L. D. YVAN VALKENBURG'.
PEN RETAINER. APPLICVATION FILED-JULY 30,1918.
PatenredSept. 16, 1919.
INVENTDB L VNVALKENBURE TTQBNEY -"UNITED STAT-WENT OFFICE LEVI D. VAN VALKENBURG, 0F HOLYOKE, MASSACHUSETTS.
PEN-RETAINER.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 16, 1919.
v Application led Iluly 30. 1918. Serial No. 247.457.
To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that lt, Lnvi D, VAN VALKEN- BURG, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Holyoke, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful llmprovements in Pen-Retainers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
'llhis invention relates to improvements in pen retainers or clips, and consists particularly in means for anchoring the pen-retain ing device or clip to the pen cap.
@ne of the objects of the invention is the provision of a pen cap for fountain pens with a retainer secured thereto in such manner that the retainer or clip will not slide orA shift in the pen cap, nor be accidentally displaced therefrom, and yet permit of ready detachment from the pen cap when desired. v
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain new and useful combinations, constructions and arrangement of parts clearly described in .the following specilication and fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through a pencap showing the con' struction of the improved retainer.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Fig. '3 is a top plan-view of the retainer detached from the pen cap.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view Yof a modilied form, wherein the' retainer or clip is secured directly to a plug threaded to the barrel of the pen cap. J
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 5 designates the vpen cap which is provided with longitudinal' opening 5 extending through the wall thereof, and the upper end of the cap. The cap 5 is also formed with a transverse slot l6 which intersects said i opening in the cap 5.
"The yretaining bar 7 carries on its lower end, a ball point 8, and 1s provided at its upper end with a lateral ear or anchor flange 9 which is inserted in the transverse slot 6. `A pin 10 s disposed 'in the opening in the wall of the cap 5 and extends across the slot 6 and through an opening 9a formed in the pen cap retaining bar 7 as shown in Fig. 3. 'llhe upper end of the pin 10 is provided with a head .10a which is counter-sunk in the end wall of the pen cap,` so that the pin may be lifted from its socket or opening in said pen cap. The pen cap is also .formed with a transverse opening 11 which registers with the opening in which the pin l0 1s disposed, so that the pin may be displaced by the insertion of a pointed tool or instrument in the opening 11.
By this means the retaining bar 7 is positively anchored to-the pen cap 5 or may be readily detached therefrom by. the with drawal of the pin.
ln Fig. 4 l show a pen cap 12 in which the screw 13 is threaded. The screw 13 is formed on the end plug 14 which butts against the upper end of the pen cap or barrel tube 12. The plug 14 is formed with 'a' transverse slot in which the flange or anchoring ear 15 of the retaining bar 16 is disposed. The retaining bar 16 is retained in said plug slot by means of the pin 16, which is disposed in an opening formed in the plug 14 and which extends across the anchoring ear 15, in the manner described with reference to Figs. 1, 2, 3) By this construction the plug 14 forms a carrier for the retaining bar and said retaining bar may be readily detached from the cap by unthreading'the plug,or may be removed from the plug by withdrawing the pin 16,
The plug 14 maybe formed with'a plain thereto, as shown in Fig". 4.
ll claim:
1. A pen retainer consisting of a cap havi ing a transverse slot in one Iend portion thereof, a retaining bar having a flat terminal portionI snugly fitted in said slot, and means extending across said terminal portion and said slot for holding said terminal portion against movement in said slot.
. 2. A pen retainer consisting of a cap hav in a narrow transverse'slot therein, a retaining bar having a flat terminal portion disposed in angular relation to the body of said bar and inserted snugly insaid slot, said terminal portion having a small holetherein, and a pin disposed longitudinally in said cap and extending through the opening of said terminal portionand across the slot to hold said. retaining bar against movement. t 3. A pen retainer consistino of apen cap having aplug fitted therein, said plug being provided with a transverse opening, a retaining bar having a lateral portion in'- serted in the opening of the plug, a pin disposed in the plug and extending across the Opening to anchor the retaining bar to the plug.
4. In combination, a pen lcap, a plug -fitted therein, said plughaving an opening therein, a retaining bar having a lateral portion inserted in the opening, means for detaohably securing the lateral portion in the opening, said plug forming a carrier for the retaining bar, and removlng the retaining bar from the body of the cap when detached therefrom.
