of Essex and Franklin, respectively, State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Pencil-Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

Our invention has for its object an improved holder or clip which is designed to be used in connection with lead pencils or the like and to be used as a holder and sharpener for the same. The device preferably consists of a spring-metal split band and of a pocket engaging portion secured at one end to the band and provided at the free end with a lead sharpening device.

The pocket engaging clip is so arranged and combined with the lead sharpening device that it operates both as a means for holding the pencil in the pocket 'of-theuser, and as a means for sharpening the pencil and for guiding it when being sharpened so that the pencil lead or other like material may be quickly and readily brought to the desired 301K113.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view of a paper rolled pencil provided with a device embodying our invention.

Having reference to the drawings there is shown a pencil 11 of the paper rolled type to which is secured a clip or holder 12 embodying our invention. The holder 12 consists preferably of a split band of spring metal 13, which is adapted to surround the pencil as'shown in Fig. 1, and is provided at one of its split ends with an inturned portion 14, which extends toward the center of the band 13 and is sharpened at its inner edge 15. The band, hereinabove described, is particularly adapted to be used on paper rolled pencils, for the knife edge 15 may be employed to sever a paper strip of the pencil to enable the pencil to 'be'sharpened. An-

The shank then curves outwardly and at its lower end is provided with a cone shaped lea-d sharpening device 19. The shank is "preferably of spring metal, being formed as described so that it will readily engage the outer edge of the pocket of the user when the pencil "is inserted into the pocket The lead sharpener 19 is preferably integral with the shank 18 and consists of a strip of metal 21 which is attached to one side of the lower end of the shank and is formed in a coneshaped spiral as shown. The inner portion 22 of the spiral is so ar ranged that the opening at its upper end is somewhat greater than the diameter of the lead of a pencil, while that at its lower end is relatively small, preferably of the size shown. The inner end 23 of the spiral metal strip 21 is sharpened to form a knife edge which is adapted to engage with and sharpen the lead of a pencil inserted within the spiral portion 22 in a manner hereinafter to be described.

In order that the lead of the pencil may be inserted within the sharpener 19 and readily and quickly sharpened to the desired point, the shank 18 of the pocket engaging portion 17 is so arranged and constructed that it acts as a guide for the pencil while the lead is being sharpened. It will be noted from the above, that when the device is being used as a holder, the sharpener 19 takes the place ofa button or ball on the end of the pocket engaging portion and aids materially in guiding the pocket engaging portion over the outer edge of the pocket; and when the holder is being used as a sharpener the shank of the pocket engaging portion serves as a guide for the pencil as it is being sharp- The band 13 of the holder forms not only a means for attaching it to the pencil but also serves as a handle for holding the clip when it is being used as a pencil sharpening device. The device thus aflords a convenient means for holding a pencil in the pocket of the user and for sharpening the pencil when desired.

What weclaim is:

1. The improved pencil attachment comprising a band for attachment to a pencil, a spring shank portion connected with the band and adapted to extend along side of the pencil whereby the'device may cooperate with a pencil held therein for attachment to a pocket, and a pencil sharpener on the opposite end of the shank from that to which the band is attached, the shank por- "tion being concave transversely to form a for attachment to a pencil, a spring shank connected with the band which exportion tends along side of the pencil and cooperates therewith for attachment to a pocket, the shank being transversely curved in such manner as to present a substantially concave side toward the pencil, and a pencil sharpener on the opposite end of-the shank from that to which the band is attached, said sharpener consisting of a cone-shaped spiral sharpened at its inner edge, the axis of the cone being substantially parallel with the axis of the band, the concave face of the shank engaging the pencil when the point of the pencil is inserted in the sharpener.

3. A pencil attachment comprising a band "for attachment to a pencil, a spring shank portion connected with the bandwhich extends along side of the pencil and cooperates therewith for attachment to a pocket, the shank being transversely curved in such manner as to provide a substantially concave face toward the pencil, and apencil sharpener on the opposite end of the shank from that to which the band is attached, said sharpener consisting of acone-shaped spiral sharpened at its inner edge, the axis of the cone being substantially parallel with the axis of the band,theside of the cone which is adjacent the pencil flaring away from the side of the pencil.
