Be it known that I, BURNHAM C. STICK- NEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting-Machines,efwhich the following is a specification.
This invention relates to typewriting machines of the class shown in the Wernery and Smith Patent No. 1,132,055, dated March 16, 1915, in which a longitudinally folded web is fed around the revoluble platen of a typewriting machine, provision being made for straightening out the web to permit the shifting back to new stations of the carbon sheets which are placed between the plies of the web.
Since many plies of web can be used, and since the plies are always connected to one another, and hence their printed forms are always in proper register with one another, the use of a longitudinally folded multipleply web has many advantages; but the field of its usefulness is limited, because the plies are integral with one another, and hence if a fine quality of paper is'used for the outside or face ply, which is intended for sending to the customer, all the remaining plies must be of the same expensive paper, although intended merely for office filing for which cheaper paper would serve as well. Thus, the expense is a serious objection, and moreover the expensive paper is relatively heavy and not suitable for manifolding the desired number of copies. On the other hand, if the web is made of thin inexpensive paper, a large number of copies may be made at one writing, and the paper is suitable for office filing but not suitable to send out to a customer. Moreover, on the customers sheet it is desired sometimes to have a heading, thus making the sheet longer than one of the printed forms which are repeated along the web. The customers sheet may need to have extra length at the top and bottom for headings and other data which is not necessary to be upon the oiiice copies; and the customers copy may need to be of a wider sheet than is necessary for office copies.
()ne of the main objects of the present invention is to make it practicable to make the carbon copies upon a folded web which consists of thin inexpensive paper having relatively short forms printed thereon, while the ink-ribbon copy for the customer may be made upon relatively heavy and expensive paper having a printed heading, and therefore longer than the forms peated along the web, and also to permit the use of a wider sheet for the customers copy as well as to allow an extra bottom margin upon the customers copy.
In carrying out the invention, a longitudinally folded web is introduced into the typewriting machine, to receive the carbon type impressions upon its successive forms, and separate customers sheets are inserted one after another, one corresponding with each of the printed forms that follow one another along the web. The customers sheet may have a printed form to correspond as far as necessary with those upon the web, and it may have .other printed matter and may be of dimensions as dictated by convenience Without regard to the length or width of the forms upon the web or the width of the web itself. 4 I
Each form that is typewritten upon the web is torn off and this is done without injury to the customers sheet, which overlies or faces the web, or to the carbon sheet which lies betweenthe customers'sheet and the web. The customers sheet may be gaged by means of a leading-edge gage to a position where the form thereon will register with the printed forms upon the underlying plies of web.
The knife, which is usually employed for severing the web, may be swung out of the way to permit the customers sheet to be fiapped clear of the machine, whereupon the knife may be restored to position and the web severed, and then the knife may be again swung away while the customers sheet is restored, and then the knife may be swung back to normal position to aid in guiding the work at the delivery side of the platen.
s soon as a page is written, the customers sheet is withdrawn, the webs are straightened out and brought forward to the gage, the carbons are shifted backwardly, including the carbon which serves for the outer ply of the web, a fresh customers sheet is inserted and gaged, the platen is restored to working position, the customers sheet is flapped down, the written form upon the webs is torn off, the customers sheet is restored to its proper position and Smith patent,
the writing of a second page or form proceeds.
The customers sheet is preferably introduced when the webs are in their straightened-out or horizontal position, said sheet being introduced sidewise at the rear of the machine and then thrust forwardly along suitable guides until it is arrested by the leading-edge gage.
The method of arranging, feeding and manipulating the fan-fold web is substantially as set the web entering the machine at the rear and passing forwardly with the plies thereof running between blades, to which are attached forwardly-extending carbons that lie between the plies of the web, said blades mounted upon a carriage which is employed for shifting the carbons backwardly to fresh portions of the web from time to time; said carriage being drawn forwardly step by step at the line-feeding operation, as usual. The webs and carbons pass over a bar and downwardly and forwardly around a platen and up in front of the same, the types striking at the front of the platen, as usual in the Underwood typewriting machine.

