Be it known that l, PAUL RniNoLns, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chattanooga, in the county of Hamilton and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Advertising Devices; and l do hereby declare that the following is a` full, clear, concise, and` exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in advertising devices, having for an object to provide a novel form of rotatable sign adapted to be operated by the wind whereby to cause the advertising matter carried upon the same to move in an orbital path of travel and to successively and clearly display the same, or to move such matter to different positions whereat it will be displayed with the shifting of the wind from the various directions or points of the compass.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a sign with a supporting means adapted to be readily rotated, carrying thereupon a wind-actuated device.
Other objects of the invention will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
In order that the invention and its mode of operation may be readily understood by persons skilled in the art, I have in the accompanying illustrative drawings, and in the detailed following description based thereon, setout one possible embodiment of the same.
In these drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved sign;
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary detail in section showing the anti-frictional mounting of the sign carrying devices upon the support of the device; and,
Figure 3 is a fragmentary detail in perspective showing the manner in which the advertising placards or signs proper are sup ported upon the device.
Having more particular reference to the drawings, in connection with which like characters of reference will designate corresponding parts throughout, the improved device may be stated to comprise a hollow amai no. esame.
supporting column indicated in its entirety by the numeral 1, the lower portion of which is adapted to be embedded or otherwise engaged in earth or other matter receiving and supporting it, as indicated in the Figure 1, while the upper portion thereof is provided with an anti-frictional bearing race way receiving anti-frictional bearings 2 therein, the purpose of which will be presently described.
fi rod, circular in cross section, indicated by the numeral 3, is adapted to have the lower end thereof telescopically engaged in the open upper end of the hollow column 1 in the manner indicated in the Figure 2, and has xedly secured to its lower portion, a bearing collar 4, the lower portion of which. is adapted to be engagedl upon and to ride over the anti-frictional bearing devices 2 arranged within the race way formed in the upper end of the hollow column l, for an obvious purpose. rllhis bearing collar 4 is provided with radially disposed socketed eX- tensions 5 which in turn snugly and immovably receive therein radially disposed supporting rods generally indicated by the numeral 6. Placards comprising suitably shaped pieces of sheet metal, indicated by the numeral 7, are provided the device and have openings formed adjacent the upper marginal portions thereof for receiving the hooked lower ends of fingers 8 therein, the upper portions of said fingers being passed through adjacent portions' of the various radially disposed supporting rods and being suitably secured thereto, as indicated by the numeral 9. Various advertising matter or the like is presented upon one or both sides of the placards 7, either by directly applying such matter to the faces of the placards or by attaching signs, labels, or posters thereto, such as conditions or preference may dictate.
The upper end of the rod 3 extends for a considerable distance above the upper end of the hollow and vertically disposed supporting column 1 and has its upper end equipped with a key fitting l0 supporting the usual form of wind or weather vane 11 therein. with the shifting of the wind, rotary motion will be imparted to the rod 3 and inasmuch as the bearing column 4 is fixed Thus, it will be understood thatk thereto, the placards 7 carried upon the radially disposed arms 6 will loe caused to move in an orbital path of travel and hence, the advertising matter thereupon will loe successively displayed, or if'not this, then the placards Will be moved to different positions Whereat the advertising matter upon each and all of the same will be efiectually displayed.
Of course, it is to be understood that 4the number of radially disposed placard supporting arms 6 may be varied, such as condit-.ions or preference may dictate, and like- Wise, that the lengths of such arms may be varied in order that the length of the placards may be accordingly increased, or if desired, two or more placards maybe arranged upon a single supporting arm 6 as may loe desired. Furthermore, the form of Wind actuated device indicated by the numeral 11 in thev drawings may be varied, under some conditions, if desired.
Manifestly, the construction shown is capable of considerable modification, and such modification as is Within the 'scope of my claim, l consider Within the spirit of my invention.
l claim:
An advertising device comprising a ven tically disposed hollow supporting column having a race Way formed in its upper `end ttor receiving anti-frictional bearing devices, a rod of length greater than the column having its lower 4end telescopically engaged in the open upper end of said column, a loear-v ing collar iXedly secured to the lower portlon of said rod, and seated upon the upper end thereor1 and over the anti-rictional devices, a plurality of radially disposed soclreted extensions formed integral with said collar, a plurality of radially disposed placard supporting rods fixedly engaged with said extensions, placards suspended from said supporting rods, and a Wind actuated means tixedly mounted upon the upper end of the rod.
