FILE-HOLDING EvIcE- H Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 15,1919.- Serial No. 277,356.
To all whom, it mag concern:
vBe it known that I, WILLIAM' THOMAS MULLIN, a subject of the King of Great.
My invention relates to improvements in file holding devices, and the object of my invention is to devise a simple and inexpensive means adapted to be placed on the point of a file and provide a smooth grip for the fingers other than the file itself, thus preventing the fingers from the soreness which results from gripping the point of the file by the fingers when much filing has to be done.
I attain this object by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings .in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my device.
Fig. 2 is a perspective View. 7
Fig. 3 is a view illustrating the practical application of the invention.
Similar figures of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views.
1 indicates a jaw member having a slot 2 and a pin extension 3, which extension passes centrally through the shank 4; of a smooth gripping member 5, the pin being riveted over at 6, as shown in Fig. 1, so that the jaw 1 and grip 5 are connected together swivel-fashion. 7 indicates a file and -8 the handle thereof, while 9 indicates a set screw for securing jaw 1 to the file. The slot 2 is made'parallel for flat files, but on one side a .V-shaped slot 10 is provided so that taper files may be held with equal facility. In order to prevent the point of the screw from wearing out through repeated turning on the rough surface of the files, which are much harder than the screw, a plate 11 is fitted loosely in the underside of the upper part of the jaw 1 and normally flush with the same, as shown in Fig. 2', so that the point of the screw will not come in contact 7 member adapted to receive the end of a file opposite the handle end provided with a with the file but'will press the plate down thereon to grip the file, and, to maintain the plate against lateral displacement, its ends are turned upwardly as at 12 and 13.
The manner; in which. the device is used will be readily seen, on referring to Figs. 1 and 3. The point of the file is placed in the jaw slot and the set screw 9 is screwed down on to plate 11 to secure the file in place, after which the point of the file may be guided ,on thework by gripping the smooth part 5,
which, b eing'capa'ble of rotation, enables the file to be moved with great flexibility of action. i
From the foregoing it will be seen thatI have provided a simple device which enables the point of a file to be gripped by the fingers so that finger sorenessegvill not result although a'considerable amount of filing is done. 7
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A file holding device comprising, a member adapted for attachment to the endof a file opposite the handle end provided with a swivel extension forming a smooth finger grip.
2. A file holding device comprising, a jaw swivel extension forming a smooth finger grip, a set screw for securing the jaw member to the file, and a plate interposed between the point of said screw and the file surface.
3. A file holding device comprising, a jaw member adapted to receive the end of a file opposite the handle end provided with a swivel extension forming a smooth finger grip, a set screw for securing the jaw mem ber to the file, and a depressible plate interposed between the point of said screw and the file surface, the ends of said plate being.
upturned whereby its movement laterally 90 is prevented.
Patented Dec. 2, 1919.