be employed, in addition to a plurality of single webs or a fan-fold web 10, a plurality of separate customers sheets 11, one of which may be introduced into the ma chine while the webs are in their straight ened-out condition, as at Fig. 3. The platen 12 is shiftable or displaceable upwardly to enable the webs to assume a substantially straightened-out condition, as at Fig. 3, and at this time the leadingedge of the web 10 may be set up to a gage 13, as will hereinafter appear. The preferred method of introducing the sheet 11 is to insert it sidewise in the machine, the sheet being held horizontally with its leading-edge toward the platen. An opening 14 is provided, preferably at the right-hand side of the machine, for introducing said sheet, said opening occurring between a table 15, over which the sheet 11 is led, and a bar 16, which forms part of the framework 17 of the typewriter carriage mechanism, and also forms one of the side rails along which the carbon carriage 18 is shiftable. This rail 16 forms part of a rear carriage 19, which, at its front end, is connected to the typewriter carriage 17 and at its rear end travels upon a track 20, substantially as in said iVernery and Smith patent; said side rail, however, being in this instance placed at a higher elevation, in order to leave room for the insertion of the sheet. The right-hand edge of the table may be provided with a downwardly and outwardly-flaring portion 21 to serve as an introductory guide for a sheet. At its forward end, the sheet table may incline upwardly to direct the sheet over the top of a paper shelf 22 usually provided at the rear of the main typewriter carriage 17, and inclining downwardly and for-- wardly and curving around the under side of the platen. The sheet 11 is thrust forwardly by the operator over said top of the paper shelf 22, and is guided by a special guiding frame 23 which may extend forwardly and partly beneath the platen, said frame preferably having side guides 24: for the sheet, which may cooperate with a side edge guide 25 at the left-hand edge of the table 15, so that the sheet may be properly guided as it moves forwardly until its leading-edge strikes a gage 26.
Thereupon, the platen 12 is swung downwardly to typing position, as at Fig. 2. and
during said downward swinging movement,
the guiding frame 23 for the separate outside sheet swings downwardly to ineffective position, for which purpose it is pivoted upon a transverse tie-rod 27. which forms part of the framework of the typewriter carriage mechanism. This guiding frame is pressed down against the tension of a weak spring 28. which, at the Fig. 3 position, holds said guiding table in horizontal position up against a stop 29. This guiding memes frame or table may consist of fingers 30, which may lie in depressions or receptacles 31 formed in said downwardly and forwardly-inclined paper-shelf 22 at the rear of the platen, as at Fig. 2.
It will be noted that the outer carbon 32, which is superposed on and cooperates with the outer ply 33 of the fan-fold web 10, is carried upon an extra blade 34 provided at the bottom forward portion of the carbon carriage 18, a guard or support 35 being provided for this extra carbon, said guard or support being in the form of a horizontal table having beaded front and rear edges 36, and being mounted upon the auxiliary carriage 19, and extending between the crossbars thereof and underlying the path of travel of the carbon carriage 18. The guard 35 has beaded front and rear edges 36, so that the special carbon 32 will not be injured in passing thereover. This special sheet of carbon 32 extends forwardly, under the cross tie-rod 27, so as not to be subjected to liability of injury in repeatedly passing forward and backward with its carbon side over said rod. It passes downwardly and forwardly between the web 10 and the customers sheet 11 to the platen and is protected partly by each against liability of injury.
As soon as the operator has swung the platen down to printing position, he swings a knife or blade 37 upon a hinge, which is provided for this purpose, from the effective or cutting full-line position to the inefiective or dotteddine position at Fig. 2, thus leaving a clear space between the knife and the platen to permit the upper or leading portion of the customers sheet 11 to be picked up and pulled forwardly to remove it from the severing point, so that it hangs down to the front of the machine, as at Fig. 4. Thereupon, the knife 37 is swung back against a stop 38 to its normal position, as at Fig. 5, and the first form upon the web 1 is torn off thereby, as at Fig. 6; the distance between-the knife edge and the leading-edge gage 13 of the fan-fold web determining the length ofthe torn-off portion, which is equal to? the length of one of the printed forms upon the web. These and'the following op erations are shown diagrammatically at Figs. 4 to 8. The web is now in position to receive the first line of writing. The operator then again swings the knife clear of the platen and entirely out of the path of the webs and sheet, as at Fig. 7, and then restores the leading portion of the customers sheet to its original position with its top edge against the gage 26, as at Fig. 8', and then restores the knife to normal position where it helps to guide the sheets. Auxiliary rolls 39 preferably mounted by yielding arms or springs 40 upon the knife blade 37- are adapted to bear upon the customers sheet 11 below said knife to aid in feeding the same up around the platen, said rolls preferably bearing at points above the printing point, and, of course, being releasable by merely swinging the knife up to the dotted-line position, as at Fig. 2. A doubleacting spring 41 may be provided to hold the knife in either effective or ineffective position.
