Patented ec. 3
No. 133,631.v
=Nrrnn Sra'rns 4WIIiLIAllI H. CONAWAY, OF DILLSBOROUGH, INDIANA.
lMPRVEMENT IN PLWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,63l, dated December 3, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, WILLIAM H. GONAWAY, of Dillsborough, in the county of Dearborn and State of Indiana, have invented a certain Reversible Plow, of which the following is a specification Nature cmd Object of the Invention.
This invention relates to that class of hillside-plows which comprise two shares placed, respectively, right and left, back to back, in combination with a swivel-beam capable of being turned around in such a manner as to bring either the right or left share into the operating position, so as'to throw the furrowslice either to the right-hand or left-hand side of the beam, as occasion may require; and particularly to a certain plow of this description furnished with self -adjusting wings to extend the mold-boards so that the two shares may be shortened or closely coupled to reduce the bulk and weight of metal. The invention consists in the said self-adjusting mold-board wings as applied and supported in the manner hereinafter set forth.
Description of the Acconqmnfying Drawing.
Figure l is a perspective view of a plow em' bodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the land-side of the plow, the beam being represented partially in section and the retaining-tongue depressed; Fig. 3 is a plan of the shares detached from the main beam, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the plate to whichthe sheths are attached.
The two shares or members A A are firmly united back to back, and have their landsides united by a stout bar or plate, B. These shares are secured to sheths C C', whose upper ends are attached to a plate, D, having an upwardly-projecting bolt, E, with which said plate is pivoted to the beam F. The
`plate or head D is provided near its ends with position for right or left turning', as the case may be. This tongue is capable of being disengaged from the notch by pressing a handle, J, so as to permit the reversal of the beam and its engagement with the opposite notch. The arrangement of the above-described devices serves to maintain the shares securely in their proper position whenever the operating one is adjusted either to the right or left l hand side of the beam. In order to enable a full and ample mold-board of proper shape and capacity, and without undue length and corresponding weight and bulk of the doubleended share or plow proper, the mold-board of each member A A terminates in a wing or flap, a a', secured to it by hinge b, and in its expanded condition supported by a rest, c.
The ap of whichever member may be used opens out to its full extent by the action of the furrow-slice, the other one simply yielding thereto. A chain, K, connecting together the two wings, prevents the unused wing being pressed too far back; or such limit may be secured by a proper construction of the hinge itself. The rest c supports the wings along nearly their entire length, and in addition to its primary function serves to unite and brace the mold-boards proper in a most efficient manner.
The long bar necessitated by this class of plows gives them great steadiness in the ground, and, although specially designed and intended for use on hill-sides, the plow is well adapted for employment on level land, as it enables the slice to be thrown to the right and left alternately, thus enabling a field to be broken up regularly from one side to the other and the team to be turned on the unbroken ground all the time, the labor of turning the plow at the end of every successive furrow being also obviated. v
The following is claimed as new: The extension-wings a a', hinged directly to the mold-boards of the shares A A', and supported by the combined rest and brace c and stop K, constructed and arranged substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand. WILLIAM H. GONAWAY.
. Witnesses:
GEO. E. KNIGHT, JosIAH RICHARDSON.
