BOBBIN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2, llfllllfl.
Application filed April 10, 1917. Serial No. 161,057.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM PICKARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Laporte, in the county of Laporte and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bobbins, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in bobbins and relates particularly to bobbins which are adapted to be used in connection with crocheting cotton.
Ordinarily crocheting cotton is sold in balls and not wound around spools as is the case in threads of various kinds. For this reason a ball of crocheting cotton cannot be put upon an ordinary spindle for conveniently unwinding cotton from the ball.
My invention has for its object to pro duce a bobbin for conveniently holding balls of crocheting cotton or kindred thread which is simple and durable and allows the cotton to be unwound therefrom in a convenient manner.
With this and other objects which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrange ment of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a bobbin embodying my invention,
Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same.
Like characters of reference indicate like parts in the various views.
In the drawings 1 designates a base. The base has a flat bottom and on the top surface thereof a circular recess 2 is formed. A pin 3 is mounted on the base within the recess and concentric thereto, and extends upwardly therefrom. A bobbin 4: is provided which comprises a conical flange 5 and a spindle 6 extending upwardly from the small end of the conical flange and in axial alinement thereto. The bobbin is provided with a bore 7 adapted to engage the pin 3 upon which the bobbin rotates. When the bobbin is mounted upon the pin 3 the lower edge of the flange 5 projects into the recess 2 to prevent the unwinding thread of the ball from accidentally getting underneath the flange and catching between the flange and the base. A retaining member 8 is provided which is conical in shape and has a recess 9 therein, disposed in axial alinement with the conical surface, and adapted to fit over the free end of the spindle.
In the use of the device a ball of cotton 10 of the character described is placed over the spindle 6 and pushed downward thereon until its undersurface engages the flange 5. The retaining member 8 is then engaged with the spindle 6 and pushed downwardly thereon until its conical surface engages the upper end of the ball of cotton. The cotton is then unwound from the ball the bobbin rotating upon the spindle 3 in the process thereof.
It will be noted that by the above described construction a bobbin is provided which is adapted to be engaged by balls of cotton or twine which are not wound upon a spool, and that the construction of the flange 5 and of the retaining member 8 center the ball of cotton upon the spindle and firmly hold it there.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim 1. A device for holding a ball of cotton comprising in combination, a base having a pin mounted thereon, a circular recess formed in said base concentric with said pin, a bobbin comprising a spindle having a flange atits lower end about which the ball of cotton is disposed the latter resting on said flange, said bobbin adapted to project into said recess, a hole formed in the flange end of said bobbin adapted to engage the pin in the base, and a retaining member adapted to engage the free end of said spindle of the bobbin and partly disposed in said ball of cotton.
2. A device for holding a ball of cotton comprising in combination a base having a pin mounted thereon, a circular recess formed in said base concentric with said pin, a bobbin comprising a conical flange terminating in a spindle at its small end about which the ball of cotton is disposed, the latter resting on said flange, the said flange being adapted to project into said recess, a hole formed on the flange end of said bobbin adapted to engage the pin in the base, and a conical retaining member having a recess at its small end adapted to engage the free end of said spindle and partly disposed in said ball of cotton.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
WILLIAM PIOKARD.