- It will thus be seen that the leading-edge of the first form on the web 10 is at this time coincident with the severing edge of the knife, but that the upper portion of the customers sheet 11 extends up far beyond the leading-edge of the web, as at Fig. 8; this extension affording room for a printed headin upon the customers sheet.
t will be seen that the customers sheet 11 being at the outside receives the ink-ribbon type impressions and that all of the type impressions upon the web are madeby the carbons. The typing may proceed line by line until the printed form is completed; whereupon the knife 37 is swung up to the ineffective dotted-line position, so as to release the rolls 39 which run upon the outside sheet; and the usual feed-roll release key 42 (Fig. 2) is also depressed, so as to release the forward and rear rolls 43 which run upon the bottom of the platen or work. This permits the operator to withdraw the customers sheet 11 from the machine. Then the platen is swung up to the Fig. 3 position so as to straighten out the interleaved carbons and webs 10, and the webs are then drawn forwardly to the gage 13 after the retraction of the carbons, and then a new customers sheet 11 is inserted at the side of the machine through the opening 14 and thrust forwardly and gaged at 26. Then the platen 12 is restored to its normal printing position, the upper portion of the customers sheet is withdrawn, the knife 37 is replaced, the plies of the-typewritten portion of the web 10' are severed transversely, the knife is swung up, the upper portion of the customers sheet is restored to position, the knife is swung back again with its rolls 39, the key 42is lifted to restore the lower rolls 43 and the typing of the next page or form proceeds.
It will thus be seen that an outside ribbon copy sheet 11 may be of any desired quality or color, and may have any desired extra printing at the top thereof, and also at the bottom if desired, and may be made wider than the webs 10 if desired, and that the same may be easily and quickly inserted and manipulated preparatory to writing the same conjointly with the web, and then easily removed and replaced without interfering with the usual manipulation of the web and carbons.
To adapt the machine to fan-fold forms and customers sheets of various lengths, the gages 13 and 26 may be made adjustable.
3 mounted thereon.
The knife 37 when in normal or cutting position bears a fixed relation to the writing line, and the gage 13 may be set at different distances from the edge of the knife 37 depending on the length of the printed web form; and the gage 26 may be set at differentdistances from the printing line, for the collation of the sheet with the web forms, so that the first writing line on the customers sheet will be coincident with that on the web forms.
For this purpose, the gage 13 (Figs. 2 and 3) is formed at the lower end of a table 44 having a boss 45 formed thereon into which is threaded a thumb-screw 46, which passes through a slot 47 (Figs. 2 and 3) formed on a paper table 48, which extends across the machine at the delivery side of the platen, and is fast on the swingable platen frame 49 on which the platen 12 is mounted. The boss, thumb-screw and slot, 45, 46 and 47, respectively, are so arranged that the table 44 and its gage 13 will be clamped to the paper table 48 when said screw is tightened, and the gage will be free to be adjusted along the slot 47 when the screw is loosened.
To adjust the gage 26, it is provided with an extension 50, which is also provided with a boss 51 passing through slots 52 and 53 formed in a table 54 and in the table 44, respectively, and has a thumb-screw 55 threaded therethrough, which also passes through the slot 47, whereby the gage 26 may be fastened to the paper table 48.
To prevent the gages 13 and 26 from being displaced laterally, they are each confined by flanges 56 (Fig. 1) engaging the table 54, which is fixed to the table 48.
.To adapt the machine to different widths of customers sheets, the side gage 25 may be made laterally adjustable. For this purpose, the side gage is provided with extensions 57 (Fig. 1) into which are threaded thumb-screws 58, Figs. 1 and 2, passing through laterally'extending slots 59 formed in the table 15. The extensions 57, thumbscrews 58 and slots 59 are soarranged that when the screws are loosened the gage 25 may be adjusted sidewise and may be fastened to the table when said screws are tightened, at a point accordant with the width of the sheet and its collation with the webs. The left-hand guide 24 meeting with the side gage 25 (Fig. 2) is also made adjustable laterally, being slidably mounted on the guide-frame 23. To make the side-guides 24 laterally adjustable, they are provided with collars 60, which encircle cross-rods 61 of the guide-frame 23', and are slidably The collars are provided with set-screws whereby the guides may be fastened to the cross-rods 61.
