CAN-OPENER.
Application filed May 10, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAXIM M. BET, a citizen of Russia, residing at lVest Moose Jaw, Province of Saskatchewan, and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Can-Openers,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in combination pocket implements, and has as its special object the provision of a single .handle in which are contained a plurality of useful implements in ,a neat and convenient manner. I
A further ob ect is to provide an imple- .ment of the class described, which is very compact when the parts are folded Within the casing or handle, so that it may be carried in the pocket, or suspended from a chain, thereby occupying but a minimum of space, each of the several implements being those required in daily use.
These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevational view showing a combination tool made in accordance with the invention;

The body 10 of the implement contains a longitudinal through recess 11, terminating in an abutment 12 at one end having a rounded or convex; face 14, while at the other end of the slot is a ledge 15. A fork shank 17 is pivoted on a transverse pin 18 passing through the slot or recess 11, the prongs 19 of the fork being curved as shown in Fig. 2 and are normally maintained with in the casing, between the ledge 15 and the opposite outer side of the body.

sition as shown in the dotted lines in Fig. 5; and a projecting lug 21, is formed with the shank so it may be easily manipulated.
Also pivoted on the pin 18 are the forked ends 23 of a corkscrew 24;, the arrangement being such that when the forked shank 17 is withdrawn and disposed at an angle to the casing 10, the corkscrew-is extended oppositely outward permitting it to be conveniently used.
Extending laterally from the slot 11 is a second recess 25, with which is engaged a knife blade 26, the same being pivoted upon a pin 27, the periphery of which is in register with the convex abutment 1 1, the knife blade resembling that of the ordinary pocket or jack-knife and is furnished with an operating thumb nick 28, which extends together with the back of the blade to a slight distance beyond the edge of the frame.
At the opposite end of the implement is extended an arm 30, adapted to be disposed over the top ofthe jar or bottle while a recessed hook 31 extends laterally outward from the casing, the same being adapted to raise a cap or cover, the edge of which enters the opening 32 in an obvious manner.
A ring clip 35 is engaged in the arm 30, whereby the implement may be suspended if it be so desired. Upon the opposite, outer edge of the arm 30 is a projection 36, and rearward of the opening 32, in the outer side of the body 10, is a recess 38, in which pivoted on the pin 39, set in the body, is the shank 40 of a can-opener, the blade 4.1 of which is formed at a right angle and has a beveled cutter portion 12, which when extended as indicated in Fig. 4 acts cooperatively with the projection 36, so as to sever the top of an ordinary can, whether round or rectangular.
In order to hold the cutter blade rigidly extended, a pair of opposed recesses 44: and 15 are formed in the sides of the cutterblade shank 10, engageable with which is the upper end of a pin 46, held normally outward by a coiled compression spring 47, the spring being contained within a bored opening 48, extending partially through the body 10, one end of the spring being directly engageable with the pin while the other abuts against a fixed plate 19, forced into the opening in a secure manner, so as to cover the same, leaving a smooth surface.
When the can-opener element is not in use, it is folded into the position as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the pin 46 holding it so that the extreme point 50 of the cutter is pressed against one of the edges of the recess 38 preventing it from movement.
When it is desired to use the can-opener, the pin 46 is depressed, forcing the spring at? inwardly and permitting the shank tO to be rotated upon the pin 39 into the position indicated in Fig. 4-, whereupon the pin 46 is projected out due to the pressure of the spring, entering the opening al and holding the cutter blade rigidly extended, where cooperating with the projection 36 it may be used.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a neat and effective device has been presented in which are sustained a number of useful articles, the same being particularly adapted to the wants of soldiers, travelers and the like, when remote from ordinary conveniences.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I In an implement of the character 'described, the combination with a recessed handle body and a projection on its outer eX- tremity, of a cutter blade shank provided with opposed recesses, pivoted on said body, a blade having a beveled cutter portion formed at a right angle to said shank, a pin on said body adapted to be alternately engaged in said recesses of the shank, a coiled compression spring contained within a bore of said handle engaging with one of its ends said pin, and a fixed plate in said bore adapted to be engaged by the other end of said spring, said spring holding said pin projected for preventing rotation of the cutter shank within the recess of said body but allowing a rotation of said shank around its pivot upon the depression of said pin, said pin adapted to engage the opposite recess in said shank after its depression under the action of said spring for holding the cutter shank rigidly extended.
