JAMES W. DOWNS, OF BOWDON, GEORGIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,112, dated July 16, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. DOWNS, of Bowdon, in the county of Carroll and in the State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a plow, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing,-in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my plow, from the land-side side. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same with the rear brace broken off. Fig. 3 is a side view of the plow from the side opposite the land-side; and Fig. 4 is a View of the mold-board. I
A represents the plow-beam, to the under side of which is attached a metal bar, B, bent downward at its front end to form the standard O. From the lower end of the standard 0 a curved brace, D, extends upward and joins with the rear end of the bar B, the whole being made of one piece or of two joined together so as to be virtually one. The standard 0 and brace D are further connected by a cross-bar, E, to which the lower ends of the handles G G are attached, said handles being further attached to the rear end of the beam A by means of a round, b, passing through the same. On the rear side of the standard 0 is a projecting hook, a, fitting into a corresponding notch on the land-side H, thus forming a dovetailed joint between the same and the standard. The land-side H is secured to the brace D by means of a bolt and nut, as shown. I represents the plow-share, made of solid steel, and fastened to the standard 0 by a bolt and nut, the bolt passing through a longitudinal slot, 6, in the standard, by which means the share can be lengthened and shortened at Will. On the standard 0, between it and the share I, is placed a plate, j, tapering from one side to the other in thickness so as to make the share inclined sidewise, and suitthrough it also fastens said plate firmly in po-' sition. K represents a mold-board, to be used in place of the share I, said mold-board being provided with a point, f, and holes h h, to be adjusted at any height desired on the standard.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination of the plow-beam A, bar B, standard 0, braces D E, handles G G, dovetailed land-side H, share I, plate J, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 9th day of October, 1871.
JAMES W. DOWNS.