When the separate sheet and webs are of the same width, the guides 24 may serve for if guiding both said sheet and webs; but when carbon 32 will be said sheet is of greater width than the webs, the guides 24 may be moved apart laterally in accord with the width of said sheet and its collation with the webs, and in this position they will not serve to guide said webs which may be provided with other guiding means at this point, if desired. The frame 23 may be adapted for the guidance of separate sheets of lesser width than the webs, by forming the guides 24 so as to enable them to pass bene'ath the webs to guiding position for said narrower sheet, in which case the special v of a width not exceeding that of the sheet. It will be noted that the frame 23 also serves to hold the webs 10 and the interleaved carbons and the special carbon 32 from sagging at a point beneath the platen, when the parts are in the Fig. 3 position, and also serves to hold said separate sheet in gaged position. It will also be noted that said frame 23 and the paper-"shelf 22 are contiguous with the table 15 and the carbon-support 35.
In order to swing the knife 37 from the full-line position to the dotted-line position, as seen at Fig. 2, there is provided a handle 62, Fig. 1, which forms an extension of the left-handone of a pair of arms 63, one at either side of the machine, between the ends of which is .supported the knife-37. The arms 63 and knife 37 form a bail, which is pivoted at 64 to each side of the swinging frame 49, on which is fast one end of the spring 41, the free end of which bears on a block 65, formed on the right-hand arm 63, said block having cam-faces 66, 67 formed thereon, and so placed relatively to the knife 37 that when the spring bears on the face 66, the knife will be held in effective posi tion. When it is desired to swing the knife to ineffective position, the handle 62 is actuated against the tension of the spring 41 and therewith the bail 37, 63 until the spring 41 bears on the face 67 when the knife will be held in ineffective position and therewith the rolls 39, so that the customers sheet 11 may be ,manipulated.
It will be noted that when the knife handle 62 is actuated, it moves the cam-block 65 to tension the spring 41, until said spring engages one of the cam-faces 66 or 67, after which the knife will be swung to its effective or ineffective position by said spring and held thereby against accidental displacement. It will also be noted that when said spring swin s the knife 37 against the stop 38 to its effective position (Fig. 2). said spring does not engage the entire surface of the cam 66, so that the effective position of the knife will be determined by the stop 33. and. not by the spring and (o-acting ram 66. The spring, when in this position, is suihciently powerful to hold the knife againstdisplacement in a web-severing operation. Said knife-spring 41. is also sufficiently powerful to overcome the feed-rollspringsetO, the latter being sufiiciently powerful so that the feed-rolls 39 thereon may hold the separate sheet 11 and webs against accidental displacement when the usual feed-rolls 43 are cast off. When the feed-rolls 39 are cast off the feed-rolls 43 may be previously thrown on, to hold the webs 10 and the separate sheet 11 against accidental displacement when the leading portion of the sheet is being removed from the severing point or is being replaced thereto.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, I claim: I
1. In a typewriting machine, the combina tion with a rotatable platen, of means for supporting and guiding a plurality of plies of continuousweb to and around said platen, means for supporting a separate sheet, additional means for guiding and supporting said sheet, means for carrying carbon sheets between said continuous Web and said sheet, means for swinging said platen to a position to enable the retraction of said carbon sheets, a leading-edge gage for said continuous web, and a leading-edge gage for said separate sheet, whereby said sheet may be placed in collation with said web.
2. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a rotatable platen, of means for supporting and guiding a plurality of plies of continuous Web to and around said platen, additional means for supporting a separate sheet, means for guiding and sup porting said sheet, means for carrying carbon sheets for said continuous web and said sheet, means for swinging said platen to a position to enable the retraction of said carbon sheets, a leading-edge gage for said continuous web,.a leading-edge gage for said separate sheet, and means for severing a portion of said continuous web.
3. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a rotatable platen, of means for supporting and guiding a plurality of plies oi continuous web to and around said platen, additional means for supporting a. separate sheet, means for giuding and sup porting said sheet. means for carrying carbon sheets for said continuous web and said sheet. means for swinging said platen to a position to enable the retraction of said carbon sheets, a leading-edge gage for said ('(Hltll'lllOlIS web, a leading-edge gage for said separate sheet. means for severing a portion of said continuous web, and means for moving said severing means entirely out of the path of said web and sheet.
i. In a typewriting machine, the combi nation with a rotatable platen, of a paper table, means for supporting and guiding a plurality of plies of continuous web to said table and around said platen, means for supporting a. separate sheet, additional means normally flush with the paper table for guiding and supporting said sheet clear of the paper table, means ,for carrying carbon sheets for said continuous web and said sheet, means for swinging said platen to a positlon to enable the retraction of said carbon sheets, a leading-edge gage for said continuous web, a leading-edge gage for said separate sheet, means for severing a portion of said continuous web, and adapted to be shifted to ineffective position, and means for holding said severing means in effective position.
5. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a rotatable platen, of a paper table, means for supporting and guiding a plurality of plies of continuous web to said table and around said platen, means for supporting a separate sheet, additional means pivoted at the rear end of the paper table and normally flush with the paper table for guiding and supporting said sheet, means for carrying carbon sheets for said continuous web and said sheet, means for swinging said platen to a position to enable the retraction of said carbon sheets, a spring for simultaneously causing said additional means to lift the separate sheet, a leadingedge gage for said continuous web, a leading-edge gage for said separate sheet, means for severing a portion of said continuous web, means for holding said severing means in efiective position, and means for holding said severing means in ineffective position.
6. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a rotatable platen, of means for supporting and guiding a plurality of plies of continuous web to and around said platen, means for supporting a separate sheet, additional means for guiding and supporting said sheet, means for carrying carbon sheets for said continuous web and said sheet, means for swinging said platen to acposition to enable the retraction of said carbon sheets, a leading-edge gage for said continuous web, a leading-edge gage for said separate sheet, means for severing a portion of said continuous web. and means for holding said severing means in effective and in ineffective positions.
7. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a rotatable platen, of means for supporting and guiding plurality of plies of continuous web to and around the platen, comprising edge gages. means for support ing and guiding a separate sheet of a width other than said continuous web, comprising separately adjustable edge gages, means for carrying carbon sheets interleaved between the plies of said web and said sheet, means for swinging said platen so that said carbon sheets may be retracted, an end gage for said continuous web, and an end gage for said separate sheet, whereby said sheet may be placed in collation with said web.
8. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a rotatable platen and a carriage therefor, of means for supporting and guiding a plurality of plies of continuous web to and around said platen, means for supporting and guiding a separate sheet, additional means for supporting andguiding said sheet, means for carrying interleaved carbon sheets for said continuous web and said sheet, a
platen frame for swinging said platen relatively to said carriage to a position to enable the retraction of said carbon sheets, means for severing said web only, said severing means being swingable relatively to said platen frame to clear the path of said web and sheet and to permit the removal of said sheet therefrom, a leading-edge gage for said continuous web, and a leading-edge gage for said separate sheet for placing said sheet relatively to said web.
9. The combination with a swing frame including a platen, of means for conducting a web and a sheet to and around said platen when in normal position, a gage on said frame to which said web is adapted to be advanced when the frame is swung up, means on said swing frame for severing said web, and means for moving said severing means to a position nearer the gage to en- 'able the sheet to be withdrawn from the path of said web.
10. The combination with a swing frame including a platen, of means for conducting a web and a sheet to and around said platen when in normal position, a gage on said frame to which said web is adapted to be advanced when the frame is swung up, means on said swing frame for severing said web, means for holding said severing means in effective position, and means for moving said severing means against the action of said holding means to a position nearer the gage to enable the sheet to be withdrawn from the path of said web.
11. The combination with a swing frame including a platen, of means for conducting a web and a sheet to and around said platen when in normal position, a gage on said frame to which said web is adapted to be advanced when the frame is swung up, means on said swing frame for severing said web, means for moving said severing means to a position nearer the gage to enable the sheet to be withdrawnfrom the path of said web, feed-rolls connected to the severing means, and means for holding said severing means and feed-rolls in effective and ineffective positions.
