Description
UNITED ,STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN S. BROOKS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN C OALHODS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,512, dated July 4, 1876; application tiled February 17, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN S. BROOKS, of No. 809 Sackett street, Brooklyn, in' the county ot' Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful lmprovement in Ooal-Hods, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specitication, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
Figure l is a top view. Fig. 2 is a central section.
My improved coal-hod is made in cylindrical form, with a round concave bottom, A,
which is really a bottom and hoop or rim combined; and the body has perpendicular sides up to about one-half its height, and from that point it is contracted to a suitable size for a mouth, and formed to au elliptical shape, as shown at B, for the double purpose ot' making it narrow at the lip for feeding coal into stove doors or feeders, and wide in the cross direction to facilitate illing the hod with a good sized shovel. rEhe cover O is a cylinder ot the diameter of the lower section and the depth of the upper one, open at its bottom, and provided with a knob or handles to raise it on or off the hod, and when on it rests on lthe flange formed byjoining the two sections of the hod together. It should be decorated in any desired way, as also should the lower section of the hod, each to correspond in finish. The upper section ofthe hod, which is-exposed to the most of the wear and marring bythe ordinary use, should be painted to correspond with the inside, unless galvanized iron or copper is used. The cover is essential to keep the coal from sight, and give l symmetry to the shape.
For the use of cooking-stoves, and when a very plain and cheap article is wanted, the hod may be formed ot' a single piece in the body tapering from the bottom to top. The cover, it any should be required for these, may rest on the floor or ange ofthe bottom.
One ofthe mostimportant points of myinvention is the attachment ofthe handle or bailD to the back side of the hod a nale below the top ofthe upper section.,` so that upon lifting it np to a grate or stove'door the mouth is l bail were attached to the center and the hod kept a perpendicular position.
'lapering hods have been made which are permanently kept in a nearly horizontal position; but they require feet and a separate opening for feeding in or filling, and are not so compact or easily covered.
There is at present a reviving demand for Franklin or open stoves, and with it comes a demand for a coal-hod which may be kept near the lire, and not subject to the objections in looks otl the ordinary hod, nor so inconvenient to obtain supply from as thev coal-vase, which is not made to pour from direct to the lire.
It is believed that this improvement, while being one ot' the very best tunnel-hods for self-feeding stoves, and equally good for cooking-stoves, will ind an extensive use with that class of people Who desire a. neat and moderate -priced article combining beauty with utility.
I claiml. In acoal-hod, thecombinationot'the swinging handle or bail D, located substantially as shown, so that it will incline the hod when it is lifted up thereby, and the tixed handle E for emptying.
2. The cone-shaped top E, having oval mouth B, swinging bail D, so placed that it inclines the hod for emptying when lifted up by it, andthe fixed handle near the bottom, all arranged as shown, and for the purpose specied.
JOHN S. BROOKS.
