Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. PILKING- 'ION, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snap-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in snap fasteners such as com prise a button member and a socket member each adapted to be separately attached to two pieces of fabric and detachably connected for securing the two parts together.
My present invention has for its object to produce a more durable fastener of the above class, than any now upon the market and to design the same so that it can be made .up in various sizes and used for different purposes as for instance upon garments of different sorts as well as bags, canvas and vehicle curtams, further to design the clasp so that the same may be formed from sheet metal stampings ready for quick assembling and attachment to the parts upon which it is to be used.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the'following specification and novel features of this device will be further and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, and upon the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, will be noted similar refer ence characters to indicate the corresponding parts throughout the several figures of which:
Figure 1 shows a perspective view of the two members of my clasp separately attached to a piece of fabric.
Fig. 2 shows a central vertical section through both the button and socket members of the fastener as they would appear attached to the two parts of a garment, and in the act of being disconnected one from the other.
Fig. 3 is a side view of the button member alone.
Fig. 4: represents a bottom View of the button member as shown in Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 shows a detached side View of a small spring employed between the two buttons.
Fig. 6 shows a plan view of the sheet metal blank forming the base in which the buttons are mounted, and
Fig. 7 shows a perspective view of the two parts that form the socket member which engages the buttons.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the buttonmember of the fastener is made up of four pieces while the socket is formed of two pieces,.that are adapted to be applied to the opposite sides of the material to which it is to be attached. hese two members maybe attached in any desired manner. but I have preferably used integral means adapted to be passed through the fabric and bent down upon'the opposite side'to hold them in place. The button member A comprises a sheet metal base that is stamped up to include a central elongated opening 8, prongs 9 and two outwardly disposed tongues 10 which 'arepositioned on the ends and in alinement with the central opening and between the prongs. The'prongs are later bent down at a right angle as shown in Fig. 3 to form fastening means and the tongues are bent in and down upon the base of the buttons to hold them in position.
' I employ two studs or buttons 11 and 12 which are very similar but not exactly alike as will later be explained. Eachof these buttons includes a flanged base 13 whose inner sides are cut away to form the straight sides 14: that fit against each other when the buttons are positioned in the base. Each of the buttons is also provided with a vertical longitudinal groove 15 which alines and registers with that of the other, when the buttons are positioned to receive the small spring 16 that is placed therein and which serves to yieldably hold the upper end portions of the button apart. The tongues 10 are bent over and down upon the bottom end of the buttons and serve to hold the same in position, but permit of a slight yield to the button as is necessary to allow the socket B to slip on and 01f of the head of the button. It will be noted that the buttons 11 and 12 are provided with notches 17 and 18 in their outer sides, which are positioned in alinement with each other, leaving a contracted neck portion around which the socket member is positioned when attached. The notch 17 is provided with a shoulder 19 upon its top side tohold that end of the socket member B as indicated in Fig. 2, while the other notch 18 is not so deep and has a rounded outer faced head portion to permit the socket to slip over when pressure is applied as will also be understood .side.
The socket member B includes an inner plate having a central hole 21 there through with a head 22 formed around the same on the inside. A series of slots 23 is formed through the plate to receive the prongs 24 upon the outer plate 25 which is also provided with a central hole 26 that registers with the hole 21 in the under plate, and the two serve to receive the heads of the buttons when the socket member is attached thereto. In the attachment of the socket member to the fabric one plate is placed upon one side of the fabric and the other plate is placed upon the opposite side in position to have its prongs shoved through the fabric and the slots of the under plate and then bent down as shown in Fig. 1 to form a secure attachment of the parts.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A snap fastener comprising a button member and a socket member, the button member including a base, a pair of buttons mounted in the base and each including a longitudinal groove and neck and head portion, one of the heads having a more pronounced shoulder upon its under side than the other, and a spring positioned in the grooves to yieldably hold the buttons apart.

A snap fastener comprising a button member and a socket member, the button member including a base plate and a pair of buttons each including a flange that is yieldably supported between two portions of the base and having longitudinal grooves, and a spring positioned in the grooves to yieldably hold the buttons apart.
4. A snap fastener comprising a button member and a socket member, the button member including a base plate having a hole therethrough, two buttons positioned in the hole and having flanges seated against the under face of the plate, and means engaging the under side of the flanges to hold them against the plate.
5. A snap fastener comprising a button member and a socket member, the button iember including a base, a pair of buttons yieldably mounted in the base and having longitudinal grooves formed in their adja cent sides, and a spring positioned in the grooves to yieldably hold the buttons apart.