12. The combination with a swing frame including a platen, of means for conducting a web and a sheet to and around said platen when in normal position, a gage on said frame to which said web is adapted to be advanced when the frame is swung up, means on said swing frame for severing said web, means for moving said severing means to a position nearer the gage to enable the sheet to be drawn from the path of said web, spring mounted feed-rolls upon the severing means, and a single means for holding said severing means and feed-rolls in the several positions against accidental displacement.
13. Tn a typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen, of means for conducting a web to and around said platen, a'knife for severing portions of the web, pivotally mounted arms for supporting said knife, said knife and said arms constituting a frame, astop to be engaged by said frame when the knife is moved to effective position, feed-rolls to cooperate with said platen. spring means for supporting said feed-rolls on said frame, so that the feed-rolls will press against said platen before the knife is brought to effective position and means, including a spring, effective when the frame is swung away from said platen to COmplete such movement and effective when the frame is moved in the opposite direction to overcome the spring means pressing the feedrolls against the platen and to press said frame against said stop.
l LThe combination with a platen, of a knife. for cutting webs fed around said platen, "pivoted arms for supporting said knife, said knife and' said arms constituting a .frame, a hub on one of said arms having flat surfaces on its periphery, a leaf-spring pressing against said hub, and effective when said hub is turned sufficiently in one direction or the other to cooperate with one of said flat surfaces and urge the frame toward a position such that the spring will lie flat against said flat surfaces, feed-rolls to engage said platen, spring arms to carry said feed-rolls mounted on said frame, so that said feed-rolls will engage the platen before the knife reaches its effective position, the spring arms being of such strength as to be overcome by said leaf-spring when the latter is urging the knife to effective position, and a stop to check the movement of said frame before the corresponding flat surfaces on said hub have been turned sufficiently to enable the leaf-spring to lie flat thermigaiust. whereby. the leaf-spring will be effective to yieldingly hold said frame against said stop.
15. The combination with a rotatable platen and a swingable frame therefor, of means for conducting a web to and around the platen, a knife for cutting printed portions from the web, arms pivotally mounted on the platen frame and swing able thereon for supporting said knife. and a cam for throwing the knife to and from cutting position, said cam having face formed thereon to determine the several positions of the knife.

The combination with a rotatable platen and r'a'swingable frame therefor, of means for conducting a web to and around the platen,.a knife for cutting portions from the web, arms pivotally mounted on the platen frame and swingable. therewith for supporting said knife, and a handle and cam for throwing the knife to and from cutting position, said cam having faces thereon to determine the several positions of the knife. r t

a carbon-carrier on said carriage mechanism for holding interleaved carbon sheets between said continuous webs and said sheet, a frame for swinging said platen relatively to said carriage mechanism to a position to enable the retraction of said carbon sheets, a leadingedge gage for said continuous webs, and a leading-edge gage for said separate sheet, whereby said sheet may be placed in collation with said webs.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a rotatable platen and a carriage mechanism, of a carboncarrier mounted on said carriage mechanism for'retracting a carbon, means over which a continuous web is guided from the carbon-carrier to and under the platen, a table upon said carriage mechanism 'beneathsaid carbon-carrier, for supporting and guiding a separate sheet to and under the platen, said platen being swingable to permit the web and sheet to be straightened sufiiciently to permit the retraction of the carbon therealong, and to permit the advancement of the separate sheet to and under the platen, and means contiguous with said table for supporting and guiding the web and said carriage mechanism, of a carbon-carrier mounted on said carriage mechanism for retracting acarbon, means over which a continuous web and said carbon are guided from the carboncarrier to and under the platen, a table upon said carriage mechanism beneath said carbon-carrier, for supporting and guiding a separate sheet to and under the platen, said platen being swingable to permit the web and sheet to be straightened sutiiciently to permit the retraction of the carbon therealong, and to permit the advancement of the separate sheet to and under the platen, and means contiguous with said table for supporting said carbon and said sheet.
