Description
UNITED STATES ATENT FFICE.
ALEXANDER S. HILL, OF BOVINE, SOUTH DAKOTA.
HITCHING-STRAP CLAM P.
gSPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 599,838, dated March 1, 1898.
Application filed October 30, 1897. Serial No. 656,943- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER S. HILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at B0- vine, in the county of Pratt and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hitching-Strap Clamps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a novel form of clamp for securing the free end of a strap or rope; and the object of the invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and durable, as well as strong and effective, device of this class.
To this end the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the device, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings the same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved clamp. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. .Fig. 3 is a top plan view. Fig. 4 is a side elevation.
1 represents the body of the clamp, and it is formed with an integral threaded shank 2, by means of which the clamp proper is permanently secured to a post or other fixture.
3 represents an integral rectangular eye extending horizontally from the opposite end of the body portion, and 4 represents the semicircular face of the body 1, which is also formed with a groove 5, as shown, the curve of course corresponding to the curve of the face 4.
6 represents a transverse semicircular recess formed in the shoulder 7 of the body 1, and 8 represents a rectangular link, the integral cylindrical bar 9 of which is journaled in said recess, so as to permit its opposite parallel bar 10 to travel concentrically across the curved face 4 of the body 1. As shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 4, the link may be raised to a vertical position, which carries its bar 10 away from the face 5, or, as shown in full lines, the link may be thrown forward,
so as to bring the bar 10 in contact with the face 5.
The free end of a strap may beinserted upwardly through the fixed eye 3 and its end then passed through the link 8, so as to pass between the face and the bar 10. Upon attempting to Withdraw the strap the end thereof is firmly clamped between the link and the face 4.
Instead of a strap the end of a-rope or clothes-line may be passed through the eye 3 and laid in the groove 5 and the link dropped down to clamp it in place similar to the strap.
12 12 represent lateral shoulders formed on the sides of the body portion 1, and they serve to support the link when not in use.
Although I have specifically described the construction and relative arrangement of the several elements of my invention, I do not desire to be confined to the same, as such changes or modifications may be made as clearly fall within the scope of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s-
1. A clamp of the class described comprising the body portion provided with the inte gral threaded shank, the integral eye, the curved face and the transverse recess, in combination with the rectangular link pivoted in said transverse recess and having its free end arranged to travel to and from said curved face, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A strap or rope clamp, comprising the body portion 1 formed with the integral threaded shank 2, the rectangular eye 3, the lateral shoulders 12, 12, the curved face 4, the groove 5, formed in said face, and the transverse recess 6, in combination with the rectangular link 8, pivoted at one end in said recess 6, and having its free end arranged to travel to and from said curved face, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afix my A signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALEXANDER S. HILL. Witnesses:
ANTON S. FISCHER,
CHARLES G. Frsonna.
