Be .it known that I, GORDON BROWN, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have inventedcertaih new and useful Improvements in Corkscrews and Bottle-Openers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has reference generally to a combination device of the pocket knife type andmore particularly relates to a cork of which are few, the construction simple,

Cther improvements and novel details in the construction and arrangement of parts will be appreciated from the detailed descriptionbelow which is. to be read in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a parthereof, and wherein I disclose the preferred embodiment of the invention for the purpose of illustration.

Briefly, the invention may be said to consist of a" handle or'holderin which is pivoted a cork screw adapted to engage a cork in the customary manner and with which cooperates a lever which is also pivoted to the handle and adapted for engagement with the upper edge of a bottle after the cork screw has been arranged in position so as toform a support for the handle and thereby permit of an eificient removal of the cork from the bottle when the handle is raised.

Referring now, more particularly, to the accompanying drawings I provide a handle ofa form somewhat similar to the handle of a pocket knife as indicated generally by thenumeral 1. This handle consists ofside sections 2 and 3 which are -=held in spaced .PatentedJuly 16, 1918.

relation with the intermediate section or division plate 4 by means of spring members 5 securable adjacent the inner side edges of the sections bymeans of a suitable fastening device 6. Blocks 7 are formed integral with the adjacent ends ofthe springs 5 and secured in position by means of a suitable fastening-deviceS. A head 9 is formed on theopposite end of oneof the springs 5 for a purpose that will presently appear.

A screw '10 has the inner end terminating in a loop 11 and pivoted through the loop by-means of a suitable fastening device 12 preferably between the sections Qand 4E and adjacent one end thereof. As is apparent the screw can be'folded to lie between'the Side sections 2 and 3 and in a recess 13 formed in theintermediate section 4.

In order to facilitate the application of the screw inacork and to also facilitate the removal 'of-a cork, I have provideda lever lathe inner end of which is pivoted by means of a suitable pin 15 between the sections 3 and a at a point adjacent the head 9. The lever is provided with a recess or notch '16 adjacent its inner end which is adapted for engagement with the head 9 when the lever is swung into a longitudinally extending position from the handle so as to hold the lever in this position and to facilitate the application of the screw to the cork. The outer end of the lever is also provided with a recess or notch 17 which is adapted for engagement with the other edge of the bottle after the screw has been arranged in position to facilitate the extraction of the cork from a bottle. It is to be noted upon reference to Fig. 3 that the recessed or notched end 17 of the lever 14 lies within the limits ofthe recess 13 in the intermediate section so that it may be conveniently removed or rather placed in an adjusted position when desired. The handle is also provided with improved means for removing crimped caps or crowns from bottles, such means in the present instance consisting of a plurality of aliningrecesses or' notches 18 arranged in the sections 2, 3, and 4 as indicated in the drawings.

The mode of operation of the invention may be reviewed as follows:

Assuming thatit is desired to extract a cork from a bottle and the device'is in a closed position as indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the lever 14 is engaged in the recessed end and swung into position longitudinally of the handle and the screw 10 is swung into position at right angles to the handle and inserted in a cork in the bottle in the usual manner, the lever 1 L facilitating this operation as is obvious. When the screw has been applied the lever 14E is new extended at right angles so that the recess 17 may engage the upper edge of the bottle and by exerting an upward movement on the lever the cork will be readily and conveniently removed. It is to be noted that tension of the spring 5 is continually on the inner end of the lever 14: and serves to maintain the said lever in any of its adjusted positions thus preventing accidental displacement of the lever.

From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it can easily be seen that I have provided a device that is simple in construction, containing but a few simple parts that can be cheaply manufactured and assembled and when assembled can be placed upon the mar-.

It will be understood that the above description and accompanying drawings comprehend only the general embodiment of my invention and that various minor changes in detail of construction, proportion and arrangement of the-parts may be made within the scope of the appended claim and without sacrificing any of. the advantages of my invention. 1

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

A cork screw comprising a handle having side sections anda recessed division plate, spring members seem-able between the sections adjacent one of the edges thereof for holding the sections in spaced relation with each other, and forming the back ofthe handle, an upstanding lug formed on the free end of one end of the spring members, a cork engaging screw pivotally secured between one of the side sections and the division plate, a lever pivoted between the plate and the other side section to rotate longitudinally of the handle in a plane parallel to the cork screw, and adapted to be held in a position therebetween at right angles thereto or longitudinally of the handle by means of the lug on the spring member, the lever and cork screw being adapted to lie side by sidewhen folded into the handle, the lever being provided at its inner end with a notch for engaging with the lug when the lever is in the right angle position for limiting the movement thereof, the opposite end of the lever being also provided with a notch adapted to engage with the upper edge of the bottle after the screw has been applied to a cork to facilitate the removal of a cork from a bottle when the handle is raised, said screw, when disposed within the handle, having its helical end positioned in the recess of the division plate, and parallel with the lever, said members and division plate being notched to provide a crown or cap remover, i