31. lln a typewritiiig machine, the combination with a rotatable platen, of means for supporting and guiding superposed webs to and around the platen, means for supporta ing and advancing a separate sheet to and around the platen, means for" holding carbons upon said webs and sheet, feed-rolls to run upon the (under side of the platen, a severingknife to-which said webs may be gaged, releasable auxiliary feed-rolls on said knife for pressing the superposed webs lightly against the platen at the delivery side thereof, and a leadingedge gage for said separate sheet, said platen being swingable and said auxiliary feed-rolls being releasable to adord clearance to permit said webs to be straightened-sufficiently to permit the retraction of the carbons therealong, and to permit the advancement and removal of said separate sheet.
32. in a typewriting machine,t he combination with a rotatable platen, ofmeans for supporting and guiding superposed" webs to and around the platen, means for supporting and advancing a separate sheet to and around the platen, means for holding carbons between said Webs and sheet, releasable feed-rolls to run upon the under side of the platen, a swingable web-severing knife to which said webs may be gaged, auxiliary feed-rolls on said knife and swingable therewith for pressing the superposed webs and sheet lightly against the platen at the delivery side thereof, and a leading-edge gage for said separate sheet, said platen and said auxiliary, feed-rolls being swingable to afford clearance to permit said webs to be straightened sufficiently to permit the retraction of the carbons therealong, and to permit the advancement and removal of said separate sheet 33. The combination with a platen, of means for conducting a web to and around said platen, a gage to which said web is advanced, means normally effective for severing said web, means for moving said severing means to ineffective position to clear the path of said web, means for holding said severing means in ineffective position, feedrolls at the delivery side of the platen, and resilient means connecting said feed-rolls to said severing means for pressing the web against the platen, said first-named holding means being adapted to overcome said resilient means.

The combination with a platen, of means for conducting a web to and around said platen, a gage to which said web may be advanced, means normally effective for severing said web, a spring for holding said severing means in effective position, means for moving said severing means to ineffective position to clear the path of said web, feed-rolls at the (lelivery'side of the platen movable with, said severing means, and springs connectingsaid feed-rolls to said severing means for pressing the web against the platen, saidfirst-named spring being adapted to overcome said feed-roll-springs.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a rotatable platen, of means to conduct superposed webs and a separate outer sheet to and, around the platen, an adjustable leading-edge gage for said Webs, a second independent, adjustable leading-edge gage for said sheet, means between said gages and the platen for severing the webs transversely, and means for adjusting said severing means to permit the removal of the leading portion of said sheet from the severing point to permit severing the webs only.
36, In a typewriting machine, the combination with a rotatable platen, of: means to conduct superposed webs and a separate outer sheet to and around the platen, an adjustable leadingedge, gage for said webs, a second independent, adjustable leading-edge gage for said sheet, means between said gages and the platen for severing the webs transversely, means for adjusting said severing means to permit the withdrawal of the leading portion of saidsheet from the severing point to permit severing the webs only,
and means for holding the sheet against ac-.
cidental displacement.
37. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a rotatable platen, of means to conduct superposed webs and a separate outer sheet to and around the platen, feedrolls adapted to run on the under side of the-platen, an adjustable leading-edge gage for said webs, a second independent, adjustable leading-edge gage for said sheet, means between said gages and the platen for severing the webs transversely, means for adjusting said severing means to permit the withdrawal of the leading portion of said sheet from the severing point to permit severing the webs only, and means for releasing said feed-rolls to permit the removal of the sheet, said feed-rolls serving when in effective position to hold said sheet against accidental displacement at the severing operation of the webs.
38. The combination with a platen, of means for supporting and guiding a web to and around the platen, additional means for supporting and guiding said web to and around the platen, means for carrying carbon sheets for the web, a gage to which the web may be advanced, means for swinging the platen to a position to permit the retraction of the carbons, and means for moving said additional supporting means to effective position when the platen is in a carbon-retracting position.
39. The combination with a platen, of means for supporting and guiding a web to and around the platen, additional web-supporting means normally in ineffective position when the platen is in typing position, means for carryin carbon sheets for said web, a gage to wh1ch said web may be advanced, means for swinging the platen to a position to permit the retraction of said can bone and to permit the gaging of the web, and means for automatically moving said additional supporting means to effective position when the platen is in gaging position.
