially defined may be resorted to as conditions or preference may dictate, as may be in keeping with the hereto appended claim.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is:
n device of the character describedcomprlslng a standard, a bracket secured to the upper end of said standard, an arrow shaped member secured medially to the upper end of the, bracket, the tail portion of said arrow being provided with a plurality of vertically and horizontally arranged rows of openings, letters disposed on the tail portion and rising vertically above the same, a symbol mounted on the tail portion of the arrow, a plurality of supporting bars secured to the bracket in spaced parallel relation below the arrow, and a plurality of letters carried by the supporting bars and depending therefrom.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature hereto.