40. The combination with a platen, of means for supporting and guiding a web to and around the platen, a paper-shelf at the introductory side of the platen, additional web-supporting means normally in ineffective position when the platen is in typing position, means for carrying carbon sheets for the web, a gage to which the web may be advanced, means for swinging the platen .to a position to permit the retraction of the carbons and to permit the gaging of the web, means for automatically moving said additional supporting means to effective position when the platen is in gaging position, and. a F
receptacle for said additional supporting means when in ineffective position to permit holding said additional supporting means below the surface of said paper-shelf.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a rotatable platen, of means for supporting webs and introducing them at one side of the machine, a table at the introductory side of the platen for supporting a separate sheet, means for introducing said sheet at a side of the machine other than the introductory side for the webs, a flare at the introductory side of the table for guiding said sheet onto said table, means for guiding said webs in superposed relation and conducting them to and around the platen, and means for guiding and conducting said separate sheet to and around said platen.
42.. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen frame including a platen and a paper table forming part of the frame, of means for lifting said platen relatively to said table, and a frame lying upon said table adapted to rise with the lifting platen to support a work-sheet.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen frame including a platen a nda paper table forming part of the frame, of means for lifting said platen relatively to said table, a frame lying upon said table adapted to rise with the lifting platen to support a work-sheet, an adjustable side gage on said last-named frame, to guide the work-sheet, and a separate side gage to guide another work-sheet around the platen.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen and a platen frame, of a paper table, a paper-guide-frame having members adapted to lie within hollows in said paper table, devices for permitting the platen to be shifted relatively to the paper table, and means for causing said guide-frame carry up a work-sheet with it.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen and a platen frame, of a paper table, a paper-guide-frame having members adapted to lie within hollows in said paper table, devices for permitting the platen to be shifted relatively to the paper table, means for causing said guideframe to rise with the platen and carry up a work-sheet with it, and an adjustable edge gage for the work-sheet adapted to be fastened to said guide-frame, and lying above the surface of the table.
46. In a typewriting machine,the combination with a platen and a platen frame, of a paper table, a paper-guide-frame having members adapted ,to lie within hollows in said paper table, devices for permitting the platen to be shifted relatively to the to rise with the platen and 7 paper table, means for causing said guideframe to rise with the platen and carry up a work-sheet with it, transverse and longitudinal rods forming part of the guideframe and lying within the hollows, an adjustable edge gage for the work-sheet slidable on the transverse rods and lying above the table, and a spring adapted to swing the guide-frame upwardly to follow the platen when the platen rises.
47. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen and a platen frame, of a paper table, a rod above said paper table, over which a work-sheet may be passed around the platen, a skeleton frame lying within hollows in said paper table, adapted to underlie said work-sheet and another work-sheet, means to enable the platen to be lifted, arms whereby said skeleton frame is journaled upon said rod, and means for swinging the skeleton frame with the rising platen, to lift the work-sheets together with the platen.
48. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen and a platen frame, of a paper table forming part of said frame, a device to enable the platen to be lifted clear of the paper table to enable worksheets passed over. the paper table to extend horizontally beneath the platen, and a skeleton frame, moving to effective position at the rising of the platen, adapted to hold work-sheets horizontally when resting upon it.
49. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen and a platen frame, of a paper table forming part of said frame, a device to enable the platen to be lifted clear of the paper table to enable worksheets passed over the paper table to extend horizontally beneath the platen, a skeleton frame normally at the paper table and adapted to hold work-sheets horizontally when resting upon it, a spring for causing the skeleton frame to rise, and a stop for arresting the skeleton frame when it brings the work-sheets to horizontal position.
50. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen and a platen frame, of a paper table forming part of said frame, a device to enable the platen to be lifted clear of the paper table to enable worksheets passed over the paper table to extend horizontally beneath the platen, a skeleton frame adapted to hold work-sheets horizontally when resting upon it, and a piece forming a side gage and adjustable upon said frame.
51. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen frame and a revoluble platen, of devices to enable the platen to be shifted relatively to the frame, a paper table adapted to guide sheets around mamas the platen, and a secondary sheebsupporting device adapted to rise to support Worksheets when the platen is lifted.
52. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen frame and a revoluble platen, of devices to enable the platen to be shifted relatively to the frame, a paper table adapted to guide Work-sheet around the platen, a secondary sheet-supporting device adapted to rise to support Work-sheets when 10 able edge gage for the Work-sheets, forming part of said secondary device.
